I don't totally agree. I've only seen one of the sequels, and it was pretty lame - have no interest in seeing the other two. I don't think the prequels were total crap. I think the actor who played Anakin Skywalker was a weanie and too much of a pretty boy. I'm not sure if that was the intent of the character or if it was the actor himself, but I was expecting the guy who becomes Darth Vader to be tougher and a little more of a badass. I also think the Padme character was lame, even if she was hot. Again, I was expecting more for Princess Leia's mother. However, I think the plot was pretty good (especially Revenge of the Sith), and I think the rest of the cast was quite good.

Come on Portland, you can do better

How has Austin avoided this stuff?

I would quit if I was a policeman in Portland. Portland deserves chaos at this point. Let everyone there see what happens when you let communist revolutionaries run the streets.

That is a great question. Unfortunately, if the enemy has it way, police will be relegated to dealing with the folks only using foam cuffs, therapeutic hugs, and de-escalating violence with kind words.

Ive always said Houston over the decades was saved, for the most part, from large scale riots and the like because its just too damn hot to riot. Maybe that's true for Austin too?

It’s not as crowded either. Who drives their car 15 miles to riot somewhere?

we have been in the 60's and low 70's this Summer....is that "perfect" rioting weather?

The difference isn't the crowdedness or the heat. It's the politics. When they trash Portland, not only will the mayor tell the police not to do anything, but the governor will largely leave the situation alone. If they trash Houston or Austin, the police will eventually stop them. (Those cities are liberal, but they're not hard-left radical the way cities like Portland is.) Even if they don't, Texas has a Republican governor who would be much quicker to call in the national guard.

    I'm sticking with the heat
Same reason the TDCJ was prone to schedule executions at the Huntsville Unit for midday July or August.

Since its Houston and before your time, I am guessing you dont know the history of the late 1950s and 60s there? During a period of civil rights strife and conflict all over the country, especially in the South, Houston had none of it. I think there was one sit-in at one diner by some students from TSU and that was about it. No dogs, no Natl Guard, no conflicts on buses, no white northerners were hung. It's kind of an interesting story on how that was accomplished. But the short version is that Jim Crow laws were quietly rescinded, without much fanfare or media attention. In fact, the media, especially the Post, even played a key roll in all of it behind the scenes. Plus, of course, there was the heat and humidity. Oh, and the mosquitoes too.

    Joe,

There was a march in Houston. When they crossed Bagby headed to the police station, Herman Short had officers with rifles standing on the 45 overpass and a barricade with guns and dogs on the bridge over Buffalo Bayou. Basically a line in the sand.

    Crowd dispersed.

Of course, back then the community had great leaders of principal and honor like MacK Hannah, Johnny Randle, and ethical leaders not out to line there pockets

Now it is hard to believe there were ever politicians like that.

They weren't politicians; they were community leaders. Never confuse the two, because they can never be the same person.
