There was a cut and paste story in the chronicle yesterday. It was loaded with false narratives like “for years students have wanted the song terminated.” I will reiterate to the school today my continued withholding of any funds if The Eyes is terminated or changed. Belmont understands economics.

This rehashed story is all over the place yesterday and this morning....many outlets including CBS, USA Today, etc etc etc running w it.
More irresponsible "journalism" driven by out of control group think all fitting the mold that has been preordained.
People dont even know what racism is anymore...a great disservice has been done to any who do suffer at the hands of it. Reading the letters and emails, I myself do not see racism. Bringing up race when someone else has made race THE ultimate issue certainly doesn't make you racist. And telling people what you think about something they are doing you don't appreciate and stating what you are willing to do to support your view has nothing to do with race necessarily. The donors did exactly what the players did and are being called racist for it.
Having said this, I am sure that a very small % of donors may have crossed lines with comments....
If they did they should search their hearts and offer a sincere apology. But to paint this issue now as a mob of racist donors and use letters and emails they sent that clearly are not racist to support the notion and drive the narrative is more from the theater of the absurd we are forced to live with from journalists and spinsters who clearly attended school after they stopped really teaching anything useful and meaningful...including how to think critically.

Reading some of the articles out yesterday and some of the responses from UT faculty its hard not to come to the conclusion that there are some pretty freaking stupid professors holding down jobs at UT if they think that donors have no and should have no influence on the school. How are these people smart enough to get jobs at a major University without a basic understanding of the real world. The bubble around the 40 acres has never been as stark as it has in this debate.

That said, some of the emails from donors crossed a line and as noted in post directly above those folks need to take a look in the mirror. A few seem to have rushed to their worst instincts and that is a disservice to the public discourse and to the vast majority who support the song because it calls for the best in all of us.

This professor was really smart, too. But no real world clues. And, it is an accurate depiction of a snooty professor who doesn't like certain students and wields power to try to fail them.

Theres alot of "smart" people these days who don't know much about anything.
Since altering the meaning of words is so popular, I think we need to look at redefining what makes a person "smart".

Whoever is releasing these emails is a POS. This story should have gone to bed but like all of you, yesterday it was everywhere. Some people really are trying to take us back 50 years.

It also seemed to get new legs with the latest spouting off from Sterns...I think he is trying to get ahead of the status as an UFA destined for two practice squads and then obscurity.

Also humorous from another individual is the adaptation of the minstrel claims by now saying it appeared at 'minstrelsy shows.' It is almost as if they have to concede the Eyes were not sung in blackface but may possibly have been adjacent to a skit done in blackface...

Looks like one of the Texas Tribune type sites got the emails via open records and chose to run with the most salacious or cringe-worthy ones. And yes, there were a few that were cringe-worthy, but that does not reflect upon the entirety of the Texas base...

    From the Tribune article:

"Went through the [Eyes of Texas]-themed mail inbox again this morning," Gary Susswein, former chief communications officer, wrote to Hartzell and his deputy, Nancy Brazzil, in mid-October. "Nearly 100 percent support for the Eyes of Texas."

This is the real headline. White, black, poor, rich, athlete, etc, the support among alumni for the Eyes of Texas is nearly 100%. Why? Because it is not racist. It is also a cool, inclusive tradition. Our Cali/Northern admins would have loved to drop anything Texas related, but could not because the pushback was near unanimous.

A professor and a fringe with bad intentions, some misguided athletes and other students, and our idiot media are running with this. It is like they are mad they are not able to bend the 99% to their misguided, asinine will and they do not want to give up. All alumni have to do is continue to stand strong as we are dealing with a fringe with little support that will eventually give up and move on to the next asinine thing.

Also, Sark came out for the Eyes and has out recruited Herman so far.

lol journalism at its finest "chose to run with the most salacious or cringe-worthy ones"

Here's the hard thing...a few cringe-worthy ones really do create a mess. It's why we should always try to communicate appropriately. Being wise doesn't mean being forced to kowtow to the current climate. It's about understanding diplomacy in a complex situation.

And, if you truly want to make a threat (financially), don't do it in writing. lol This is what you email... "As a proponent and believer that The Eyes of Texas is a great school song, I will be withholding my donations until this situation is resolved appropriately." Everyone knows what this means. Emails should not be sent from the amygdala. lol

I don't believe for a second they only received 75 note from donors saying they would withhold support. I know seven myself.

I thought this was put to bed when the players started staying and “singing” the Eyes again, and Sark made his position known on it?

I think we should file this one under “sleeping dogs” and move on at this point.

(Parentheses used because most of the players only over stood there and mouthed the words anyway)

Hartzell called some of the emails 'hateful'. Quan Cosby said on The Horn today that some of the emails 'went too far'. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yappity, yappity, yap. They can talk that shiite all they want but, in the end, money talks and BS walks.

The players were first with the threats. The donors don't owe you their money. IMO its good y'all were reminded of that.

Yes- that is the Bob Rowling. He is as fine, generous and principled a man as anyone I know. He and his family have been extraordinarily generous to our university and is a wonderful example of how (I think) wealthy people should comport themselves and make the world a better place.

That someone who started bad, became good, left their previous ways, and then wrote a hymn?

The hymn is associated with his redeemed life because that's when he wrote it .

Regardles , I think the report will show that the EoT is not racist. We'll see that the accusations were not historically accurate for the most part, and we'll be able to move forward.

That's probably the point. 2003, I believe, is pointing out that cancelling out things from the past that may seem offensive to cry babies now, is stupid.

People who don’t think confound things. I bet that report will show all the facts were confounded to lead to the conclusion that the eyes is racist. Basically, they started with that, and worked their way backwards. It’s how false narratives are established. The amazing thing is how many people fell for it.

That's a good take on it. Yes, he reformed himself, but to the cancel culture, anything you did in your past makes you eligible for cancelation, no matter who you are now.

Likewise, all Dr. Suess books should be banned on the merit of him writing only 6 that are deemed racist.
