I don’t agree with how Foster walked away from his team, but is there another side to this issue we don’t know about? Was he told to leave the field? What part, if any, does the DC and his position coach play in the situation?
Foster deserves the opportunity to redeem himself if not for any other reason than how he played hurt last season. If he was able to be thrown into the fire with his injuries, he’s good enough to play now.
As I stated right off the bat, I don’t agree with how Foster reacted, but there’s more to the story than what we know, or think we know.

I was about to post the same thing.
I don't believe anybody on this board was present on the sideline.
Foster has a new position coach.
    Can there be some miscommunication?
Did Foster feel he was lied to in some way?
No, storming off the field isn't how you handle it.
But nobody here knows exactly what happened.
Put the tar and feathers back in the shed for now.

We all agree dessertion leaves a bad taste, but in these covid and anarchist times people don't think straight. Some forgiveness and punishment is in order. I am sure Herman feels for the kid and will try to help him out. Of course this is a one time thing. And it also depends on Foster's attitude at this moment. I know I messed up as a teenager but turned things around. We'll see.

Any ‘old timers’ here remember Frank Medina? I have a feeling this issue with Foster, or any athlete, would’ve gotten to the point it did Saturday night.

Also, remember, "he's back lifting weights" doesn't mean "everyone's just gonna pretend it never happened."

Quite possibly he was told to do some workouts right away while they figured out details - something like "The coaches and team leadership will have to to discuss how we're going to handle this and what the repercussions will be. In the meantime, if you want to eventually earn your way onto that field on gameday, start by resuming your conditioning and weight-lifting right now rather than falling further behind everyone."

Or maybe he's pulling a George Costanza and gonna just act like it never happened and hope nobody notices.

I know how I would handle it. I would put it to a vote of the team. If the team voted UNANIMOUSLY to allow him to come back, then I would tell him, “OK, son, you’ve got another chance. Don’t blow it.”

Amazing how many usually reasonable posters are defending or coming up with possibly defensible scenarios for this guy.

It’s also possible that Herman let Foster back on the team only after making him stand up in front of his teammates and apologize, or some kind of gesture of contrition that drove the point home for everyone.

Bottom line this is a team and coaches issue and no one else has any power and therefore any effect on how it is resolved.

I remember being young and frustrated. Eventually one learns self-reliance and self-esteem and puts the boots back on and does the best one can and progresses in life. Wishing the team and BJ the best is my approach.

After listening to Herman’s presser today, the staff will do their best in getting game reps to as many as 3 or 4 deep in some positions. That’s not a bad plan. It’s up to the players to work hard and do what is asked of them. Get on board or get out of the way.

Running the bleachers at DKR to get back on the team would be a gesture. If you QUIT, there has to be consequences, or you end up with a bunch of p******, and no discipline !!!

You must be new to the internet. Obviously I normally wouldn't call anyone names in person. That doesn't make Foster's actions any less of a b*tch move. Extremely immature for a veteran player who should be a team leader. Why dont you focus on his lack of character instead of scolding me for calling him out.

Do you agree that his behavior on this matter is completely inappropriate?

WOW! Who wrote that for Herman. That is the best comment from him since he has arrived.

I don't know what occurred, but the play of our safeties left a lot to be desired.

I hope Foster is 100% for TT. His frosh year he destroyed on defense. Then his shoulder got jacked up and he couldn't tackle anyone. Has GOT to be frustrating to get a new DC and now little PT after gutting it up last year....

It was in the first game against a paid opponent. Plenty of valid reasons why he didn't play a lot that game - either those were not communicated to him or he didn't care about it and still wanted to be on the field, which isn't his decision to make.

Doesn't really matter, as stated before this inside baseball stuff is up to the coaches to figure out what best to do, and then be judged on the team record and accomplishments. Which have not been a whole lot so far in Herman's tenure, save a good Sugar bowl win. B12 Champs, or failed year / failed coach.

Ha, it's like the poster on here who used to have the signature with the Moe Syzlac quote about Bronko Nagurski.

    Maybe it's not like that...

I was hurt in a Sat night high school game and was sent over for the Texas trainers to tend to me on Sunday morning. Picture a training room full of UT players from their game the night before and some high schooler taking the trainers‘ time and attention. Frank himself took the time to come over and take a look at me and ask questions. He appeared to be genuinely concerned.

My recollection of his reputation during his time at Texas was that of a dedicated, caring trainer. I did not read “Meat.......” and don’t intend to do so, but if it was honest, it would have something nice to say about Medina.

No, it didn’t call him out. Said he was intense if I recall.
The book was written by a UT player in the early 60s who ended up quitting the team, and it didn’t paint a great picture of UT
The book also talked about Pat Culpepper a linebacker for UT that ended up being a coach.

About 15 years ago I was calling on a customer and in walks his buddy Pat Culpepper, I had a really good talk with Pat, a really super nice guy. I worked up the courage to ask him about Gary Shaw, the author that wrote the book and he said that he really didn’t remember much about Gary only that his father was really hard on Gary.
The author passed away homeless in Denton several years ago, sad story

I lament the way the game has changed where bone-jarring vicious safeties like BJF patrolled the D-backfield striking fear into opposing receivers. Opposing WRs and TEs hesitated when going over the middle (or at least they were off their game and swivel-headed when going over the middle). Having a Jack Tatum*, John Hagy+, or BJ Foster roaming the secondary made opposing WRs and TEs less effective.

Yes, I understand the reasons for the targeting rule, but I still miss having the old-school enforcers at safety. I still like BJF, but the game may have passed him by. Now it's coverage skills first, second, and third, followed by run support for DBs.

    * Against Jack Tatum, all WR and TE not named Russ Francis performed less than their norm on routes up the middle (if they would even go there at all).

+C'mon, even the biggest targeting rule proponents must admit they enjoy the old highlight reels of Hagy's hits!

Not sure of the implication. Two things for sure. The expectations were that you played hurt and if you could not play you did not lay on the field. You got off of the field on your own.
