    Reported by AAS:

Mike Yurcich gets a 3 year deal at $1.7 million per year. Chris Ash has a two year deal worth $800,000. Jay Boulware (special teams / tight ends) gets a three year deal at $700,000 per year and Coleman Hutzler (linebackers) gets a two year deal at $600,000 per. Real money.

Any performance incentives to get to those numbers?

Probably not. That would just be mean to hold people accountable for their compensation.

What about stability? When coaches are out recruiting, isn't one of the considerations for the recruit whether this guy will be around next year?

One of the greatest backs in our program history came down to two schools - Texas and the one his girlfriend attended, where the school where OA Phillips was an assistant. "Don't choose a school because of a coach because chances are he will leave before you do".

True to his word, Phillips was gone at the end of the kid's second season, but the kid was a starter at Texas for three years and an All American.

The way we throw money around is nauseating. If it brings us a CFP appearance after this season and a NC within three years, fine. But the recent history of this university in the big three sports suggests otherwise.

Better than being gone next year and have another roll over of the staff.

That would mean the complete staff including the head coach. Herman got his ONE do over; there won't be a second.

What schools offer lower guarantees with incentives?

If this is the marketplace then this is the marketplace.

The trick is choosing or offering the "Right or Winning" coaches at these levels.

You can't expect an executive (CDC) to micromanage every head coach's decisions.

He does, however, need to micromanage his own decision about each head coach.

The school and big cigars have the money and the coaches know it. So what do you do about it other than complain?

I get the sentiment, but does that mean you think we'd do better if we paid our coaches less?

I hope we don't have any interpersonal issues relating to paying Ash less than half of what we're paying Yurich for a position of equal authority, importance, and responsibility.

DC Chris Ash has about $8M owed by Rutgers that a part will get offset so $800k is a bargain in todays times.

Maybe after the BOR gets done we can see the details.

This probably won’t be a very popular opinion — and I know that the subject has been covered ad nauseam — but based on what we saw last year, I have to wonder if we could have done any worse? And don’t forget that the win against Kansas required a last second FG, and the struggling win against OSU came partially as a result of uncharacteristically poor in-game decisions by Gundy.

What I am saying is that our 7-5 regular season record of last year was probably worse than it looks on paper.

Yes, the season could have ended worse. Could have been a break even regular season of 6-6 or a 5-7. The 7-5 finish was a mediocre end to the regular season, but the way the team responded by crushing Utah probably played a bigger role in TH’s being retained and keeping his head off the chopping block. I believe Orlando and some others being axed prior to the bowl game was a major factor. Watching that game, particularly the D, was almost like the difference between night and day. If those terminations had not happened, that game could have been a disaster resulting in the whole coaching crew being sent packing.

With the new hires coming on board, I am optimistic about 2020, but I’m not going to predict a CFP appearance nor a conference championship. The LSU and OU game results should be good indicators of how our season will pan out.

    Joe,

Don't forget that Naivar ran the defense against Utah. This is the same coach who helped get Herman multiple jobs early in his career; one of the coaches Herman fired after the bowl and after the coach may have saved Herman's ***.

If Craig "took one for the Gipper", I'm ok with that. If Herman helped Craig get a gig at USC, I'm ok with that. If, like Switzer, Herman promised to use his power to elevate Craig's career down the road, I'm ok with that.

If none of the above is ever discovered to be true, Dion will ban me from this board in thirty seconds, and CDC will block my emails and phone calls.

I was reading an article about this and I must say they pointed out a very important aspect. All our new hires come with considerably more experience than the guys they replaced.

Chris Ash comes to Texas as a former DC at Ohio State and Wisconsin, not to mention a former Head coach at Rutgers. He is only making 800K because he is getting paid 5.7 million from Rutgers.

Mike Yarich comes to Texas as a very successful OC running the power spread at Oklahoma State.

Jay Boulware comes to Texas as a very successful TE coach from Oklahoma.

Andre Colemen, Colemen Hutzler, and Mark Hagan are all guys with a lot of P5 Coaching experience.

The one guy who is coming in as an unknown is Jay Volai who was hand picked by Chris Ash and has been both a player and coach under Ash.

Only time is going to tell if we overpaid for these coaches. But I do like that they all come in with considerable skins on the wall from other places. With of course the exception of JV who is getting rave reviews from a lot of people.

Herman didn't fire Naivar, his contract ran out and he was offered a position in another area. Naivar chose to look at other options and he found the USC gig. The new Texas DC is also the safety coach, Naivar's services were not needed. Did you take this much exception when Mack Brown fired his long time friend Greg Davis? Especially after Davis took Texas to two National Championship Games?

    Bill,

I asked before if Herman and CDC allowed Naivar a position in administration. I would have been happy with that.

Greg Davis is not a good example since that was the third time Mack was told "he goes or you go". I've known Greg since he was in Junior High in Groves. When DKR took HIS committee to Atlanta, I had two "no" votes. I had to be in San Antonio that day, but one of my friends called me on my cell to tell me he thought "this might be the guy" and he was voting for the offer. My only comment was "Don't let him bring Greg Davis",

IIRC, USC didn't have a good D this past season. They should see some fast improvement with Naivar onboard.

Do you have any good Rooster stories? I lived in Hyde Park during school and would see Rooster often near the store.

Rooster Cogburn or Rooster Andrews? I met and talked to Rooster Andrews at football banquets 1998-2002 or so. Great guy! He came to Texas as a football manager but played as a kicker since he could drop kick extra points and FGs. He faked the FG a couple of times and threw passes to Bobby Layne. He also played on the baseball team. I used to go to his store a lot when in Austin. But, it closed up after his passing. May have moved, but I think it is gone.

Moon dog - Next year we will have more talent and more experience on the field. Plus I cannot see how we would have worse coaching. A 10 win season should be automatic

    Yea, maybe.
Already have some built in excuses for next year.
New coaches. New systems. See how injuries and attrition goes.
    But I agree.
9 wins in season with bowl win to bring it to 10.
    Should be the bar.

This is kind of how I felt about prognostications for college football back in Mack's era. We had x wins last year, we should improve, therefore we should have x+2 wins next year.

I just don't think it's that simple with Texas since 2010. When we fell apart and tried everything to regain prominence, it showed a lot of systemic flaws with Texas' approach to recruiting, coaching, etc. And I don't think those problems are fixed yet. If anything, I think we had more question marks in 2019 than we have in recent years, when it was easier to predict losses under Chuck Strong. We went 8-5, but I'd argue that we could have easily gone 4-8, watching what I watched against OK State, KU, and KSU. So theoretically, we could "improve" in things like scheme, tackling, and the run game, and still go 8-4 again with more resounding wins against the likes of KU.

I'd friggin love to go 11-1, but history says we won't.

When your HC is on the hot seat, you are screwed with contract negotiations when you retool your coaching staff. You gotta give them 2 or 3 year guaranteed deals for more money than normal in order to get them to leave their jobs, or take your gig over some other one. If Herman had retooled the year before we would have been in the catbird seat with hiring. Could have gotten them without 3 year deals and for less money. Coaches are learning that the money spends the same and a little less money without the pressures of a Texas, etc isn't a bad life.
