The taxpayer subsidy is to fund deliveries to remote and difficult to serve locations. Parcel post is a money maker for the post office and both FedEx and UPS often use it for last mile delivery. Again all of the alternatives require people and businesses to be wired and computer literate. We may be there someday but we aren't yet.

Depends on where you live and how much you can afford. Some services at USPS are profitable, even if it charges a fraction of the cost of their for-profit rivals.

 

My point is that the USPS as it currently functions, is not a necessity due to alternative shipping options and email.

The are positives and negatives to living remotely, but it’s not the government’s duty to overcome the negatives.

 

Both UPS and Fedex rely heavily on USPS. They have their SurePost and SmartPost programs through USPS. Add in Amazon and you have USPS 3 largest customers. You can't just flip that switch overnight. I would be fine with a clear detailed plan to either shut down USPS or continue to reduce the govt subsidy but Trump's plan putting the JackA he has appointed as postmaster general is not the right approach.

 

In a competitive marketplace where all the major carriers use USPS for some last mile delivery and shared logistics what happens to the price charged by UPS, Fedex, DHL et all if USPS is not available?

You will pay more for their service due to reduced competition for similar sized/weight items.

Amazon already figured this one out.

Even if broadband speed is available for internet access there is no mention of cost of service. USPS is pay per peice sent no received by the destination.

 

USPS has lost numerous bills, checks, letters, and merchandise addressed to me over the years. At my previous rural address, I received mail addressed to others and didn't get all my mail on a weekly basis. It was a rare week that I did not receive the wrong mail. I would actually deliver misdirected mail to nearby neighbors and many did the same for me. I complained numerous times to local postmaster but service never improved.

As a result of poor unreliable service, I took steps to electronically automate all of my bills and checks, move prescriptions to UPS or FedEx, and put all correspondence on email or social media. All I get now are ads. Why do I have to spend my tax dollars on this crappy service when I have spent my time and money to make it completely unnecessary?

 

Even without deliberate fraud this is another reason why massive mail-in ballots are bad. Too many will get lost in the system.

Societies evolve. Technology and innovation are wonderful things when applied correctly. Humans driving around in jeeps with the driver side on the right will one day be a thing of the past. We can just all sit around and be nostalgic about it.

You are very fortunate to live in an area where the local post office is doing a good job. I've moved a few times in my life. The place I lived from 2008-2019 had a horribly run post office that rarely went a week without losing mail.

I looked into buying a UPS center franchise a few years back. After interviewing a few owners, I found the best chance for success was to locate in an area such as my own, where the post office was doing a horrible job. Apparently, this is not an uncommon problem.

I am sure the savings from not having a USPS or a substantially smaller one would easily pay for it. There should also be a process where the local pharmacy could fill the prescriptions and be reimbursed by the VA.

 

The USPS does an exceptional job on a national basis. I have owned two companies that were 80% dependent on USPS delivery and was very satisfied with their performance over the years.

We would ship 5000+ mailing addresses a week and the delivery compliance was so good that we dropped the insurance and self insured. Failed delivery was an extreme exception. When USPS provided Delivery Confirmation on Priority and 1st class mail with electronic barcode confirmation they were the most cost effective carrier for under 2 lbs in the US. Probably still are for 2 day delivery.

Three companies have a long history with USPS and probably would not have grown to their current success if USPS was the failure that many suggest.

Netflix was USPS delivery long before streaming was feasible. They continue a delivery business today with USPS to some parts of the US that has inadequate internet capability.

Ebay is a success story of USPS reliability.

Amazon started as a book seller and uses USPS today.

Perhaps some politics has entered the current USPS discussion.
