Define "years end" -

Calendar year?
School Year?

 

Season’s end 2021. Can’t picture Herman winning the B12 with the experience level coming back next year, and also can’t picture him surviving another non-title year.

 

Winning the conference next year...? It would depend on these factors:

1. Fantastic play by our excellent RBs
2. At least decent/average blocking
3. Yurcich pulling a rabbit out of his hat
4. One of the QBs developing into at least a serviceable Big 12 QB, it probably will take more than just a serviceable QB.
5. Collins and the other guys up front on D rushing the passer consistently
6. OU having an off day or two, or at least not getting real good again

The conference still looks pretty weak. If Campbell leaves ISU, don't expect them to be so good any more.

 

Sam has a big enough arm. He holds the ball too long or if not overthrows the deep ball too much. But give him 2-3 years in the league working on his game and he might surprise a lot of people. I'd take him on my team as a 3rd stringer to see if he could progress if I were an NFL GM.

 

I hope that I am wrong, but I don't believe that Sam will be drafted at all. Love him, but he's not NFL caliber.

 

See the team disintegrating? Another year with TH only delays the restoration of Texas football. No reason at all to keep him.

 

OU had 2 off days this year. Mattered little. Doubt it will matter again. No matter what they find a way.

Very true, but I still feel a whole lot better about next year now than I did before the 2nd half last night.

 

It’s hard to argue the accuracy of the first two touchdown passes and the ability to get the ball downfield quickly and close enough on the bomb. Casey looked real good.

 

It's a real college game, against a live opponent trying to sack him on every play. It's not "garbage time", and he's throwing passes, instead of mostly just handing it off. He looks good. Card doesn't look too shabby either. I like plenty of QB depth (and I hope we recruit more QBs), but, after watching Casey torch CU, I'm feeling much better about our QB situation next year.

 

It was just one game and we all need to temper our enthusiasm but sometimes you can tell whether a QB has it or not and Casey showed he has it. Now that is not a guarantee that he will be successful or that he will go out and be the second coming of Colt McCoy it just means we have a QB who has the skills, ability and "it" to potentially step up. I never felt that way about Swoopes or Heard, even after the Cal game because Heard did what he did with his feet not his arm while Thompson showed he has a gun and for one night at least with the exception of one throw, really good accuracy. That throw to Brewer last night on third down was NFL worthy. Again that doesn't mean he will be playing on Sundays but it means he could and that is what I am excited about. Add in Bijan and Roschon along with Omeire, Moore, Smith, and Whittington and this Texas offense has some weapons for next season.

 

This is true.....but you also have to look at a few specific things he did last night and make the best evaluation possible. I've been talking him up for a year (he looked the way I thought he would with a full half to play and knowing he is the guy there)...still not going nuts over his performance last night. ..But he did some some specific things that elite college QBs only can do and, more importantly, a few things we have sorely been lacking. I agree there are many variables, unknowns, and factors present and future that can produce a better or worse assessment of and ultimate reality for a guy who just came into a bowl game and played a great half.

 

And we dont know yet but for what its worth I thought it looked like Sam's injury occurred while being held up behind line and whistle blowing as Buffalo defenders...one in particular...w a little rough extracurricular trying to rip ball out.

 

After the first two drives, Sam couldn't put us in the end zone at all.....Thompson comes in cold and leads us to 4 freaking touchdowns and sets a TD pass record..Enough said ...Sam has been holding us back. Yes its one game against a team that isn't great, but it is the same team that after the first two TDs Sam couldn't get it done. I just wonder what could have been had Herman had the same balls Riley had to switch QBs in games where Sam was sucking.........We will never know because Herman doesn't have the sense to do something like that.

 

While Casey may not be the second coming of Vince Young or Colt McCoy, he demonstrated in a live game, against a bowl-worthy opponent,* in a pressure situation, that he can pass accurately, throw the short and deep ball, scramble, run, and read coverage. It is evident that he has the tools--both physical and mental--to be a good QB at this level. He just needs experience.


*not that "bowl worthy" means that much anymore...

 

We actually didn't need a good QB to put us in the endzone if TH would feed #5 for about 25 carries. Casey's big plays made everyone forget that Tom wouldn't feed the best player on the offense.

 

Casey has all spring and fall practice to develop further while practicing as #1 or #2 on depth chart. He is in great position to be ready for 2021 season. He will be more than adequate. Also he’s not coming off a redshirt freshman season like we are used to. When people think of new qb’s, they think of green players. Casey is not green.

 

Six things got my attention w CT last night...
1. The play where he stepped up to his right and came face to face with a free rusher, made a little stutter step and threw the defender off balance, steps back over and into the tiny remaining pocket, then throws a 25 yard pass over two defenders to his right while on balance with perfect touch
2. The perfect deep ball out to left for a TD with pocket collapsing and a defender crashing into him
3. The quickness and how much less time defense had to collapse on plays due to it
4. His 22 yard scramble up the right hash and how quickly he decided and got there
5. Decisiveness and confidence
6. Players seem to really like him

 

And Zero injuries at all positions....

I was really happy for Casey and he looked great. He looks like a starter.

Still I feel much better watching that one quarter, the way he carried himself was really impressive

 

Players didn't get down like players usually get when the starter gets hurt. These guys seemed to get a pep in their step and ecited when Thompson took the field. Not that they don't like Sam, but I think there is some negative feelings among the team due to Sam's preferential treatment. ...ie...Why did Sam's mom get the airtime speech ? Why didn't other Senior moms get airtime ???? Why did Sam get every single snap in nearly every game no matter how bad he was playing ???? You don't see other players playing like crap and still staying in the game ( and there were several games over the last 4 years that he was stinking it up ). There is also the possibility that 'The Eyes' issue comes into play with it all....There is just something amiss.

 

Again, if he had gone in the game and looked bad or even mediocre, I can't begin to imagine the "We're doomed" rants we would seeing and hearing. The young man had his number called and he stepped up and delivered. He had poise, showed leadership, had command of the plays, he showed some serious accuracy and zip, and the team had his back. Can we please just enjoy his performance and then see if continues to deliver next year?

 

You are making too big a deal out of Sam's mother coming on TV. You are the only one doing that. I for one liked that.
I do agree with you that the backup should have been put in when Sam was stinking up the joint, injuries or not, especially when they knew already that Thompson was a good player.

 

And the winner of this year's Randy McEachern Award is?

 

Oh it mattered. 1 loss they had a good chance to make the playoffs again.

 

CT started the half, not just a qtr and I think the offense was pretty effective to start. Not sure what happened after that but I am certain it wasn’t animosity towards Sam. That’s just silly.

 

Sure, but he had serious zip on the ball. Threw with accuracy. You can't expect him to have 4 TD quarters again. But this was no fluke. You could see the poise and arm strength.
