Any chance Sam comes back for next year?

I'm pretty sure this year does not count against the 4 year eligibility rule, as an incentive for players to play this year.

So I would think Sam could come back for another year if he wanted to. Anyone think he would?

I suppose it would depend on a couple of things - if Texas wins the B12, then maybe he'd consider that the point to go out on. And what type, if any, of interest there is for him in the NFL. His accuracy since the OU game has not been good - I've heard reports that he's banged up so that might factor in. Would another year improve his NFL prospects, or just lead to further wear and tear?

    Discuss.

Dale Evans needs to strike up Happy Trails To You when it comes to Sam coming back for another season. We appreciate his time on the 40 acres, but it’s time to move on.

Sam is going to come back no matter what, even if we lose all of our games.

He's the most loyal longhorn we've ever had in our program. He knows his NFL future is limited, so he is going to stay as long as he can.

If Sam wants to come back as fourth string I would have no problem with that. The young bucks need to their feet wet and see what they can do.

Personally, I think we've got some losing seasons ahead of us due to losing top recruits to other teams. Even if we find a good QB we'll have 50-50 seasons. I see Meyer as our only hope (though there could be someone else) if we are to progress quickly.
If Herman stays then it will be mediocrity.

Hoping Sam moves on. He is a class act and the ultimate longhorn but if he stays, we lose QB's in the line and could easily be back to case mccoy years. Sam is a tremendous competitor but with our OL he runs for his life way too much!! Take a bow and move on.

Mixed feelings about him coming back. This year has not helped his NFL stock except in the ‘gives it his all’ category.
I should think he would do best in a mentor category, ie, play some but mainly be in a supportive role and I imagine that would be tough on ones ego. If anyone could handle it Sam could, but he has shown a lot more maturity than I had at that age. Who am I kidding, more than I do today. Hookem Sam.

I imagine he comes back. For whatever reason he has just not had a very good year. I think it’s likely due to several small injuries but his draft stock is probably not going to be very high at the end of the season. From his perspective it probably makes all the sense in the world to come back next year. If the younguns can beat him out in the spring let them pass him. If not I will never complain about having a fifth year starter as a quarterback

I’m a little surprised by some of these responses. Who wouldn’t want to have a fifth year senior with Sam’s dedication to this team? What I would really like to see is him come back with a new head coach & see if his development improves.

for those wanting to see other quarterbacks on our roster get a chance, this scenario probably plays well there too. Maybe if our guys aren’t being told how hard winning is, we will start putting away middle of the road teams instead of turning every game into a 4 quarter slugfest & our backups can actually get some reps :idk:

Sam's a gamer, life-long Longhorn, stands for The Eyes, leaves it all on the field. He wants to stay, let someone beat him out but remember this year doesn't count towards eligibility so no one is losing a year/anything. It's like fricking WWII.....

The decision to extend eligibility due to Covid will IMO create a logjam for incoming players. That’s the unintended consequence. The good players; the good QBs will not be willing to wait what could be an extra year.

It will be interesting to watch. It may elevate some of the second tier programs who could benefit by having either some excellent recruits or some upper class transfers fall into their laps.

Exactly duke, if they do not increase the scholarships. It will be ugly. If they increase them only the wealthy will benefit and benefit mightily. Actually the wealthy benefit with either.

Part of the struggle may be to essentially all new receivers. Sam was pretty good when we had both Duv and CJ at the same time. That's a lot of experience to give up. If he were to comer back for another year he may improve his draft status. Also putting in a new offense during covid's gotta be hard.

This offense looks exactly like last year's offense to me. I think Sam should, and will, move on.

Sam’s decision will likely rest on Herman. If Herman is back, Sam will come back because without his leadership this year, we wouldn’t have fielded a team.

if Meyer is here, the decision will be his, but unlike Herman, Meyer has common sense and will consult a bunch with Sam knowing he is the leader and the glue.

Theater said, the kid from Duncanville is more Meyer’s type of QB

I may be in the minority, but I hope he does come back. Thompson hasn't impressed me and even if Card is the 2nd coming of Colt, I see no way for him the be what a 5th yr. Sr Sam will be.

Do you guys think Sam will get a spot in the NFL?
I would think his leaving or staying would depend heavily on the answer to this question. I worry that his inaccuracy this year (for whatever the reason) diminishes his chances at the NFL.

While I don’t see a huge future for Sam in the NFL, the Cowboys should draft him on durability alone, since that seems to be a huge problem in Arlington.

I hope Sam returns next year and believe he will. Texas ranks 2nd in the conference statistically in offense (prior to playing KU) and it has nothing to do with our O-Line or WRs. His accuracy has been off this year, but I would welcome his grit, determination and experience in 2021. :hookem:

I didn’t realize that magic mushrooms were legal in Texas I thought it was just Oregon.

Are you folks out of your mind? Sam is “Texas” for multiple reasons I would love to see him come back... first of all he’s left it all on the field and if he can come back to a better team next year then hell yes he needs to come back.

This smells to me the usual University of Texas “the 2nd quarterback is always the better QB.”

Here’s a scenario for you let’s say Sam enters the portal and transfers how many D1 teams do you think would pick them up at a heartbeat.

Sam and Herman both need to leave.
He can't throw consistently .... Not just a throw here or there. He is consistently off target. Every now and then he will drop a dime, but its few and far between. No way will he get drafted..Not this year not ever. The type of offense and having a few really solid WRs has allowed him to have great stats. That won't cut it in the NFL. There are too many QBs out there who can throw dimes. Love Sam's attitude and heart, but he will have to be a TE or something to play in the NFL.

It's my limited understanding of what makes NFL quarterbacks a hot commodity, is their ability to throw fast and accurately, while having good size to see over the 6' 7" apes on the DL.

NFL defenses are so good, and so quick, you have a small window to throw into, and the ball as to get their quickly or the defense can close on it and make a play.

All the stuff that fans of a QB talk about - toughness, leadership, confidence, being a winner - they all sound great, and none of them are actually looked at during the draft. Height, ball speed, and accuracy are what gets you drafted.

So Sam's poor accuracy since the Tech game is going to hurt him, unless it's just related to an injury he can heal up from in time for the draft, and has a good showing in various workouts.

Hard to argue with that. Sadly, not many coaches as truly creative as Sean Payton.
