2/13 Basketball is a Winter game. Today we take on the TCU Horned Frogs in Austin. It's a good thing it's not in Ft Worth today, as there might be some weather issues up there...? The Frogs are a different sort of team than most of what we've encountered in-Conference. TCU has a good inside game, hits the boards hard, and gets lots of garbage points. Their top 2 scorers are guards Nembhard and Miles, but big center Kevin Samuel (6'11" 255lbs, from Antigua & Barbuda) is putting up 9.4 ppg and pulling down 8.8 rpg--not far from averaging a double-double. While forwards O'Bannon and LeDee also make their presence known inside, Samuel is the Boss Frog down low, and if we can get him in foul trouble it will change the game. Kevin Samuel will be the closest thing to WV's Derek Culver (and some of those Baylor interior guys) that we'll see in conference play. The Frogs seem to hang around, and not go away, then somehow they pull off the W at the end. The best comparison would be West Virginia without McBride. They have recently defeated Oklahoma State, a team we recently lost to (in a fluke and despite Shaka's excellent coaching). They also beat the aggies (kudos Frogs ). Fortunately, TCU's guard D is rather pedestrian. So this is as good a time as any for our shooting to really catch fire again. Sims may be a key to this game, in that he (along with Kai and Brown) will need to equal or beat the Frogs big men on the boards and keep Kevin Samuel from running wild all over us inside. Sooooooooo: Sims, Kai, and Brown play tough inside, we hit our free throws, have good outside shooting against just a so-so outside D, and come away with the W. RJ Nembhard (G) 17.1 ppg, 4.6 reb Mike Miles (G) 14.8 ppg, 3.6 reb Kevin Samuel (C) 9.4 ppg, 8.8 reb -- 6'11" 255 lbs contain this guy/box him out/rough him up/get him in foul trouble Chuck O'Bannon (F) 7.1 ppg, 4.2 reb Jaedon LeDee (F) 5.7 ppg, 3.5 reb Kevin Samuel Texas vs TCU Prediction, College Basketball Game Preview Texas vs TCU: NCAA Basketball Betting Odds & Trends | 2/13/2021 TCU vs. Texas Prediction, Preview, and Odds - 2-13-2021 Texas Longhorns vs TCU Horned Frogs Prediction & Match Preview This doofus thinks we're in the Big 10
Sims 6 pts 4 reb with 10:48 left in First Half. Getting a breather. Hepa in there now. Very few fouls by either team. Up by 3.
Kai with the 3! Kai guarding Samuel. Still up by 3. Kai is running down court fast, making big, big Samuel sprint. Good strat—tire Samuel out. Both teams are sloppy with passes. 11 combined turnovers already. Our guards are penetrating with ease. With great ease. Sims with a block and now a rebound. Jericho is playing well today. And Kai with a dunk!!! Up by 7.
Brown to the line. Let’s hit those free throws. 1 down! Got em both! good job! Up by 9. Now Brown with the 3! Neither team in the bonus. Refs fairly hands off.
We take an 8 point lead into the half. That’s good. Gotta keep some distance from TCU—they have a habit of hanging around to the end, and winning some tight games at the free throw line. Good play by Sims, Kai, and A Jones. Fix the sloppy passing and keep up the pressure. We got many points off our defense. Sims is playing with power and authority, and is winning the battle with Samuel. Aside from some sloppy passes, The Horns are looking like Da Horns again.
Opening of second half. We go straight to Sims inside. He draws the foul on Samuel. Coleman nails the 3! And a penetration under the bucket reverse layup. Coleman taking control. Now the cockaroches pass the ball to nowhere. TO. Texas ball! Now the Frogs are sneaking back into it. Inch by inch. Bucket by bucket. Narrowing the lead...
Nice! We forced a few turnovers and get buckets on fast breaks. A Jones and Coleman playing well. Lead back up to 6. A Jones with 17 pts. TCU is crashing down hard when we penetrate. Gotta kick it out and hit those outside shots. Often they are open. Gotta sink them. Right now, Defense is giving us the lead. Yeah! Another Frog pass to nowhere under our pressure.—that will drive a coach nuts.
Yeah! Brown with the slam dunk. Now Brown draws the foul by Samuel. UT 49 TCU 41 And Kai with the blocked shot.
Coleman with the steal and bucket. Coleman’s killing it out there today! Up by 8. time for a nice run to put these guys away.
D forces an air ball. Up by 10. Alley oop Sims. Up by 12!!!! Kai draws the O foul. This is the run!!! Put them away Horns!!! Under 6 minutes. Ramey drives. Bucket and foul. Put em away!!! Up by 15!!!
Slowing it down. Under three minutes. Up by 11. Manage the clock. Sims grabbing the board. Keep it up. Play smart Horns. This is the look of a well coached team. Bring it on home!
Coleman milks the clock to one second and hits the J. 13 point lead. One and a half minutes left. Good tactical decisions made by coach and team. Now Kai with the dunk! That’s the game folks.
Great performances: A Jones Sims—he DOMINATED Samuel Also noteworthy: Coleman Kai Jones Ramey—near the end in that late run to put it away Brown
Agree^^^. TCU is not chopped liver. Well coached and talented. A 15 point win is impressive. Hope it's the beginning of a long win streak!
Agree. ISU is the only automatic win in this conference. TCU is an above average team, that could push far in the NIT or maybe even crash the big dance with a late season run (combined with a downfall of OSU or someone else in conference).
Nice win. Hopefully, the team gained some of the confidence it lost and gets even with OU on Tuesday night. Sooners have been playing well, hopefully Texas will make them lose a little confidence. Did not see game, but some very impressive dunks in the highlights. Nice to see team attacking rim.
You nailed it ^^^. With the Horns offensive scheme—guard play emphasis, looking to shoot the three—confidence is critical. In a sense, as Coleman goes the Horns go. His assists, his made shots, his ball security, all influence the play of his teammates more than anyone on the team. He handles the ball more than anyone else and must secure it, distribute it correctly, to keep his mates involved and sharp—confident.
Nope, they are a very average team at best. The good wins on their schedule are beating OSU twice and that's about it.
