I compared him to Michael Jordan, a guy who just refused to lose no matter what he came up against. Of course that was Vince in college when the game was easy for him, when he got to the NFL and had to really work, things changed.

Agree Thomas is probably the best TE we've had when it comes to stats and on the field results. The position has never been a strong one at Texas, but we had a few prior to Mack I enjoyed watching and who had success - Kerry Cash, William Harris and Lawrence Sampleton come to mind.

Going way back, 1968 Superbowl NY Jets starting TE Pete Lammons.

Dave Thomas was the prototype TE that Gil Brandt & Tex Schramm built the Cowboys around. He was "the protector". Since you can no longer contact Steve (referee of CCG against CU) or Al in Poteau (2005 OU referee), but when alive, both would confirm to you that Dave Thomas was a leader, protector, and delivered messages to Gary Barnett & Bob Stoops that were received loud and clear. We have not seen that type leadership since the Saints drafted him.

As someone who has seen almost every game since 1965, it is my arrogant opinion that Dave Thomas is the best TE at Texas since Pete Lammons, although Sampleton was more talented.

The kid from Diboll may have been the most talented, but again, he wasn't an enforcer, nor has anyone else been since Dave Thomas.

We made the cut of 6 for S Ish Harris of Pilot Point. He is being recruited as an " athlete" . He is a Lil'Jordan swiss army knife type of player.

DON'T forget Bobby Micho..an Austin kid. He wasn't the awesome specimen and NFL prospect that Sampleton was, but for my money he was a better NCAA player.

For me you could say he is a better passer than Vince, but nobody is 10x the passer Vince Young was in college (he was the 3rd pick in the draft for a reason). I appreciate the hyperbole, but not at the expense of possibly the greatest QB to ever play at UT. Remember this game with several perfect passes? 05 Texas-OU - YouTube

Someone brought up Diron Talbert on a thread yesterday. If I'm not mistaken, Talbert and Lammons were here at the same time. It would be hard to figure out which one was the most nasty and mean.

People may forget that Thomas had virtually a perfect performance in the USC NC game. Had 8 or 10 catches, and got every inch that he could after each catch. It was a TE performance for the ages, obviously overshadowed by another player who had a “decent night” as well.

Vince had the worst mechanics for any QB, but he over shadowed it with his leadership and Moxy. Greg Davis tried to fix it but it only got worse, so they made the decision to let Vince be Vince. When he got to the NFL, he was equally as uncoachable there and it lead to him getting cut.

I went back recently and watched the 05 Oklahoma game and I have to admit, his passing was hard to watch.

Yes, I know he had a great completion percentage and I still cherish every moment he played at Texas, but he wasn't a good passer plain and simple.

Murphy has his issues as a passer as well, but his mechanics are pretty damn good for a high school kid, all he needs to do is shorten up his release and he would be right up there with Ewers as a passer.

On DT Jaray Bledsoe of Bremond...IT saying Coach Davis' recruiting pitch is being very well received by Bledsoe's mother, and at this time she would prefer that her son stays in-state for school.

That would set up an A&M vs. Texas battle.

    Jaray Bledsoe, Bremond, Defensive Tackle

When football becomes a beauty contest I might agree with you, but I will quit watching it. Until then, you can NEVER say someone is 10x the college passer Vince was as he could make all the throws. Are you going to bash Ricky next because he strides were too short or Earl because he would rather run you over instead of faking you out and going around you? This sport is called football not figure skating or gymnastics.

I will not respond further to someone bashing Vince in any manner again as it is just a waste of time to try and defend one of the greatest college QBs ever. His game and national championship do not need defended by me or anyone else. Sorry but you have angered me by suggesting one of the greatest Longhorn legends was not great at his craft.

I apologize if I offended you. I was just stating the obvious.

Ricky Williams had small hands and that caused him to fumble a lot. Oh and Earl did run around guys all the time. If you ever watched him in an Oilers uniform his go to move around the goal line is the start up the middle and break it outside for a TD.

Still love all these guys and cherish every moment they spent in the burnt orange.

I agree. Let’s get this page on recruiting only. The other postings are interesting, but let’s move it to One The Field.
