I was thinking today that somehow this forum has changed. Change is good and welcome. However, it seems that I don't know where a lot of the posters comments are coming from. I wished I knew your background, motives and other that show up in posts. I then realized that we had a thread in the past that allowed some personalization of our comments. That thread was started by me on March 19, 2017 so tomorrow is the 3 year anniversary of that. Several thought it was a good idea then and all comments were revealing and helpful and fun. LOTS of small town natives! I reread the postings to see if I could figure out who you are or remind me and why some of the postings are made. Admittedly, an ulterior motive was to try and figure out how and why many of the threads now turn ugly. In my naivety, I figured that all of us were friends and supporters of Texas Women's BB. It appears that some are not really forum friends.....or perhaps the ability to post anonymously gives that impression. In reviewing that thread, some posters are still around and it helped me to understand. Unfortunately, some of my favorite posters from that thread no longer are seen on this site. Some chose not to comment back then which leaves me to guessing. Not good as I rarely guess correctly...…..as my Texas Hold Em results confirm. I "think" that old post is still reviewable by all. However, it may just be good to start over with a Thread 2. I have noticed there are fortunately several new posters on the board that don't know some of the history of this site and/or posters. Perhaps any information in a new thread would help them understand. And help us know the new posters. If there is interest in this thread 2, let's get it started. My next post will give a very short reason I post. For the LONG version, my old post gives more. No reason to bore folks with that again.

Avid fan since I was a kid... Jackie Swaim, Nell Fortner, Leta Whaley, Sheryl Hauglum, Joy Williams, Terry Mackey, Cheryl Hartman were some of the names I remember the most from when I started following.

We moved to Austin in 1984 and were women's basketball season ticketholders from then until we moved to Kentucky six years ago. Still follow the team (thanks LHN!), get to see Chas Patterson play here. No basketball credentials, just a fan of the game.

I found this site because of a young lady I knew and watched play committed to Texas. I follow but stopped commenting because too many negative comments as well as fighting. I played in college then coached as an assistant for women’s for a low D1 school. I have since retired but have many friends still coaching. I am now assisting an old friend on the high school level to keep myself busy. My son played DII and daughter DIII. I live in New Jersey near Philadelphia. Was never a huge fan of the team mainly because you can’t see games here but always had respect for the program

Grew up in Lubbock rooting for the Red Raiders. Lived on the east coast and used to meet my sister for away games. Moved to Austin in 2003 and immediately got season tickets. I played basketball back when it was a half court game. Always loved it -don’t post much because i am not very knowledgable. Love the game and i used to really enjoy following this forum. Then it became a s**t show for a few people which is pretty boring.

UT undergraduate degree in Business Administration/Marketing. Grew up in OK playing high school basketball and baseball (only sports we had so played baseball in both fall and spring). Our high school girls played half court, 6-on-6 back then. Continued to go to the UT women after graduation until we moved to Portland, OR, in 2000. My Dad’s first time to see a 5-on-5 womens’ game was Texas with Conradt and Tennessee with Summit one Thanksgiving weekend in Austin.

:bevo:Graduate of UT Austin. Grew up in Austin when schools did not have girls' sports and went to UIL tournaments with my family. Parents were from small towns and played sports on outdoor dirt courts and sandlots. Too old to benefit from Title IX, but played rec league tennis and softball. Always attended and followed WBB (and all UT sports), and attended ACC and SEC WBB games when I lived in other states. I don't know anyone on this board that I know of, and I skip the unhelpful personal sniping. I joined in 2018-19 when it became painfully obvious that the team had a problem - chemistry, focus, motivation or whatever. I wanted to share comments, opinions, observations and frustrations with other fans. I've concluded ...There are only a few coaches who can motivate teams to play at their maximum physical and mental levels over a sustained period of time. I think coaching is especially difficult now, when players have so many options - online technologies, academic fields that once discouraged women - sports are not the only way to spend free time, no longer a family or community focus. But I want all UT sports to be in the top 10 each year; athletic success makes me happy and adds value to everyone's UT degree. Stay safe, all.

In these first few responses, I am giddy to know more about ya'll. It is obvious that there are those that care and have things to say and that I would like to hear more about regarding WBB and ALL UT sports. Remember, you don't have to be a UT grad or attendee to post of lurk. Just love UT and want it to do well and for you to stay informed. Thanks for posting.

UT grad as a Fine Arts Major, early 80s. Had attended a few women’s half-court games in high school to root for a couple of friends. Then sadly forgot about this when I arrived in Austin, during the building years of the program. A friend coaxed me into attending a game in the fall of ‘87, and with that one game, I was hooked, attended all remaining games for the season, and became a season ticket holder the next year, which I remain today, though I now live in New Mexico—family uses my tickets in my absence. Though I missed the national championship, I thankfully witnessed some amazing games with terrific players. As long as I’ve been an attendee, I make no claim to great basketball knowledge, just a genuine fan that’s looking forward to the programs return to elite status. I’ve learned a great deal from several of you, and I thank you for that. Look forward to learning more. Special shoutout to Oakman and the information you provide on the forum. Don’t blame you for not being around through the fray that seems to accompany the WBB threads, but glad to see you’re still willing to associate here when you have the time.

Stay safe and be well. Remember, though the option may remove some context from a thread (which can be kinda amusing—like watching TV with the sound off), the “ignore” button is a beautiful thing.

P.S. Also thanks to Dionysus for shutting that sh¡t down.

I wasn't aware of women's basketball until the first NCAA tournament in 1982. On Saturday the 1981 AIAW championship will be streamed. Texas lost, but it's Longhorn history.

Actually that was the 1982 AIAW championship. There were two "national championship tournaments" that year, the inaugural NCAA WBB tournament and the swan song of the AIAW tournament.

UT Student when we won the NC. My sister competed against Clarissa Davis in HS. Moved away from Texas and followed Georgia for years. Retuned to Texas and coached one year of club ball in Dallas. Went undefeated but stopped because I enjoyed watching more than coaching (and felt I was a “mean” coach :idk:). Two nieces who played D1 for South Carolina and a nephew who played at A&M (much to my dismay) My daughter was MVP in middle school and then rebelled by switching to dance team :yikes:. Love my Horns. Retuned to Austin and got my season tickets in 2003. Befriended Jody and then Gail. Don’t know Karen but know a few former players. Love my Horns. :hookem:

Watched this game - what fun! Run and gun, neither team substituted much, and the female refs wore tennis-type skirts with knee-high sox. This stream was produced by Rutgers associates, so there's not much about Texas. A brief comment by Chris Plonsky is in the intro. (Donna Lopiano was AD then; if I recall correctly, she was initially opposed to women's athletics being governed by the NCAA.) What a great team - wish they and those who followed could have won more than 1 national championship, but we're still the first undefeated ... and that was one hell of a team! :hookem:

flash 34 --- I loved your original post asking for posters' connection to UT WBB. How do you find it? I don't see a search feature on here. Would like to read it again.

In rethinking this, I guess what should have been done is me simply resurrecting the original one instead of starting a Thread 2. I'll go find it and see if I can recall it somehow.

Not much overlap between the two threads. Probably a lot of people have stopped the board until next season. The season's abrupt end was such a downer.

Not me, covid-19 spared us the embarrassment of another first round loss. This team was very inconsistent and not deserving of a tourney bid.

    thank goodness it’s over.
