Next man/woman up ! or should I say OUT !.....

Best post on this thread to date. That’s why I hardly get on here. I swear KA must have fired a couple of these posters. But Texas fans have always had a sense of entitlement without really proving much in any of the major sports.....and I say that as a Texas fan myself.

 

I can't speak for other posters, but I don't deny any of the success Karen had. She earned what success she achieved and she deserves credit for that. She made me a believer in year 2 when she matched Gail's best postseason result AND was already raking in the blue-chip recruits. All signs pointed up as UT progressed further and further in the NCAAT, finally topping out in an Elite 8 where UT gave a juggernaut 2016 UConn team its toughest game of the tournament.

But that's the rub -- she clearly topped out. Aside from reaching the Elite 8 in 2016, her other high-water moments (in terms of on-court performance) were beating Baylor in Waco in 2017 and giving UConn a decent scare in the early 2018 game at home.

So I don't deny that she did have success, and I commend her for it. As I say, I was a believer in Aston, and even defended her from detractors and naysayers for what seemed like a long time. The first time I really thought "Austin, we have a problem" was in the fiasco of a game early in the 2017-18 season at Knoxville, where Karen made Holly Warlick look like a competent coach by comparison. That was Brooke and Ariel's senior year, and UT was preseason ranked #2, but it was painfully evident in that game that they were over-ranked and horribly coached. They couldn't even run a simple in-bounds play. It was one of the ugliest games from start to finish that I've ever seen -- and I've watched a lot of basketball.

So back to your point. I'm comfortable acknowledging what success she did have while also recognizing the need to move on from her. But where are we now and where are we going? It's can't be about what she achieved three to six years ago. In terms of competitiveness the program is now roughly where Goestenkors had it -- a 1st round or, at best, 2nd round NCAA exit, and not trending in a positive direction. Do we have reason to believe that this would be just a momentary dip as she re-tools the team? Do we see her getting back us to an Elite 8 or contending for a Final Four in the next several years? I don't see any evidence to support that hope.

Hate? Good lord, how do you hate someone you don’t even know? I don’t hate Karen and I doubt anyone on here does.

What we hate is losing games. We hate watching players not live up to their perceived potential. We hate a stagnant offense. We hate a strategy that doesn’t change from game to game. We hate not having a conference championship since 2004 and a conference tournament championship since 2003. We hate watching an entire highly-ranked recruiting class walk away. We hate winning just one game to Baylor in the last ten years. We hate overall B12 losing records to Baylor and ISU. We hate not seeing a Final Four appearance in 16 years. We hate not living in at least the Top 25 much less Top 10. We hate that the current coach hasn’t been able to change any of that. We hate a lot of things but I, for one, don’t hate Karen.

Even when a few of us showed you way back in black and white her weaknesses and warned you that it was only going to get worse, you vehemently defended her. THEN, when things actually did continue in the downward spiral WE warned you about, you started to criticize her yourself. Now you're back to being her best friend, defending her and Mooooooo, and accusing those who disagree with you of "hate". How utterly ridiculous and petty. Every single thing that we told you regarding recruiting, loss of players, downward spiral, has come to fruition, and for that we "hate her"??? I hate no one. At least we've been consistent in our opinions for the most part and aren't "afraid" to voice them. On the other hand, you and a few others, like busy little bees, dizzy from flying recklessly into each other, try desperately to decide from day to day which side of the fence you are on. Forgive me if I'm underwhelmed by your latest routine....

 

I am neither KA's greatest defender nor certainly her greatest critic. Of course, I've bitched about various aspects of her coaching for years. At the same time, I recognize that she has brought us up from a very low place, and we can still have games now and then that look pretty darned well coached. The biggest problem has been consistency. I just think life comes mostly in shades of gray. I don't mean to suggest that anyone on here has a hatred for Karen as a person, but reading through the board and the way things are sometimes written, it can be hard to keep that in mind. My only real point was that this board has changed. I don't enjoy vitriol and fighting, and there is far more of it than there used to be. I suspect there are others like me, since some major names from the past have vanished from this board. I'll stick in, because I enjoy expressing myself, and don't care if I trigger someone's wrath or am put down by the brilliant minds on here.

 

There's a difference between (constructive) criticism and hateful/insulting comments towards our coaches. Some posters just don't know the difference; they are so angry that we are NOT winning at a high level, and they believe that lashing out at Karen here on this anonymous message board is productive. And, there is a difference between fans being "angry" versus being "disappointed".

Perhaps I'll go back and find examples of those type of posts and who posted them, and list them here for all to see. Then, folks can decide what is "hateful", and what is simple criticism.

While I'm not surprised at ANYTHING you ever say, you actually have the audacity to accuse others of "hateful/insulting" comments when you openly demeaned and mocked Mulkey for having her grandchild on the stage with her after winning the National Championship, even though she had just lost her first grandchild a year or so earlier??? First, get your facts straight (which has never been your strong suit on this board). It was not after the national championship game, it was during the ESPN tourney selection show. So, quit LYING.

Since you enjoy bringing it up any chance you get, and continue to be so ANGRY about it, I'll say it again. IN MY OPINION, Mulkey used her infant grandchild on LIVE television last March to soften her image; she did not have a good image since she earlier advised Baylor fans to "punch 'em in the face" if anyone brought up the rape problems; her fake apology and crocodile tears a few days later didn't snow anybody. There's not one single reason to put that infant in that situation. Like it or not, that's my opinion. Deal with it like an adult, instead of crying BLOODY MURDER just because you shook Mulkey's hand once or twice. My opinion on that specific situation has nothing to do with the loss of a prior grandchild; you have spun that in your head just to be ANGRY. Shocker.

Mulkey is who she is, and has done so many unethical things and said so many inappropriate comments. Strange that you LOVE her so much, bordering on OBSESSIVE; it's actually kind of creepy. I love that it upsets you so much on a TEXAS LONGHORN message board when I discuss Mulkey's lack of ethics. I won't stop; I will continue to say more things about her as I see fit. Big 12 Tournament was cancelled a few minutes ago and at this rate I am just speculating the NCAA will follow. ESPN commentators are pretty much sealing the deal with their opinions. Sad situation.

Agree. What infuriates me is the thought that Karen Aston could possibly be the coach at THE university of Texas beyond this ridiculous season. Corona may be a serious health threat but if it saved ANYbody's job, that's utter bullshyt.

Looks like another 3-5 years more of KA basketball coming up. Corona may have saved KA. I’m sorry for our players, fan base, and University. We deserve better, much better. Just astounded by how mediocrity gets rewarded here at Texas. we’ll never compete for any championship in WBB with this regime whose better days are years back now.

 

If anything, the cancellation of the rest of the season should solidify her exit. IMO only a highly unlikely miracle run would've even give her a fraction of a chance. Looking at the last bracketology, we were seeded for a first round exit.

 

I'm hopeful that an early end to the season means an earlier departure for KA!

 

Welp, It looks like some on here are going to be whinnying for years to come in wbb and mbb because I don't see Karen or Shaka not being the coaches next year. A lot of wishful thinking.

 

Depressing. KA fans will be ecstatic.
