I don't demand perfection, what I would like, for one of the highest paid coaches in college football is:
Better that 25-15 after 3 years
Better than 60.7% conference wins
Better than 1-4 against P5 out of conference opponents, regular season
Better than 1-3 against OU
Better than 3-7 against OU/OSU/TCU combined
More than zero conference championships after 3 years
Not having to score with 1 second left, to only lose to Baylor by 2 touchdowns, instead of 3. Baylor, a team that was what, 1-10 two seasons before?
Not having to kick a FG with 1 second left, to avoid losing, at home, to Kansas.
Not having the 107th ranked defense in college football.
The above are not high goals. No one has slammed Herman for not winning a national championship, or being Top 5. His claim to fame so far, as such, is three winning seasons and three bowl wins, which shows you how far the program sunk under the living joke that was the Charlie Strong Experience.
The Sugar Bowl was a great win, the Alamo Bowl was a good win. Al Bundy once scored 4 TD's in a single game too. Unless Texas is OK with turning into the Aggs, and hanging its hat on winning various random bowl games, nice at the time and quickly forgotten by the rest of college football, he needs to produce championships, beat OU / OSU / TCU more times than he loses, and bring Texas back into national significance.
Seemingly unlike the players, who are grown men yet need to "feel the love" and be told how great they are, I don't need a coach to say nice things about me. I need a coach that produces wins. So far that's not been accomplished. Will it this year - it should, OU is down on paper, so is TCU. Senior QB at Texas. If not this year, when? And possibly, who?
Also, compare and contrast Herman and Lincoln Riley from OU. Both have been there for 3 years. Riley is 36-6, with 3 conference championships, 3 playoff appearances, 2 Heisman winners, 3-1 against Texas, 3-0 against TCU, 3-0 against OSU. He took over a much better program than Herman did, no question, but he's accomplished great things, while Herman has two nice bowl wins.
If the coach of Texas can't compete with the accomplishments of the coach of OU, it's going to be time to find one who can.
