    Joe,

I don't know the particulars about the funding, but CyFair has been bumping the of 9.99 rule since before I got out of Texas. Considering the debt load, they have to be getting corporate help from some source. I don't live in CFISD, but have worried about their NDR if we had a major recession, yet they have survived 1974, 1984, and now this problem.

What I heard was that the ISD would provide internet access through some special portal in the district's system. Maybe Dion understands it.

NOLA did this last Spring and the parents sold them to the pawnshop. Anyone looking for a new chrome book barely used, this is your opportunity.

Seriously. I also heard the same about another district in North Carolina (from a teacher).

Yep. Remember this next time you hear someone say our schools are underfunded.

They are, but is the school district going to go to the time and trouble to prosecute them? Besides, they replace these computers pretty regularly. The parents are likely stealing something the district was about to replace anyway. They don't particularly care.

"underfunded schools" can sometimes mean "we just HAVE to build a bazillion seat stadium for three football games per week...and...umm...oh yeah, the band will be able to practice in the parking lot."

    Proposals for Austin Police Department:
Here are two significant proposals to consider as part of the budget process. These are not small ideas and will take time and strong commitment to implement, but I believe we can adopt this formally as a whole and/or as budget riders in parts to ensure the public knows our intent while we work through the legal and operational transition.
The establishment of departments is part of the Council’s responsibility as defined in the Charter. I also believe these are compatible with other proposals that may be offered.
#1 - Reconstruct (take Police leadership positions and give them to civilians)
#2 - Deconstruct (sell Main Police station downtown and give money to black community)
Police budget proposal to Reconstruct and Deconstruct - City of Austin Council Message Board

The Teachers Unions are now threatening to strike if they have to go back to work, which is a little ironic

I keep reading that alot of these "online education" kids are just sleeping all morning. I dont have stats for it and dont know how we could get the stats but its pretty easy to visualize if you have ever had a teen living in your house.

Above I mentioned computers/dependable WiFi plus the free meals, but another area that might affect underprivileged kids disproportionately is that teachers are trained to recognize abuse. And perhaps suicidal tendencies. Bottom line, if you add it all up, the reasons to re-open the schools far outweigh the risks. It's not close. I dont think there is a single proven case anywhere in the entire world, proven through backtracking, of a teacher dying from covid-19 that they contracted from a student. And many countries have been back at full school participation for months. I think its all about politics and the kids are the pawns. It's pretty disgusting.

I heard 1/8 kids actually did the online work in the Spring.

There is no substitute for caring parents who make their kids learn. They will always have an advantage over kids little supervision.

My wife had only one kid in her class who basically disappeared once online learning started. However, she also had the Fall and early 2020 to establish a bond with the kids and their parents. Thus, she was very comfortable reaching out to parents when online assignments weren't turned in. And the parents were responsive to her because, again, she had already established that bond and regular communication with them prior.

She worries greatly about attempting to do online learning prior to having that pre-established relationship.

Here, the Gov of South Dakota addresses why kids should be back in school

" .... First, when it comes to children, the virus doesn’t impact them even on the same level as the flu. A JAMA Pediatrics report states, “Our data indicate that children are at far greater risk of critical illness from influenza than from COVID-19.” The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reports, “SARS-CoV-2 appears to behave differently in children and adolescents than other common respiratory viruses, such as influenza, on which much of the current guidance regarding school closures is based.”

Toronto’s world-renowned Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) echoed this finding, saying, “evidence is mounting that children may be less susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection and may be less likely to transmit the virus to others.” Daniel Koch, Switzerland’s head of public health, has said that even when children test positive for the virus, their viral load is low, and it seems that adults tend to infect children, not the other way around.

Second, we know that it is extremely harmful to kids to keep schools closed. We know that children thrive on routine and being in supportive, social environments. We know that the loss of human connections for many of these kids is driving increases in stress, anxiety, and depression. We know this to be true most especially for our most vulnerable students.

The AAP succinctly notes, “Schools are fundamental to child development and well-being and provide our children with academic instruction, social and emotional skills, safety, reliable nutrition, physical/speech and mental health therapy, and opportunities for physical activity, among other benefits.” I say all of this because not all kids are in safe home environments; for some students, school is the safest and most predictable place they spend their time.

A similarly critical point is that long-distance learning may have gotten us through the initial crisis, but it is not a long-term solution. One reason for this is because of the great disparities in remote learning. Initial nationwide research suggests that students will return to school in the fall with roughly 70 percent of learning gains in reading relative to a typical school year, and less than 50 percent in math, according to projections from the NWEA. Remote learning may work for some, but it is not the answer for most....."

There shouldn't be a need for federal funds if the district is not going to be open. After all, the plant operations become an unnecessary expense save for keeping the A/C running in the low-80's. No kids/teachers/administrators and you have no need to be cooling it into the mid-70s's. No trash pick-up and mopping of floors is needed on a daily basis.

Some landscape maintenance is required to keep grass and bushes in a kempt and orderly manner.

Oh, and no (minimal) transportation costs since no students means no bus routes. As with the landscaping, the buses and other vehicles should be started and moved from time to time just to keep everything lubricated.

This is the University but equally insane
    U. Texas-Austin Proposes Political Litmus Tests on Hiring and Promotions for Diversity
The University of Texas at Austin is plunging head-first into the murky waters of “diversity, equity, and inclusion,” as per a recently proposed plan issued by the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. The National Association of Scholars obtained the draft proposal, titled the “Faculty Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Strategic Plan” from a UT Austin employee who shall remain anonymous.

The proposal, henceforth referred to as the Plan, is based on a 2017 UT Austin “blueprint plan” called the “Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan” (UDIAP). The UDIAP was created “to reflect upon how the best education can be provided for students from all backgrounds, especially those that historically have been marginalized.” But the UDIAP doesn’t stop at reflection—it establishes the goals for achieving “diversity and inclusion” at UT Austin in eight “focus areas”:

    – University Leadership
    – Campus Climate and Culture
    – Students
    – Faculty
    – Staff
    – Alumni and Community
    – Pre-K–12 Partnerships and Education Pipeline
    – Communications, Assessment, and Accountability"

    This was particularly signaling
"An excellent and diverse faculty benefits our educational and instructional experiences and strengthens our research, scholarship, and creativity.

Someone at link asked for a legitimate verifiable study that show that. I don't see the words standards or merit.

Is UT saying it will shift the balance away from 99% Marxists? I highly doubt that. This will be used to finish the job so to speak.

Hard to go back to work when so many of the teachers are still working their summer job with Antifa. I have no problem with them going on strike and the school districts replacing them. I live in NEISD here in San Antonio. Starting pay for teachers in this district is 53K. I'm sure there are a lot of teachers in the poorer districts that would jump at the chance to teach in this district.

Then again I would also jump at the opportunity to bust the union by firing all of them and making them all start from scratch.

UT got too liberal for me a long time ago. If I had a college age kid, I wouldn't encourage them to go there. Supporting the football team is an almost 60-year-old habit that I can't seem to break. That and posting on this website are about my only links to my alma mater.

It is usually true that some number of any group of rioters in the USA are being compensated by some Soros offshoot
Is that really true of the rioting teachers here?
And, if true, does that mean the union is getting its cut too? Because you know they have their hands out
This is a pretty perverse situation
If we had an honest media, they would have already looked into it

By the way, none of my money goes to UT any more either.

For me it depends on what degree they are trying to get and what other options they have. If they are in business or engineering, it is still a good option.
