I believe Shaka is undoubtedly a very high quality character person. And I don’t think he is a particularly horrible basketball coach. I just don’t think he was ever the right fit for our program. That is based on the fact that his early successes were greatly overvalued. He ended up being serviceable in many ways but his contract was egregiously unilateral for an unproven commodity. His achievements mirrored his ability, and they just weren’t close to being good enough. Certainly not enough to warrant what he was paid.
Texas was always going to be a jumping point for him. Thankfully we can close out that chapter in our annals and move on. I thank him for his efforts here wish and him nothing but the best and hope he finds success at Marquette.
I’m ready to move on and hire a coach that can thrive in our program structure, will make this his final destination, and help get our program closer to a MNT.
