I knew that there was something wrong with that program with the slew of transfers out in the last two years. But reading the article made me disgusted. But this is Tech. They are one of the schools in our conference that gives their coach too much leeway and covers for them until they can't any longer.

Lawsuits. That's the only tune Tech will listen to.

She started off having assembled an excellent staff, and got a couple of decent transfers... But it seems like all the wheels are falling off with the inability to retain assistants and the transfers out of the program.

I knew something was wrong when I did a timeline of the different assistant coaches which had left her program at Tech each season.

I imagine any Tech player who transfer out will get immediate eligibility to play in the coming season; we'll see if that also applies to transferring within the Big 12 conference.

Seeing quite a few names being thrown around as possible replacements. Why do people keep throwing Becky Hammon’s name out there for every D1 WBB head coaching job? I assumed it was because they don’t follow WBB but at least 2 were HS girls BB coaches. If she wanted a head coaching job in WBB, she would have had one 5 years ago.

    Some other names:
Steve Gomez - Lubbock Christian HC
Erin Grant - Southern Cal AC
    Cori Close - UCLA HC
Krista Gerlich - UT Arlington HC (Tech retired her jersey)
Lance White - Pitt HC (assistant at Tech under Sharp)
    Karen Aston

Cori Close would be insane to leave UCLA for the great plains. Karen obviously has the best D1 resume of anyone on this list, not sure she wont hold out for something better because Tech is definitely a project job that will take some years. After all it took to make us relevant in the top 15 year in and year out, I am not sure she would want to take and even tougher job. Would be a home-run hire for them though

Can’t believe Kamie’s name hasn’t come up yet. Lubbock native currently at a program in the bottom 1/3rd of a deep PAC-12. The reverse Leach? Wazzu to Tech.

Now this sounds like a possible good fit for both sides. I think Tech would be a better job than Washington St for Etheridge. She really needs to get a good recruiter on her staff though. She has made no recruiting progress at Washington State that I can see.

Clerical error led to USA Today story. From one of the co-authors:

In the state of Texas, the public information law allows governmental bodies (such as state universities) to appeal to the state Attorney General if it feels that records being requested are exempt from disclosure. This process is often done reflexively: I’ve probably made at least 50 requests to Texas universities over the last year, and at least half have been sent to the AG — a number of which quite obviously merited no exemption. In theory, this outside adjudicator seems helpful, but in practice it amounts to an easy delay tactic. Once a request is made, the governmental body (state university) has up to 15 business days to file a brief to the Attorney General Open Records Division, arguing its legal basis for a denial. If it fails to do so successfully, or within that permitted time frame, it must disclose the records or file a challenge in state district court.

As it came to pass, Texas Tech attempted to file its denial brief about my request on July 11, 2019 — the 15th business day after I had emailed it — but accidentally uploaded the wrong document into the public records electronic filing system. The school evidently was not aware of this error for two more months when, on Sept. 9, it received notice from the AG’s Office that it had failed to comply with the procedural requirements for an appeal and was therefore required to turn over the documents to me, posthaste.

Instead, in a Sept. 26 letter to Attorney General Ken Paton, the school pleaded for a mulligan.

“It is evident that TTU simply made a clerical error and by no means was attempting to delay or impede the public’s access to public information,” the letter, written by the school’s associate general counsel Ronny Wall, stated. “Thus, TTU is of the opinion that while it may have violated the technicalities of the statute, it did not violate the true purpose of the statute.”

Kamie spent one year after graduating as a graduate assistant at UT, but has since stayed far away from Texas during her coaching career. I'm inclined to think Krista Gerlich may get the nod???

Well considering the same AD who didn't properly vet the coach he just fired will be doing the next search, maybe they need to hire a PI for additional background check.

Didn’t Hocutt also hire Billy Gillispie - the MBB coach who resigned after player mistreatment allegations? 3rd time’s a charm?

You know the thing is that Stollings worked for Dawkins before at NM State and then the roles were flipped at Tech. I wonder if Stollings learned that type of coaching from Dawkins, who was accused of abuse at NM State?

"New Mexico State’s investigation found Lowry Dawkins threatened to kill one player, pulled another player’s hair and pushed players in conditioning to the point that some became sick. After Lowry Dawkins was reassigned to assistant athletic director, Stollings was named interim coach and eventually resigned in support of Lowry Dawkins."

Stollings felt strongly enough about Lowry Dawkins she resigned in support of her and then brought her on staff at Minnesota and Tech.

I know some posters here were impressed by her and even felt that she would be a good replacement for Karen; I just never saw it. Not that any of us knew what was going on inside her program, but I'm sure we can all breathe a sigh of relief she did not receive consideration to coach our program.

I was one who was impressed with the improvement I saw in Tech after she was hired... but I never thought she was an ideal candidate for UT by any stretch. Having said that, I'd have taken just about anyone if it meant being rid of KA. Oh well, glad we fixed our problem months ago now Tech has a chance to fix theirs.

One article I read said the Tech AD had been made aware of the extent of the problems in a verbal report on June 29 from an appointed university internal review group. For unknown reasons, he took no action until the info became public via USA Today a month later. Shame on him.

I watched the press conference yesterday and Hocutt’s ‘performance’ would have been laughable if the situation he was trying to diffuse was different. For Stollings and Gillispie, Texas Tech should really be thinking about making a change. Athletic directors don’t lose their jobs after firing 1 or 2 of their own coaching hires due to poor W-L records but ignoring the red flags as he’s done twice? The university should expect a better return on their investment:

Over the past few days, we have learned a lot about Hocutt, a rising star in college sports whose $1.85-million salary for this year makes him the fourth-highest paid athletics director in the country.
