Start tomorrow. Not too many great first round games but one that I might go to is Sachse vs Allen on Tuesday. A good detailed evaluation on all classifications in DMNews today. An excerpt below on 6A from the Metroplex......

"It will take an amazing playoff run just to reach the state tournament out of Class 6A Region I. The region includes eight of the top 14 teams in the state rankings, with No. 1 Duncanville, No. 2 DeSoto, No. 4 Arlington Martin, No. 5 South Grand Prairie, No. 8 Keller, No. 9 Denton Guyer, No. 12 Hurst L.D. Bell and No. 14 Cedar Hill.

The region also includes the top three recruits in the state in the Class of 2020 — Baylor signees Sarah Andrews and Hannah Gusters of Irving MacArthur and North Carolina signee Deja Kelly of Duncanville. The 6-4 Gusters, a McDonald’s All-American, ranks sixth in the Dallas area in scoring (22.1 points per game) and fourth in rebounds (10.3 per game)."

Some outstanding second round games are probable. The best third round game would be Duncanville vs DeSoto. DeSoto lost Smith who is number one sophomore player in state for the year but is still salty.

Results from around the state would be appreciated. Especially for teams with Horns commits.

Thanks for posting about this. I haven't watched hardly any HS ball this season but would love to catch some playoff games. That DeSoto-Duncanville game in the 3rd round should be FIRE.

Basketball playoffs just like the football playoffs in the state of Texas are too long and put tons of wear and tear on the athletes bodies.

Elyssa Coleman's Atascocita team (TABC ranked #10 in state) finished 2nd in their district behind Summer Creek and will play Beaumont West Brook on Tuesday.

Precious Johnson's Baytown Sterling team did not make the playoffs.

Someone posted Westlake's first round matchup above. Westlake and Lake Travis both finished 15-1 in district, but I'm guessing LT won the coin flip to be designated the 1st place team. This is significant because it means Westlake plays a fairly tough 3rd place team in Smithson Valley, while LT plays a weak 4th place team in Schertz Clemens.

I find it amazing that Irving MacArthur doesn't have a better team considering they have both Gusters and Andrews. Yes they won their district, but they're not even state-ranked and they've been beaten soundly by several teams in non-district. Maybe one or both of their stars were injured?

You guessed right. Gusters was ineligible to play until November or December? Due to UIL ruling of transfer for athletic reasons. Andrews hurt her ankle or knee in December or ? and was out until late January. So they didnt get to play together much. It’s possible they jell during the playoffs.....or not. They will be a tough handle for anyone they play.

There were not any significant upsets Monday night in DFW. Duncanville was only up like 7 with 4 minutes to play but ran away late. Think their opponent was Arlington Martin. I didn’t pay a lot attention this morning as all were pretty routine wins. Another group of first round games tonight.

Looked up the brackets online, and I thought Duncanville was playing Mansfield Summit in the 1st round. Arlington Martin should be on a collision course with Hurst Bell in the 3rd round.

Also, did Keller lose to Lewisville? If so, that's surely considered a significant upset. Keller was ranked #9 in the state, Lewisville unranked.

You are correct. It was Mansfield Summit. And yes.....Lewisville won 53-51 and will play Duncanville next. Lewisville is 22-11. Arlington Martin plays Euless Trinity tonight. LD Bell and Myra Gordon won by 29 over Arlington Bowie. The Colony and Jewel Spears won by 4 over Grapevine. South Grand Prairie over Dallas Skyline by 6.

Austin Westlake got a good test against Smithson Valley today. The game was very tight for most of the 1st half and part of the 3rd quarter, but then Westlake really blew the game wide open with a full court press that forced some turnovers and led to transition buckets. Shay Holle was really quiet in the 1st half but scored a lot in the second half, especially on timely cuts from the wing where her teammates found her for layups.

Westlake (ranked #10 in state) will take on San Antonio Clark (#23) in round 2.

Meanwhile, Austin Lake Travis (#21) was upset by Schertz Clemens, the 4th-place team from District 26-5A.

Not a lot of upsets or close games in DFW. Sachse beat Allen by 12 but not an upset. Irving McArthur by 24 over Keller Timber Creek with Gusters 18 and Andrews 9. DeSoto by 79 over Richardson Pearce. Denton Guyer by 25 over Hebron. Cedar Hill by 9 over Richardson. Bishop Lynch over Ursuline by 18 with Paige Bradley getting 14. Next round there will be some really good games. Bishop Lynch vs Plano Prestonwood is a marquee game for large private schools.

Btw I read in the American-Statesman today that Shay Holle finished the game with 19 points, all of them in the 2nd half.

As far as I can figure, the following state-ranked 6A teams lost in the 1st round:

    #9 Keller lost to Lewisville
#15 Cypress Ranch lost to Austin Vandegrift
#21 Austin Lake Travis lost to Schertz Clemens

    Interesting 2nd-round games:

    6A:
#8 Denton Guyer vs. #13 Cedar Hill
#7 South Grand Prairie vs. Irving MacArthur
#10 Austin Westlake vs. #23 San Antonio Clark
#20 San Antonio Reagan vs. #24 Cibolo Steele

    5A:
#5 Mansfield Timberview vs. #14 Denton Braswell
#7 Fort Bend Hightower vs. #11 Barbers Hill

Friday night scores coming in. Big one so far is South Grand Prairie over Irving McArthur. Not an upset but nice to see Gusters and Andrews losing.......as they might not experience that much next year in Waco. Have no details. Just score from UIL brackets.

I was at this game. It was insane. Wild momentum swings. SGP shot lights out in the first half and led by double digits at one point. MacArthur switched to zone in the second half and stormed back with hot shooting of their own, and led by as much as about 10 in the fourth quarter. Then SGP rallied again and took the lead in the last couple minutes.

MacArthur had to start fouling, and unfortunately for them it was Gusters who committed 4 fouls in a row and fouled out with about 30 seconds left (poor management by the coach, who seemed more interested in acting like a teenager than actually coaching).

SGP missed the front end of a 1 and 1 to keep the lead at 3, and then Andrews hit a 3 from the wing with maybe 10 seconds left to tie the game. After a timeout, SGP ran an amazing play from out of bounds to take advantage of Gusters’ absence. Their player (I think the same one who missed the critical free throw?) caught a pass on the weak side, took a dribble and sank an 8 footer just as time expired.

The gym was packed and the place went nuts.

SGP has a guard named Jackson (jersey number 3) who must’ve hit at least eight 3’s. She hit two from deep to give her team the lead for good in the final couple minutes. She was fantastic and not just for her shooting. Very poised and high BB IQ. The team got great play from others, including the one who hit the game winner, but Jackson was the MVP.

Gotta love social media. This clip shows the game-tying 3 by Andrews and then the game-winner by SGP at the buzzer. (Looks like it was maybe a 12 to 15-footer.)

Duncanville vs DeSoto Tuesday night at Wilkerson-Greines arena in Ft Worth. Think it is 7 pm. Wish it was closer to my house. Both these teams are south dallas and they play in Ft Worth? I may still go. Don't get to see Number 1 vs Number 2 that often.

They probably both want to gain the advantage of familiarity with the arena where the regional semis and final will be played, for whichever one advances.

Duncanville beat DeSoto 47-43 tonight. DeSoto led 43-40 with two minutes to play. Kelly made 7 of 8 free throws late. DeSoto was 1-7 free throws in last quarter. Free throws ARE important. Remind me why Kelly decommited.

I saw this game. Just amazed at how DeSoto had no composure in the last few minutes of the game. Even before they lost their lead, their body language and energy was just negative. And then that epic collapse from the free throw line. I remember they missed the front end of a 1-and-1, and then two different players went 0 for 2.
