OK, need to draw from the deep well that is Hornfans knowledge. My wife and I got married in Mexico in January. We have a Mexican marriage certificate in Spanish. I was under the impression that you could register your marriage certificate once you got back to the US and get an English version (they wouldn't do an English version down there). However, I just called the city clerk (NYC) and the lady I spoke with had no idea what I was talking about. Anyone have any idea what I am talking about?
Are you sure you got married and that you didn't legally purchase a goat or chicken? I don't know the answer to your question, and there isn't a lot of info online. This is the best I could come up with. Link
I got married in Mexico as well. A few weeks after we got back we went to teh Travis County courthouse and got a marriage certificate there. I imagine NYC is close to the same, maybe you just spoke to a moron or someone new
When you say marriage certificate, do you mean that you actually had another technical wedding? or just some document that recognizes the foreign marriage?
Technical certificate. You wait in the same line as people renewing their license plates. Take a number. Wait a half hour. You both sign. Ten bucks. The end.
I did the opposite of taco. We got married just before we left the country. I imagine one way or another you are legally married when you do it out of the country but I didn't want to find out the hard way. In Texas you would be common law at the least.
No, we didn't have another ceremony. We both just went up to some line at the courthouse and told them the story. They printed out a certificate saying we were legally married. They even had special paper to put in the laserjet. Not sure what we did with that.
As someone who got married in another country and never bothered getting an English/local version as it's never come up and we've never been asked for one, why would someone need to do this? P.S. They messed up my wife's birthdate on our wedding cetificate and made her a year older. That has given me years of fun.
