This is probably a lot safer than it looks. First, they've undoubtedly practiced this, a lot. Second, it's not like they're shooting a cannon off next to him. Third, the spurs are all giving him a substantial amount of leash so he's got room to move without hitting anyone. Fourth, they've spent a lot more time with the animal than any of us have, so I'm going to go with the handlers in terms of what does or does not "freak him out."

 

As Bevo gets older he'll naturally get less frisky. With that said, his entrance was pretty freakin' special!

They used to (I was told by a source I believe), give him a massive Valium enema before putting him in the north end of the Cotton Bowl, with Smokey, the LHB and 50,000 fans in a pretty confined space for the OU game. I recall in 1990 Bevo had gotten loose on Friday, and an almost totally white substitue Bevo was used. A Cash touchdown with 2:00 left on 4th down and missed OU field goal on the last play resulting in a 14-13 Longhorn win, "Buttermilk" Bevo was whipping his handlers around as Smokey kept going off.

If they can get Bevo to do a full fledged "Ralphie" run, it would be great. But it seems like a high risk effort.

 

What the heck, they cut that gif off too short, they left out the part where he got his front feet down and bowed up, like "I'm F'ing Here!"

I was at that godawful game, but Bevo made me laugh out loud while the Neb fans boo'd . It was awesome.

 

Athletic department announced that Bevo will be on the field this season regardless of the COVID situation because doctors believe Bevo is steerile.

Still crack up when people think he's drugged - I guess I can kind of understand it because when you see a steer in a random field they are running around chasing cars as they drive by like crazy with tons of energy.

On a side note - I wish we did had have drugs for XIII , he was a mean SOB...

True story. I was on a motorcycle Christmas toy ride in the country a few years back and we were shut down for a long time while the ambulance picked up a guy on one of the lead bikes. A longhorn bull (maybe a steer) ran through the fence and hit his bike.

Large livestock are not pets. If you have ever been in a loading pen with cattle you know what I mean. And Longhorns are but a few generations away from wild animals. I have often thought that Texas was not cautious enough with Bevo, at times. That incident with that fat GA mutt could have turned out very badly.
