I'd be shocked if the threshold was 6 but even at 7-8, teams with positional versatility will have significant advantages. I know this subject has been talked about and debated with other sports but has Vic specifically said how he or the team will handle “The Eyes of Texas” song after games?
He has not addressed it directly but he has been pretty open about his love for the eyes of Texas. Coach Vic is all about pleasing fans but I believe the players are more important to the coaches. There is a clear divide within the fans so I expect their to be some display of unity from the team but also staying and acknowledging will be a requirement.
Given how active the assistants have been around social justice reform and using their "voice" I wouldn't imagine this would be a requirement for our players. Much like they're doing in FB encouraged and welcomed to participate if you want, not required if you don't. Not to mention that women's sports in general tend to be the tip of the spear around social activism in general, hard to imagine this being an issue.

Mad respect for Sam. I didn't like how the volleyball team huddled in a circle. I thought it was disrespectful to the fans as their backs were turned as the fans sang. But lining up and showing your horns was much improved, even though the volleyball team didn't sing.
Well he better damn well have a plan for the recruiting trail because if I am coaching at any school within shouting distance of a recruit who's considering Texas I will make sure that the player and their parents know the history of this song (only the bad parts) and reinforce that they will be required to stand and sing/show appreciation. Having coached many kids of color in the last 15 years, I can ASSURE YOU this will have a negative impact and I am a graduate of the damn school. As much pride and appreciation as I have for this institution, I don't even know if I could in good conscience tell a kid to come to Texas without having a full throated conversation about this and voicing my displeasure. Requiring it is a bridge too far IMO
No wonder why Texas is an underachieving joke as an athletic department. Fans more worried about a stupid song than the horrible coach.
How big of a hit did Baylor WBB recruiting take after an institution-wide dismissive attitude toward rampant sexual assault, including assault of female athletes, followed by an attempted coverup?
That's what I have been saying. These minority kids are not going to want to come to Texas with this show going on. As a parent looking in their is no way I would want my child coming here especially seeing the way these fans talk about these players(football). It's too much going on for no reason because if the football team was 4-0 these talks would not be happening. Just like when volleyball huddled in a circle, nobody said anything because they won. So everyone is just looking for something to complain about because we are losing and they can't do anything about it.
I think the complaints pre-dated the season. There's no way I'd dispute the tone on this board would be much softer had the team steamrolled through the schedule to date including a major beat-down of OU. But I'm not bothered by the reaction and the 2-2 record. It's hard to separate the two. If the team is 2-2 (a fact) because of the off the field focus (social issue focus is a fact; impact on performance is speculation) then the complaints would be possibly divorced from the idea that winning cures all ills. I wasn't sure they could reasonably play to expectations given their busy schedules (class/football) along with the added civil rights efforts. In the end, the results are not surprising to me. Now, we can say that civil rights are far more important than winning on the field and I'd totally agree with that. But the university is paying a huge price for this. Is that fair? I'll let you answer it.
I don't think that their social justice stance is affecting what's happening on the field whatsoever. It's not like they are skipping practices for this reason and the volleyball team is a great example of that. They are doing the exact same thing as the football team but they are winning. This was not a problem last season and they still lost so I don't see how people can correlate losing to social justice issues. The problem is the fans. The team has already said they are good and together, the only people causing divide are the FANS! They need something to blame losing on and take their anger out on because they can't do anything else.
Actually, on Orangebloods.com after that home win against Kansas, there were several posters who were irate with the volleyball team's decision to huddle in a circle instead of raising their horns; some very rude, hateful, and immature comments were made, including a couple of posters stating "I hope the team loses the next time they play." So, winning does not cure all.
I think we have to look at the expectation. We have Sam back as the starting quarterback; a preseason Heisman candidate. What did OU have? A drop-off from Mayfield/Murray/Hurts. This was possibly the year UT was pointing to and they lost. They should have lost to Tech. I can't sit here and say the off the field activities are the reason this team is a disappointment. I have no proof. But when you see the starting quarterback virtually alone singing the Eyes and the rest of the team in the locker room, then I think it could be a problem. At the same time, I remember playing sports and I didn't love everyone I played with but I gave it everything I had. I was hoping the players would be motivated by the negative fan base and win one for themselves. I always enjoyed playing on the opposing field. It riled me up and I wanted to win in front of the other team's girl friends. But for whatever reason, they haven't been able to rise to the occasion. Coaching? Activisim? Over-rated? I can't swear to any of it. The question is this: absent the meetings and protests, would this team be further along. Whatever you do with your time contains the opportunity cost of what you choose not to do. More film? More reps? And then there's team morale. It's hard to separate it. I'm not trying to blame it on that. But it is a fact and I wonder what they supplanted with their activist time? Partying? Girls? Books? Was football always on the forefront even though we were hearing noises about not playing or helping with recruiting? Maybe this year will prove to have been a necessary sacrifice but I do not commoditize the MILLIONS of dollars pouring (creating jobs and throw-off money to the University along with charitable endeavors) as something that easily marginalized and ignored. If the university takes a financial hit then who pays? I guess nobody cares. It doesn't hurt me. I'm not the one in charge or the recipient of construction money (South End Zone) or the charity that the University might fund via excess football funds (not to mention the other sports, including that volleyball team, that need the subsidy. In ten years we may look back and say it was a seminal moment in race relations. I don't agree with the way it was opened up. I am definitely in agreement that Confederate icons are offensive and should go. That is easy for me. I can't speak to the Eyes because I didn't go to UT. It's not my heart that grows warm watching the players bond with the fans. Some can say FU to the old guys who have spent thousands of dollars on the university but I can't. That's because I'm not the one helping this university to be great in all manner of ways including the education and facilities.
It may not cure all but I guarantee it wouldn't be this big of a problem if we were winning. You will always have the older fans stuck in their ways and that's not going to change. I just say this and continually to say if you really hate the players that much then simply don't watch the games. The same people who said they are done with the team are the people still complaining. If your done than just let it go and don't watch but at this point this entire argument between fans and players etc.. is absolutely ridiculous

I've always wondered how coaches can guess/devine in pre-season who will be good. So I went back to the last 3 years of pre and post season awards given by the Big 12. Of course, coaches aren't allowed to vote for their own players.
Kim Mulkey gives Vic the nod for her vote (can’t vote for herself) and Texas is picked to finish 2nd in the Big12. Iowa State is a very close 3rd but I expected the order to be switched.
If Texas hasn't worked through all the 'new' they'll have to deal with (8/13 new players, new coaches, new system) in a shortened non-conference schedule before Big12 play starts, I don't think it's that far-fetched. Iowa State has a few experienced players returning with full knowledge of what they do and how they do it along with 1 of the 3 best players in the conference (Ashley Joens). They'll have some issues in the paint with only 2 players over 6'1" (both 6' 3") but that's not uncommon for them. If Texas is still acclimating as conference play begins and gets ISU and Baylor in the first few games, could be too big of a hole to dig out of without some unexpected help (upsets). Based on the point distribution of the poll results, it seems the Big12 coaches expect it to be top heavy with 3 teams and then a mad scramble for everyone else.
