Owens had phenomenal testing numbers - top shelf athlete

Maybe Sark could talk with him one on one (if he hasn’t already). As much as I love BJ Foster’s bone-jarring hits, we need guys with the sort of speed and coverage skills that Owens brings to the table for our hybrid big safety/small LB player.

I remember watching the TCU game two years ago when Owens was a true Freshman, and thinking: ‘who is that linebacker #44 running step and step with TCU’s wideouts?’

What I read suggested he will wait at least until a new CB coach is named and wait to hear him out

    This^^^^^
    Thar is what I recall.
The first time I recognized him was actually a play he got beat on...just barely.
I was looking at his size and saying a dude that big shouldn't even be able to stay near a wideout down the field...but he was right on him even after a late jump.
I say they try him at some hybrid SS/LB role ... and get him blitzing occassionally, to boot

We will basically have a top 10 or 12 rank class for 2021 when all is said and done. Not bad for a “down” year.

Sorry to see you go Jalen, I’m thinking it’s a mistake but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Green... thought I saw info indicating he was still considering his plan to go or stay!

I wish him luck....but I'm afraid for many of these guys it is the inability to understand "what you gotta do" that is holding them back. Who knows what is behind the scenes that we fans don't know...but for Green, KI26 (maybe I can somewhat see this one), Big Willie, and all the guys I can't recall leaving right now...it is real hard to see from my admittedly limited perspective how, no matter what has transpired to this point, this new regime wouldn't be viewed as a fresh reset opportunity and a clean slate waiting for you to write on.
Same goes for not just transfers but some of those jumping to NFL prematurely...

Very good take Rain. I think a lot of times we as humans run from a situation more often than we run to a situation.

Going through the wayback machine to see if leaving Texas actually worked out well for certain people...

The only guys I can recall the past 10 years or so who actually made playing time waves at Power-5 schools after leaving us in this fashion were Cayleb Jones and Darius James. Derick Roberson was epic at Sam State, and probably had the best career numbers of someone who transfered, but that's FCS.

2010: Darius White had 1 good year at Mizzou. I think Darius Terrell switched to H-back at UNT and made all conference for CUSA.

2012: Adrian Colbert got enough PT in Miami to turn it into a draft pick and a decently-long NFL career. Dalton Santos had an excellent year at La Tech and I think went immediately into grad school to coach.

2014: John Bonney was a GT for Tech and immediately started for them.

2015: Kai Locksley was a part-time starter at UTEP when he wasn't hurt. Ryan Newsome played a lot at Arizona State but never made a huge impact.

2016: Jordan Elliott had a really good career at Mizzou, and I was sad to see him go. It's weird calling Buechele a transfer, but he sort of is. Good career at SMU. Kyle Porter had some decent years at UH.

2017: Pouncey ended up at UF after badmouthing them to recruits, mostly because of his brother, but I don't think he played much there.

2018: Cam Rising is the only notable DI transfer, but hasn't done anything at Utah.

2019: Kenyatta Watson looked good in our limited time with him, but is now at GT and wanted to be closer to home. It looks like Javonne Shepherd might end up at A&M.

2020: JQJ is the only notable one, but the jury's out on when he'll be able to compete.

So, over the past decade, we've had maybe 15-20 guys who still got decent playing time elsewhere, compared to the 50+ who left the program and didn't do jack ****.

There are obviously a lot of factors in the works other than playing time. It could be grades, not feeling that UT is the right fit, girlfriends, parental pressure, or whatever. But I can't imagine any 4-or-5-star recruit thinking that transferring is his way to bigger and better things, looking at the track records of everyone else on this list. Unless you're Kyler Murray or Jalen Hurts, there's no doubt in my mind that guys like Jalen Green just aren't going to amount to much elsewhere if they couldn't hack it at Texas.

Man...so hard to keep up these days.
I miss the days...in all sports...where your team was your team and when you were a fan you knew who would be suiting up each year. Hard to keep up

It's a sad state of affairs when the football program hits the same level as the basketball program in terms of creating an environment for "get me the hell outta here as quickly as possible so I can go pro." Yes, the basketball team is much better this year, but it sure seems like for every Myles Turner and Jaxson Hayes, we have a Sam Cosmi or Chris Warren to match.

Mack was correct back in 2011-13 about how we can no longer rely on depth charts to recruit. It used to be "we have 5 scholarship RBs and 2 of them are leaving, so let's recruit 2." Now it's more of a crapshoot and you never know when a kid will just be done with you. It's also a huge predictor of success in the trenches, where we can't seem to keep an OL together. Anyone with eyes could tell that our OL rebuild from 2003-04 was going to reap dividends. We haven't been that secure about it since, because of the way that kids see their situation and can pack up and call it a day at any moment.

Not sure but seems he has grade issues cause aggys were complaining that's why he went juco route vs. going straight there.

Mike Roach on Gideon and the satefies, with a mention of Tyler Owens (but it really doesn't say anything you haven't already read here, which is kind of typical) --

"...I'm told by sources that Blake Gideon made a good first impression with the safety room. It's a crowded room with a lot of talent, and Gideon has the unique perspective of sitting in that room for that university as a player with skins on the wall. It doesn't hurt that Gideon is closer to his players in age. I was told there was a renewed sense of energy in that room as another fresh start comes for them. More than anyone, the safety position underwent significant changes in philosophy the past few years. There are some big, athletic bodies with the chance to start over in Tyler Owens and BJ Foster while young guns like Jerrin Thompson and JD Coffey are ready to step up. This is a position I'll be watching closely to see if Gideon and Pete Kwiatkowski can get the most out of a weapon like Owens and a dynamic prospect like Foster. Owens in particular seems to be at a crossroads. While Craig Naivar was a huge fan of his potential, Chris Ash's staff didn't believe he could be a factor on defense for Texas. Owens flirted with the portal multiple times, and this spring could be make or break for him."

At least 4 starters, including their 2 leading tacklers. Also an OL and RB.
You would think the Alabama coaches knew them

Whether I agree or not I do generally understand portalling...
...But a few of these and the timing... just can't really make sense of it.
And I am becoming increasingly concerned about oline depth.
All the scheme and talent in the world wont take you very far without two strong lines ...and our oline just isn't deep and competitive enough IMHO
