Effusive praise for and thanks to Aston from Sug, Lashann, Joyner, and Shae. Distress from Joanne Allen-Taylor. And the tweet above from Celeste.

That’s usually what happens when the head coach gets fired.

I didn't know the entire staff goes as well so take the sarcasm elsewhere. Thank you have a nice day :hookem:

From what I can piece together, these are the salaries of head coaches who I believe are financially attainable (meaning they aren't already earning north of $1 million; Coach Aston was being paid around $850k):

    - Kelly Graves, Oregon: $650k in 2019; after his first Final Four season, Oregon re-signed Kelly Graves to a six-year, $4.2 million contract. That comes out to $700k annually by my calculations.

    - Cori Close, UCLA: $475k a few years ago. Guessing she is still below $600k annually

    - Adia Barnes, Arizona: was paid a base salary of $235,000 in 2018-19, the lowest mark in the Pac-12. After the Wildcats’ run to the WNIT championship, her salary jumped to $400,000.

    - Scot Rueck, Oregon State: $3,669,216 in base salary over the five-year period of the extension. That comes out to like $733k annually

Greg Hansen: Adia Barnes is a keeper, which is why the Wildcats must make sure they keep her

A large majority, if not all of the staff will go. I wouldn’t be surprised if they kept Jamie around though. She’s a Texas-ex and by gauging social media it seems she and Celeste have a close relationship.

Who, if anyone, is retained by the new head depends on so many factors. Karen basically brought in all her friends, and continued to hire mainly former player or acquaintances. Not sure we should expect any different from the new head coach . . .

A fairly small sample size but I’d like to see Terry Nooner have a real shot at staying under a new head coach. It doesn’t happen often but I thought he did a really good job considering how late he joined the staff.

He was mentioned in that podcast I linked earlier today; those guys are really high on Nooner, and believe someone (else) is gonna luck out in landing him based on our coaching changes.

Neighbors was good at UW until he bailed for his dream job. No thanks for Texas.

My biggest knock against Mike Neighbors is he's all about offense. Run and gun, get the shot up within the first 8 seconds of the shot clock.

Agreed! I like his apparent connection to his players and I like a high scoring offense, but I also love defense -- as in changing defenses that keep the opponent guessing and forces them to read and execute. We had really good man to man defense under KA, but it was pretty much one dimensional.

Offense is what will put butts in the seats and five you the best chance to win on a given night. Arkansas will be a tough out after this upcoming season with the vest recruiting class they’ve ever had. Same with Oregon. And in today’s game, putting the ball in the hole should be priority 1. The times of winning 40-35 games is long behind us.

Tell that to Texas Tech. In order to win at a high level you better be a balanced team or you’re not going to win anything. There will be games that the ball just isn’t going in no matter how good you are offensively and you have to get stops to win.

Shay Holle's father has some respect for Jamie Carey as well, along with Celeste's father (who "liked" the tweet), and Ashley Chevalier's Mother.

I loved Jamie Carey as a player at Texas; without her, we don't make the Final Four that season. And, I can understand why the Holle, Chevalier, and Taylor families like her and have gone to bat for her out in social media; after all, they have formed relationships with her during the recruitment process, but only Celeste Taylor has played for her so far.

Regardless, Jamie's coaching resume' prior to Texas was very suspect, and lacking at the collegiate level.

Jamie Carey - Women's Basketball Coach - University of Texas Athletics

    COACHING EXPERIENCE
    SCHOOL POSITION YEARS
Legacy [Colo.] HS Head Coach 2008-10
Sand Creek [Colo.] HS Head Coach 2011-14
    Colorado Assistant Coach 2014-16
    Texas Assistant Coach 2016-18
    Texas Associate Head Coach 2018-

I don't think she's a dynamic recruiter. Thought I read on this board at some point or another that she does not enjoy the recruiting part of the job. From the time she arrived at Texas, she hasn't exactly helped us land any elite PG's. She couldn't close the deal on Colorado's Ashton Prechtel, although competing against Stanford for a recruit is an uphill battle for anyone. Overall, I think our recruiting went down after she joined the staff (but, I'm not saying she's directly responsible as I can't substantiate that). I believe most of our 2017 and 2018 recruits were already committed prior to Carey arriving at Texas (but, I'm too lazy to look that up right now).

Just because she's coached at Texas the last few seasons, that doesn't necessarily mean she has formed the necessary recruiting connectionss with high school and club coaches that warrant her being retained by our new head coach. Guess we'll find out in a few weeks.

I hope this means that all of them are staying and committed to Texas. Especially chevalier, her defense is already that of a college player. Her and celeste Taylor will be a dynamic duo:hookem:

I think if the new coach were to come and were to hire Jamie Carey I think it would be a small role. I don't think it would be as an assistant coach or anything simply because not to many head coaches will keep the same staff that were there before. Jamie Carey is a great person so I do hope she gets some type of role on the staff.

Just two years ago Coach Aston was a semi finalist for that award.

Kirk Bohls obsessing more on "scaring" Mulkey than talking about realistic coaching candidates:

Bohls: Time for Texas to make a bold statement in women's basketball | Hookem.com

This part is actually very harsh, but I guess it is accurate:

The announcement that Texas was moving on from Aston was no surprise, however bad the optics.

For all practical purposes, she was fired a year ago.

Del Conte and the Texas administration effectively made the decision to change directions a year ago when they let Aston enter what would be her final season here with but a single year left on her contract.

Such policy rarely happens in big-time sports unless the bosses have already lost confidence in the coach, and this was the case here.

Aston’s final-year agreement expires in August. In letting her contract lapse, Texas basically fired her a year ago, barring a major turnaround in the fortunes of a basketball program that had moments of big success but had faltered of late, especially in recruiting, and had fallen far distant of powerhouse Baylor. Del Conte clearly saw the lack of progress and moved on.

Assuming you mean the tech men. And aside from last year, I’m not convinced that defensive style will ever allow you to compete for championships consistently.

I'm just glad his obsession has moved to scaring her instead of luring her to Texas. IRC isn't that what he's suggested the last two coaching searches?

I thought his list was realistic for normal times. I'm just not sure what the current times mean for athletic department finances and what coaches are going to be willing to take risks during a time of great uncertainty. The only one I would scratch is Tara VanDerveer. Tara's recruiting efforts would mirror what Gail was doing at Duke - smart players walking in wanting to come there. She is doing very little of getting down in the trenches and wrestling players away from other schools. She would struggle to get a recruiting foothold. I just don't see at her age wanting to do that.

I'm also not 100% sold that you have to land a big name. Aston was more successful than Goestenkors.
