Enjoying the draft but lots of highlights against Texas. Getting some grief from friends, but it shows the caliber of talent that the Horns faced all last season.

...and the lack of talent we've had. TCU had 2 first round picks. Even Tech had a first round pick. Let that sink in for a minute.

How many times has Texas lost to TCU in the last decade? I think it's like 6-2 TCU. Also, in those years TCU had 29 NFL draft picks; the same as Texas.

Those TCU teams were good, so I'm sure the argument could be made either way (talent for or against), but it seems odd to me that Texas can't out-compete TCU for talent in this state. :idk:

Every year a few first round picks come from non-powerhouse programs. Brooks and Gladney were both 3* recruits. I don't know this for an absolute fact, but I somewhat doubt either of those guys were even on our recruiting radar. To say Texas was "out-competed" for them is simply inaccurate. Should we have recruited them? Perhaps, but hindsight is 20/20.
Regarding the recent talent level at Texas, I agree, it's been less than stellar. When you're mediocre, it's reflected in both your record and draft results. Texas has, at best, been mediocre for the past decade. To really put this in context, compare the Texas draft results to the real contenders - LSU, Ohio State, Bama, Clemson, OU.
On the bright side, even with a lesser degree of talent, we've begun competing with those upper echelon teams, and even more encouraging, our talent level is improving.

Every Texas fan knew this was coming, nothing shocking about it if you have followed at all the last few years.
Mack got lazy, Strong was a disaster.
It takes a bit to turn around a battleship. To win this many games the last few years without the talent, or young talent gives some sort of hope.
Also looking at the LSU parade last night, and more tonight, gives optimism on how competitive our younger team was.

Mack didn't get lazy he just redirected time to the LHN. So sad!

When Mack focuses on something he's one of the best in the business as evidenced by NC's recruiting rank.

Actually Mack has admitted to being depressed after losing to Bama and swimming around in his pity pool for too long.

Eleven of the first 40 picks in the NFL Draft played Texas high school football. None of them went to Texas or aggy.

Fair enough. That's understandable, and he wasn't the only one...

This year's NFL draft is eye opening. Our coaches get blasted for losing to less talented team... then we we watch 2 TCU players get drafted in the first round and another very high in the second. So at least 3 of Horned Frog's 22 starters were DAMN GOOD.

If these (caliber of) players go to UT, the Horns would win, or complete for the MNC every year. Extremely depressing to think about this.

I looked at the number of 5 star recruits as ranked by ESPN that several programs have landed over the last 5 years, 2016 to 2020 (thus far).

While some of the numbers are fully understandable, there are a few surprises.

    Expected:
    Bama - 9, that's almost 2 per year!
    Ohio State - 7
    Clemson - 6
    LSU - 3
    Texas -1
    A$M - 1
    TCU - 0!
    Baylor - 0!

    Surprises:
    OU - 1
    Notre Dame - 0
UNC - 1, yes Mack landed the #1 DE in Desmond Evans, like I said he's still one of the best in the business when focused. UNC had several great teams on the ropes and almost won those games last year.

No doubt that landing keystone recruits will have an impact on the W/L record. My oberservation here, given the results of last CFB season and the number of NFL draft picks (who weren't 5 stars) from these programs thus far, is that some coaches are fantastic at recognizing diamonds in the rough and putting those players in the best position to help their college team win games and to ultimately ascend to the NFL. Strong coaching that optimizes the talents that each and every player brings to the table certainly leads to wins, and success breeds success because the keystones want to join a winning program, a la Bama.

Mack was a glaring example of a coach knowing it is time to move on and being too hardheaded to do so. And UT was an example of an administration that does not have any succession planning in place. Conversely, those in Norman are an example of what to do in regards to those issues. Nuff said!

Mack and the subsequent events of his departure set a very good nationally ranked program back 10+ years, leaving a black mark on both. Hopefully Texas can recover with all of the new hires. Where are the statues now?
