checkout this show...........I wouldn't think the fans of the Monkees back in the day would be Hendrix fans also.........could be wrong.
There was a time where opening act was not always some group or individual that those there for the main event cared about. Opening act was an excuse to partake in umm...other activities. We even saw this with a few of the Texxas Jam lineups 40'ish years ago...
IIRC, spring - summer 1967 Jimi Hendrix Experience was just breaking onto the music scene in the US so I can see why they would be the opening act but it does seem odd to have paired them with the Monkees!
Worster, 67 was the explosion of new artist. Monterrey Pop Festival featured the Airolane, Doors, Mommas & Poppas, but introduced some relative unknowns to the national music scene: Janis & Big Brother The Who Hendrix Otis Redding. Among others tThose four brought the house down in what I believe was the greatest music festival of all time. Musically, for me, it far exceeded Woodstock.
Saw Hendrix in concert in San Antonio in '68. By then, The Jimi Hendrix Experience album had come out and he was hot. I gotta say he wasn't that great in person. I don't think he had the right combination of drugs going or something. He was kind of flat. He did the perfunctory guitar smashing at the end of the show. Speaking of Dick Clark. I went to see one of his shows in '66. Paul Revere and The Raiders were the headliners. They look goofy now, but those boys could play. I was glad to see Once Upon A Time In Hollywood use some of their music.
