Defense is better? Okie Lite puts up 530 total yds (400 in the air)? Texas does 280+? Just how long ago was that? Am I missing something here?

I would love a win, but I can’t get my hopes up. And to win out and get destroyed by OU on national television would be the worst thing that could happen. Unlike Texas, OU has become much better through solid development on “D” and they are now an horrific scoring machine. Texas continues to struggle in every game with a boring, predictable offense with bad game day play selection. (There is a reason offensive superstars are not beating Tom’s door down.)
    Sorry. Wish it wasn’t so!

You said exactly what I see chin. Our offense just doesn’t look innovating, heck often it isn’t even interesting. I watch so many more teams every Sat and cannot understand why other teams get wide open receivers and ours rarely have any space. Troubles me mightily for Fri.

^^You are probably not missing anything.

I think some of us cockeyed optimists on the thread look at the WVU game where our D held them to 43 net rushing yards, thus making wvu one dimensional. And being somewhat cockeyed, we see hope eternal even in small successes.

Hoping against hope that the D will repeat their wvu performance Friday.

Those open receivers are partly due to speed we dont have and partly due to scheme. If you run all receivers to the "same area' so the QB doesnt have to adjust, you also put all the defenders in the same are. I have posted this before, we have no single reciever that defenses fear or adjust for. Perhaps Omeire was going to change that but got season ending surgery. You need speed, space and the QB to hit them in stride. Not sure we can offer a consistent answer to any of those 3.

I see an OT game. Texas has to war to come back and get it to OT.
    Texas. 37
    ISU. 30 OT

If Sam is healthy, he can lead Texas in a come back.

With all due respect, as much ad we love Sam, he misses open receivers with the deep ball more than he hits them.

Just seems like ISU is on a roll, and this is a bigger game for them than for us. Of course, it’s a huge game for Mensa Boy.

ISU can validate their legitimacy with a win, or confirm that they’re not ready to be considered in the upper echelon of the conference with a loss.

honestly I'd rather play ISU this week than KSU. Nobody wants to play a team like KSU that can be decent after a stomping like that. Hoping ISU reads their press clippings all week and loses the big one on Friday. Or should I say TikTok clips

Well if it goes into that many overtimes, you can't win by 3, since starting in 5OT the entirety of the overtime possession is a single attempt at a 2-point conversion.

Although I guess we could be tied 69-69, go first, and convert, leaving us ahead 71-69. Then Iowa State somehow loses 98 yards, and we score a safety. Worth 1 point, since it's a conversion attempt.

I've already made my prediction....but just a couple quick things on the game:
    1. ISU has nations leading rusher in Breece Hall. I view this both intimidating and yet positively as Herman teams in general and including this year at UT have been pretty successful in my view keying on individual backs, without sacrificing too much on the backend...and will hurt you if you like/need to lean on them too much (Purdy may need a real good day for isu)

    2. As mentioned before ...Senior day. You can bet Cosmi, Kerstetter, Sam, and Taquan, etc will be keyed up in this game

    3. Key will be secondary play for us(limiting "easy" ones especially)
    How effective we run
    Picking up blitz schemes
Sam being cool in pocket and accurate with throws. +Sam running effectively will help keep good OSU linebackers (one really good one) from getting too locked in
Oh....And I want to say we cannot start slow...but I can't because we have proven we can win with poor or inconsistent starts...I'll say it anyway...We need to start faster.
Also, probably best not to jump offsides if the other team is lined up to try any potential game-winning field goal.

Sam is a great guy, but he is the problem on offense. This system requires a QB who is accurate at least 90% of the time. Sam barely hits 50%. ( not talking completion % here...talking putting the ball were it SHOULD be put. )
Look at OSU. Their QB ( both of them actually ) was horrible vs OU....Couldn't do squat.
Look at Tulsa vs Tulane...Their starter goes down and their 2nd string guy sucked ***, and they were going to lose that game...UNTIL.. that guy got hurt...Enters their 3rd string guy, and he was lights out good. Lead them to a comeback. Its all about the QB making plays, and Sam just can't throw a great ball often enough....
With that said...the coaches do not help him much. like sending WRs on routes forcing them to look back into a blinding sun, etc....Terrible vanilla running game that doesn't force safeties and LBs to play honest. Throw in them trying to make Sam a pocket passer......ALL those things create quicksand the offense can't dig out of.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

And to that point and for example, why no calling for fast developing pass routes, short crossing routes, etc. on 3rd down when we need short to medium yardage to keep the drive alive?

No, the OC calls slow developing, intermediate to long pass routes that force Sam to stay in the pocket and throw longer passes to get the first down! Sam also has a tendency to force the ball into coverage when he should not.

This, WITH OC full knowledge Sam has had hurt ribs / shoulder, struggles with accuracy in general - especially his accuracy on long throws.

What about their other 13 losses to Oklahoma? The problem isn't Sanders.

This is just searching for something, anything, to criticize. We do the opposite and it's "Well the opposing DBs don't even have to guard half the field because we're too scared to throw into the sun".

Now this I mostly agree with. Our passing routes don't seem to play to Sam's strengths, or our WRs strengths.

That said to some degree I'd want slower-developing pass routes. When we go deep it seems to usually just be throwing it up and figuring if we get a half step on the DB and the ball is in the neighborhood, we can go up and get it. Uh, if we had Roy and Sloan maybe, or Jordan and Quan, or Devin and Collin. But we don't.

Sam can move around and get us enough time to run double-moves. I'd rather that than what we tend to do now, which is essentially just throwing it up for grabs and hoping we can beat the guy for a 50/50 ball.

Seems to me like Sam's best throws are medium across the middle. He is great when he plants his back leg and gets forward-facing momentum and unwinds while looking vertical into the middle of the field. He seems to struggle toggling to either side without his back leg centered stright behind the direction he is oriented. Pretty typical at this level, but I think it may be exaggerated with Sam and even more so when he has seemed to be ailing. His throws left at all distances and all deep throws have been off, which I believe would indicate some right leg and/or that lower right side of the body...back, hips, lower ribs etc issues. We should get a good indication how much was injury and how much is Sam Friday...he's had time to rest/recover if that was the issue.
I basically think he isn't the best pure passer other than those across the middle but is better than what he has shown the last few weeks. The guy's still a baller for real tho and I expect "good Sam" Friday.

I keep reading all these posts about how much Sam sucks, yet everyone thinks he should go pro. If he's as bad as the comments here he won't even make and NFL practice squad, at least not at QB, but maybe LB.

It would seem stupid to me to go pro when you can stay in school and get a Masters Degree for free.

Speaking of Sam, I would contend that his performance YTD would grade out at about a “B.”

    2020 SEASON STATS

    YDS 1,834, 18th

    TD 22, Tied-6th

    INT 5, Tied-83rd

    QBR 75.4, 29th

The O-line has been average, the running game anemic (until the emergence of Bijan in the WV game), and the receivers have been mediocre at best. Huge drop off from CJ & Deven in 2019.

I also wonder if Yurcich’s play-calling has optimized Sam’s skill set. I think not.

Could the offense break out starting Friday? It could happen with a healthier Sam and an emerging RB...but I’ll believe it when I see it.

Our D is dead last in the Big 12 and our Offense is number 2 in the Big 12. So there is that.
Bottom line though is that every game will be played close from TCU to Notre Dame, which says our biggest problems are mental or motivation.
I suspect it is a function of being too much of a players coach.

Defense is much better than several weeks ago!

Offense is definitely inconsistent. Is it the system they try to run?
I would love to see Horns line up to give space (6-7 yds) to running backs to allow them to ram it into secondary towards goal line instead of what they are doing presently. They have very little chance of hitting it big in present formations!

Well one reason Sam may ‘force’ the throw is there is rarely any open space between defender and receiver. It amazes me how our guys just cannot get open, of course when they do break away on the deep ball I’m always holding my breath that Sam can hit them.

Thanks for the clarification. It has happened before. KSU vs Oregon and the announcer said it also happened in a Texas-A&M game in or around 2003. I remember seeing it somewhere, although I remember a lot of things that may or my not ever have happened.
