After following these first two years of Tom Herman coached Texas football, I can say I am thoroughly impressed. His ability to locate, recruit, evaluate and place talent is remarkable. I had a great feeling about him when I found out that he was part of Mensa, so I knew he was the brainy cerebral type of guy we needed to run this program.
So now after a huge win over Georgia, and a 3rd ranked recruiting class, I am feeling we are " Primed, Locked and Loaded " for great upcoming success. I simply can't find anything to be critical of except...
    This one thing.
If you look at the three first defeats, and see that they were list by an aggregate 9, NINE points, then you know how close we were to even bigger things this last season.
Therefore, I find that our lack of On Field Discipline, is the # 1 thing Tom needs to focus on fixing this upcoming year. To be clearer, I am talking about the oodles and oodles of PENALTIES the team is hit with.
I knew that if there was any way we would beat Georgia, Texas would have to find a way to play "mistake free" Football for 60 minutes. AAAANNND they almost did. For a little over 40 minutes it was very clean. Suddenly, we went back to our old ways, and lo and behold the lead evaporated. And it got so bad we actually had 2, TWO EJECTIONS ON TWO CONSECUTIVE PLAYS!! Unreal.
If you look at the KSU GAME we had 10 penalties for 78 yards JUST IN THE FIRST HALF alone, as compared to 0 for KSU..
This has got to stop for TEXAS to take the next step to become truly CHAMPIONSHIP
    READY.
Here's hoping Tom gets it done!
    Thoughts?

The bigger issue is that we had the disapline problem with a very strong senior laden team. next year we won't have the senior leadership we had this year. That is a bigger concern.

with that said, outside of LSU and Oklahoma, Texas is flat out better than everyone else they face. The talent disparity is insane.

My biggest issue right now is playing consistently instead of playing up or down to the level of opponents.

I think he needs to focus on special teams. Our special teams numbers were terrible in a lot of areas. Special teams was a liability for us last year. Herman needs to make it an asset the way it was during the Mack Brown years.

And Del Conte needs to put some muscle lean on B-12 officiating. Clean that sh- - up and the penalty situation improves overnight.

And here is an old thread, emphasizing the penalties and lack of discipline...and now it has come to light, with sports media, and fanbase. Just thought I would move back up to restudy this set of plaguing problems.

Penalties are important, but they're a lagging indicator of not being a very good team.

OL's hold when they're being beaten so bad it looks like they have cement blocks tied to their feet. DB"s hold when they're about to give up a pass. Players commit stupid personal fouls when they are frustrated about the way the game is being played.

And not to be too critical of these predictions from the past (it's hard to make predictions, especially about the future - Yogi Bera), there's some gold in them thar hills:
    Uhhh, maybe not!

Texas did manage to score a TD with one second left against Baylor, to cut the loss from 3 TD's down to 2, so there was that, en route to a 5 loss season and an Alamo Bowl.

Yet TCU, Iowa State, and Baylor managed to go Insane in the Membrane, Insane in the Brain!!! and beat Texas. I guess that's why they play the game.

Don't mean to rag too much on you two, the program looked like it was going places after the Sugar Bowl win. Shows how bad things have been since then. The team is 10-7 since the Sugar bowl, going 0-4 against OU and TCU.
