A few surprises, but mostly as I thought. Bank on this: every song ever performed at a minstrel show will now be deemed to be racist despite the fact that minstrel shows were popular for over 100 years in America and the origin of popular music in America. There is a direct line between minstrel shows and rap music. That is why this whole thing is phony.

On local radio they said the university will likely institute some sort of mandatory educational module to teach incoming freshmen the history of the song and how it progressed from 100+ years ago to what it has actually meant to the university for the last 90+ years.

Even though I know it won't happen, I hope it includes the recommended firing of the professor who just cost the university millions over a nothing burger and is still probably preaching the nonsense to anyone who will listen. I say millions because I'm convinced had Herman handled this issue correctly he would not have been fired.

Hopefully, along with learning about the origins of the EOT they will also have a module on the history of the founding fathers of The University of Texas and the original regents.

Unfortunately, learning and research takes effort. They just do what Twitter tells them to do.

There is no way EOT has racist intent. I've witnessed it being sung so many times. It is a bonding between the fans and the players over the love of the school; win or lose. That's all there is to it.

So far I have not seen proof Eyes was sung in black face.
I have seen it mentioned by baiters but no actual proof.
Nor have I seen proof it was sung at Minstrel showS.
Someone said and it has become fact.
Is there actual proof I have missed.

Once again the powers at be have caved to the students, band and athletes by not making them participate in the EOT. Most students love all of the traditions of UT and know dang well coming in what the University Of Texas is all about. If I were a donor, I would spend my money elsewhere! I would assume that alot of the donors will bail out due to the ruling! Ticket sales and season ticket holders will also probably decline again in 2021. Enough is Enough! There is so many kids that would love the chance to attend Texas and be more than willing to hold up the Hook Em and sing the EOT. Why don't they give up their scholarships to those who want to get a degree and participate instead of being woke. I would be the first to agree if the song indeed was racist, and it needed to be changed.

read it here: Eyes of Texas | Eyes of Texas

    Key Summary:
“The Eyes of Texas” Remains Our Alma Mater President Hartzell stated in July 2020 that “The Eyes of Texas” would remain UT’s alma mater, the UT System Board of Regents supported his decision, and the Eyes of Texas History Committee was created with the sole authority to research and understand the song’s history, as well as institutional and broader historical uses since its inception.

The History of the Song Reflects the History of America The history of “The Eyes of Texas” mirrors the history of the United States, Texas, The University of Texas at Austin as well as its band and sports teams. This complexity creates an opportunity for continued learning, sharing and understanding.

Facts and Historical Context Matter Research by the committee has uncovered important facts and historical context, some of which have never been systematically compiled and analyzed until now. Additionally, the research provides robust evidence about many elements of the song, several of which have been previously unsupported by fact. These facts add nuance and richness to the story of a song debuted in a racist setting, common for the time, but, the research shows, was intended to parody the famous phrases of the university president. The exclusion of Black students at that time presents an opportunity to think about how they and other communities of color have fought for inclusion and the work that remains to ensure all members of our community feel they belong.

Living Out the Meaning From its inception, “The Eyes of Texas” has always been a song about accountability. Therefore, the spirit and intention of the song compels the university to be transparent about its past and be ever more accountable to the state and its diverse people. In this sense, the work of the committee was a microcosm of what the university should stand for: research, getting to the facts, seeking to understand others’ viewpoints, continuing to learn, courageously confronting and acknowledging our history, and finding ways to strengthen our community going forward.

Having now read the report I have to admit I am pleasantly surprised at the level of detail and research. The stories about the song particularly some of the ones from WWII were pretty incredible. I don't think an intellectually honest person can read that report and come away saying that the song is racist or that what it means particularly today is in any way racist or supporting of racist beliefs. I am frankly shocked that the school did such a thorough and complete job of dispelling so many of the falsehoods that had been thrown out about the song.

It doesn't matter. The players don't have to sing it, the band doesn't have to play it. I guess all those BMDs are going to pay for the season anyway. Sabre? Any thoughts?

If the entire team does not stand and sing, you have a division in the locker room. It will only fester. Force them to do it? NO, but they need to know coming in that it is tradition, and we honor our traditions.

Band puzzles me. Four years I had one band member in a class. Band requires talent; not 4.3 forty or 39 vertical; but a different kind of talent plus they have to use that talent while marching. That said, it is my understanding that a large number of kids audition, meaning many leave disappointed. How difficult is it to replace 100 of the 300 if there were 300-400 rejects?

LHABSOB can you help me out?

What do you mean the band doesn't have to play it.

I got from the report that The Eyes isn't going anywhere and will remain our school song. If the band (actually the band director) decides not to play our school song before and after each game, we'll be rapidly getting a new band director.

So the band plays the song before and after each game, but some of the band members don't play, resulting in a slightly quieter Eyes of Texas???

Even the malcontents have now stated The Eyes is our school song and isn't going anywhere. I can't see the band failing to play our school song before and after each game. That would send the band director packing in the blink of an eye.

If they don't play, they don't march, and the bus leaves for Tarleton State within the hour.

I read the whole report and thought it was what I expected----thoughtful and judicious. The fact that some will not sing or play is reflective of the society we live in right now. Some of us old guys recall what the country was like in 1960s and feel a sense of deja vu. I don't know if it has come to the extreme it did then with fathers and sons hating each other, etc, but we need to follow Lyndon Johnson's advice on how to weather tough times; be like a jackrabbit in a hail storm; just hunker down, lay your ears back and wait it out.

UT should make some money off this and sell the report in a hardbound leather book.

I think you're on to something. Pay a woke kid 1,000 to watch the entire movie from his moms basement. Then make it a pay per view for $6.99 to watch him/her watch the movie. I bet we could get 1,000,000 people to pony up for that.

My favorite part of The Report was the Eggs of Texas story...

“The Eggs of Texas” Demand Accountability

"Along with athletics, students found other uses for the song. In early May 1913, the “Great Griffith,” a self-proclaimed master hypnotist, arrived in Austin for a series of shows at the Hancock Opera House. It wasn’t long, however, before it was discovered that Griffith’s talents were less than advertised, and the hypnotized “volunteers” in the shows were frauds. “The students of Old Texas are not naturally hard on shows,” stated the Texan, “but if there is anything that makes the wild cat wild it is to be stung by a faker."

”Before the Friday, May 9th performance, some 400 UT students purchased tickets and filled the gallery seats. All had stopped by Charley’s grocery store on Congress Avenue beforehand and purchased at least two eggs. At an appropriate moment in the show, with the Great Griffith and seven, seemingly mesmerized, volunteers on stage, the signal was given and students launched their “hen fruit” towards the performers, all while singing “The eggs of Texas are upon you.” The Great Griffith and his partners quickly evacuated, took the first train out of town, and weren’t seen again."

Hey did someone post that the marching band will be required to play the Eyes? :hookem:

They did their due diligence, no substantive reason to change the song...

    Play the song! :hookem:

they are in effect paying the dissidents to be in the new band which will not play at football games; scholarships for playing in a band which has no function at all right now. We are Texas. We are rich as Croesus. We pay ******** to go away and play with themselves. Whoop, as our aggie friends say.
