The Texas job requires a unique skill set that extends well beyond the field, as we have seen with the current guy who has failed that part of the job to an extent never imagined. Of course, Mack was the master in this regard.

Patterson is an excellent coach, but not a fit. Same for Gundy IMHO. Neither would be a bad choice, just not the right choice for Texas.

Is there an obvious or even subtle downside with Campbell? To be clear, I’m not saying that he is the next coming...but who knows?

The primary concern I have heard so far is the argument that the Texas job is too big and too political for him. I don’t buy it. He’s very likable, a class act, and he would grow on people. Of course, I have no idea if he’s interested. SH alluded to Michigan as being his next landing spot. I hope not, unless Meyer is hired. But long term, I still like someone young and classy like Campbell.

So their fifth (or more?) pick says yes. Gotta give it to them for persistence. Probably better than Steele for HC at AU, but we’ll see. Auburn has fielded a pedestrian offense for seemingly forever. If nothing else, Harsin should help them in that department.

Boise would be a great spot for Tom.

Are you suggesting that “just a few” Tiger fans might have a problem with it if he were?

The issue isn't coaching ability; it is everything else involved with the Texas job. It is a $25 million plus mistake if he turns out to be in the Charlie Strong and Tom Herman coaching tree.

Is that more than two million?

VH, as I think most of us agree, while there is no 100% sure bet, Meyer would be very close.

We can’t hang with Herman so when he is terminated (not if), that payout is set and there’s no avoiding it unless we get very lucky and he is hired by someone else (before being fired) thus mitigating the exposure.

Point being, we’re stuck with the financial burden. And if it isn’t Meyer, there will be uncertainty and angst.

Another Strong? Unlikely. Another Herman? Not with someone the caliber of Campbell. Given that reality, I like Campbell. I’m just not sure he likes us.

I’m sure Auburn fans will be just as divided as we would be for anybody but Urban.

Auburn fans must be really crazy. After all, their blood enemy, Bama, has dominated college football for the last decade.

Campbell is a good coach, but I am not sure a $55 million ($25 million by-out plus $6 million for $5 years) coach.

Well it may not matter if he is a 55 million dollar coach because we got to get rid of Herman.

    Campbell

Briles would have to admit to his past transgrissions (which he cannot afford to do). Plus he will never agree to the legal oversight that would come along with his hire.

He needs to go to the $EC or the NFL as a coordinator.

I think people forget that Mack was not the heir apparent when we started that search.

Also like Mack, Campbell has built a program from the foundation up. North Carolina and Iowa State there was no tradition of football, No brand, low expectations Before them.

I agree with posters. Hate to say it but the Texas coach is as much about being a good administrator as anything.
it’s a massive ship to steer but if you can surround yourself with the right people and “get all the BBs in the box” you can do it.

I think Campbell has it as far as being the administrator/ politiker. Don’t know much about his coaching tree but if I’m a top notch coordinator and I hit a call from this guy to come play at Texas I’m there in a heartbeat

Matt Campbell does nothing for me. I still believe Iowa State is extremely over-rated. Unless we can land a Top 3 Coach (Meyer, Dabo, ?) we simply have to let Herman's contract expire. It's the only way to get out of this financial death spiral. All these other coaching hires (Harsin, etc.) are simply Herman in different clothes.

I think how the media describes this sort of behavior depends purely on who did it
If this was Herman, it would be immature, childish, diva-like
With Campbell, it was “passion” and “fighting for his players”
They pretty much cover politics the same way

Screw all these re-treads and so called up and comers from the college level....These guys aren't big time winners... Look at Cincy vs Tulsa, That coach barely beat Tulsa. Campbell can't beat OU. Gundy falls short all the time, none of them dominate.... you have three or four guys who are winners..Saban, Day, Dabo, Riley ( at the conference level) ... Texas should take a huge chance with very little financial risk ( Get him cheap and pile on incentives ...). GO GET CARTHAGE'S HEAD COACH....That guy knows football and would surely be a hit with Texas High School coaches. As far as administrative stuff...Hell, I'd rather have a guy learn on the job in that department than someone like Herman; who has to learn the Xs and Os and game management on the job. .One of the greatest coaches UT ever had came straight from the high school ranks. Cliff Gustafson....People, Please understand football is football....You win games with Jimmys and Joes. You win championships with Xs and Os. The Carthage HC is one badass MOFO.

Conservatively speaking there's a -5000% chance we hire the guy. Total waste of keystrokes.

Don't know why Campbell is still being mentioned. From what I read he said he's not interested in Texas job. A midwest guy waiting for a B1G offer?

Auburn was getting desperate - "Auburn reached out Tuesday to Liberty coach Hugh Freeze about its head coaching job, a source familiar with the discussion tells 247Sports."

I don't see how any Horn fan would condone having Briles step foot on UT campus. There's obviously still things that happened in Waco they don't want public. Courts ordered the Pepper Hamilton report to be made public and BU/PH still won't do it.
