2021 Season

I was kinda waiting till the season was over to think too much about the 2021 season. The ending was abrupt and disappointing for all the wrong reasons. So last seasons players are GONE. Time to look forward as there are players identified that are The Team now. And now the reality sets in of you have 7 returning players and 5 incoming players. And no really good rumors or insights into any other additions(JUCO or transfers). This exercise is totally independent of the coach. All I can do is say that there are 12 spots with names on them. I didn't want to waste my time hunting for the many earlier discussions about the 2021 season. So looked at it with what I know RIGHT NOW. I think the five early season starters are: Collier(5), Ortiz (4), C Taylor(3), Benzan (2) and Joanne A-Taylor(1). I think A-Taylor will be the point guard early. Benzan might be the point guard later. Perhaps it doesn't mean much which one is the 1 and which is the 2. That is a small lineup with 4 guards. Later in the season, Coleman might move into the starting lineup to give more size. Second Team....P Johnson(5), Coleman(4), Warren(3), Palmer(2), Chevalier (1). Holle (2 or 3) will fit in somewhere. Routt's(4-5) place is TBD. That's it...12 players. Of course, the coach wont substitute by teams but it does kinda show a pecking order and position. I am going to support and cheer on all 12 players. I also realize the youth (experience is valued) and skills. In my fair and biased opinion, it will be a fun team to watch and see improve. It also is a team that will struggle mightily at times. It will not be one that will compete for the title or even the top 4-5 places in the conference. I look forward to the season.

Just too many unknowns right now. If this is the roster, I think either Coleman starts right away or Warren starts as the hard-nosed, undersized four. If Aston returns and if she and Texas get a contract worked out within a reasonable time frame, I expect Aston to hit the recruiting trail hard to try to find a mature, court-ready post player to add to the roster. I listened to Ortiz several times in interviews and once sitting in with the broadcast crew on LHN. She impressed me a lot. Very mature. A classic "student of the game." I have no idea exactly what roles all these guards/wings will have, but I am excited to see what Ortiz will bring. I think she is a facilitating guard type of player. From what I have read about her and heard from her, the four would not make good use of her skills. I would be more optimistic than you about the team's ability to compete in conference. Celeste and Charlie will be two of the best players in the conference and give the team a lot to build around. I could see a rocky start followed by a competitive conference season. Based on returning rosters and known incoming recruits, I would vote Baylor and ISU to be 1/2 in the preseason poll.

IMO Texas needs a versatile player like Jada or an athletic 4 because in the Big 12 we’re not going to face many big front courts outside of Baylor and maybe West Virginia.

I agree that there are too many unknowns. If there are no roster changes the only SURE bets I see are Charli and Celeste. One would tend to think Joanne would pretty much be a given as well, but who knows what one of these new guards may bring or if Isabel may come on strong over the summer. With the current state of the world, who even knows what kind of off-season development can be achieved?

    Stay safe everyone.:hookem2:

Do we even know for sure yet the SR's won't get another year? I haven't seen anything official from the NCAA about BB.

Really doubt NCAA allows a re-do for Seniors...the blanket pass was for “Spring Sports”...WBB/MBB NOT a Spring Sport, IMHO...

I was looking for a thread which talks about the "play" of the team in the upcoming season, so I think this the right place? I almost put it into the "welcome Vic" thread, but I guess I'll try it here.

When Vic & coaches were hired, I immediately looked up their stats on turnovers. I was so tired of seeing our players bounce a ball off their shoe and out of bounds (a freak play that was more often than not) or the infamous "pass a ball where the receiver didn't even have a chance at the ball".

Looking at the NCAA site, I found the rankings of the last 8 years of MSU vs Texas in the subject "Turnover Margin", which is their way of Turnover percentage. Complex formula, but this is a reasonable explanation:
Turnover Percentage: The Trustworthy Measurement for Ball Security | Hudl Blog

Here is the data comparison on the NCAA ranking of teams with the best turnover margin. This is out of 348 schools. Texas, yeeesh, I didn't know it was that bad. And I didn't know MSU was that good. Exciting:

Remarkable improvement for MSU in 1 year. It does not surprise me one bit Texas was that bad.

One of the things Vic emphasized in his presser was that you can't score if you keep giving the ball to the other team. Hopefully he'll also make an impact in the boneheaded turnovers immediately at Texas.

People like winners. MSU's arena, built in 1975, holds 10,500

Still pretty pitiful turnout for a school with 40K+ students. Again, the effort must be made to make Women's BB (and Men's for that matter) a destination. CDC did pretty well with football...

Princeton listed at #25? For an Ivy that just lost the 5th overall pick in the draft, very optimistic.

Yeah this list is very bad. I mean I love being the underdog but Notre Dame was 13-18 last season so I am assuming the rankings are based off of where they believe the new coach can take the team. If that's the case then they are really disrespecting Vic Schaefer but when Vic takes this team to a big 12 championship then they are going to look very stupid

We should RV before Notre Dame, Ohio St, Syracuse, UNC, and Minnesota.

Im very anxious to see what we will look like this year. A LOT of different pieces are gonna be out there; I’m confident we will finish better than 19-11, but I think Baylor takes it one more year. 2021 could be another story.

Although, with Baylor’s current roster, I think we have a chance. They lost a lot of talent as well but we have signed better/more players since. Hope both Carrington and Mikesell don’t end up in Waco.

I think Carrington might just end up in Waco but even with her I do believe we have the pieces to compete/beat baylor. When I say pieces I mean coaching staff. We have always had as much as Baylor but in recent years we have not had the staff or game plan to beat Baylor. Like coach Harris said earlier that they require all players to play with an edge and toughness which is something that has not been happening recently. So we have the players and now staff to really give Baylor a run for there money.

In the interview with Craig Way, Vic was asked about the Arizona, UCONN and Stanford non-conference games. He said that he didn't know how the pandemic might affect scheduling and that Stanford announced they won't travel more than 300-400 miles to games this season. If something like that is implemented at Texas, that would drastically affect the schedule.

Is it correct we would play at Stanford this coming year? If so, and Stanford implements a 300-400 mile rule for themselves, I wonder if they might also apply that to incoming opponents?

What would Stanford when the NCAA tourney rolls around? Of course that's assuming there will be one (which I have doubts about).

Correct, at Stanford. I can’t find an announcement on Stanford’s athletics website mentioning travel restrictions - wonder if they’ve even made a public statement yet.

Well, there won't be a team playing 3 tougher non-conference opponents on the road than us at Arizona, Stanford, and UConn. Will help SOS, that's for sure.

Tennessee coming to town. Can't imagine another Top 25 opponent on the slate (at home), but quality opponents will help sell tickets.

That's great news! If any opponent will draw fans to the FEC this season, A&M will.

Did I hear Craig Way correctly saying we open the season at UConn? I don't like that at all. Even Karen opting to play at USF in the season opener last season was a mistake, IMO.

I don’t mind opening against a mid-level opponent you should be a favorite against if your team is ready to play - unfortunately this one wasn’t the first 8 games of this past season.
