In anticipation of a coaching change and reading the "discussions" going on about future coaches, I thought about this as well. First, it's a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation. I did a search of the last 10 years coaches of the year*:
2020 - Dawn Staley [not leaving, she's sitting in the catbird's seat]
2019 - Kim Mulkey [hrrumph, not going there]
2018 - Vic Schaefer [he's got a sweet deal going there, why would he leave?]
2017 - Geno Auriemma [not leaving]
2016 - Auriemma
2015 - Courtney Banghart (Princeton) [know nothing about her]
2014 - Muffet McGraw [too old, not budging]
2013 - McGraw
2012 - Mulkey
2011 - Mulkey
2010 - Connie Yori (Nebraska) - resigned in 2016 under pressure after allegations of player mistreatment
Yes, there's the Oregon coach (white male), the Louisville coach (white male), the Arizona coach (white female), and on and on.
But what about an up and comer who can....
Vic is 59 and everyone including Aggies thought he was waiting for A&M to open up. We got the best proven coach we could get who has a history of rebuilding a program.
Sorry, not sorry.
*stuck at home, BORED
