Yup, I was at the game that day.... brilliant 24 yard TD run by Earl. You are correct TE Steve Hall from Broken Arrow OK provided the key block on the run.

Horns beat ou 13-6 that day... saw Texas fans, grown men in the stands, with tears in their eyes after that win....

 

Willl never forget the tackle on Thomas Lott by Johnnie Johnson and Brad Shearer on 4th down to seal the win.

 

Erxleben had a 69 yard punt that flipped the field and got the Horns out if a BIG hole.

Horns played magnificent Defense in '77 - held the sooners to 2 FG's the whole game!

 

I was a senior that year and drove up with two of my business school buds to attend that game at the cotton bowl in Dallas. We had some excellent seats that were randomly selected in a student drawing, and as I recall our seats were around the 35 yard line. Earl gained over a hundred yards against OU that day, but most of those yards were very hard to come by.

As a side note, we drove up on Friday and went straight downtown to join in the festivities. After that we went looking for a cheap motel since, you know, we were indigent college students but not smart enough to make a reservation.

We found a run-down pay-by-the hour motel and stayed for 2 nights. And I kid you not, we got up Sunday morning to leave, and in the parking lot we see a burnt orange and white decked-out car with TEXAS CHEERLEADERS written on the side. Of course we had been drinking a lot over that weekend so who knows if any of this really happened.

By the way, that's the game that the 1st and 2nd team QB's went down and Randy McEachern finished the game for the win, so maybe I did imagine the whole dang weekend. LOL

 

Erxleben was exceptional that day. Between him and Leon's defense, all the offense had to do was not give it away.

 

Erxleben was incredible the whole season. I saw him kick the field goal against Rice for 67 yards, as I recall.

 

Indeed, he was/is the best all around kicker of all time.

When Randy came in the huddle, the conversation from OG Rick Ingraham was something like: hand the ball to Earl and get the hell outta of the way.

 

I'm with you Sabre - Leon Fuller was the best DC Texas ever had... apologies to Coach Boom & Gene Chizik.

IMHO, 1977 & 1983 defenses were the BEST UT has ever had... with apologies to 2005.

 

You can say what you want about Coach Akers, but in my mind he was a very good head coach at UT and did have some great defenses. Yes, Fuller was awesome. And of course, they did have some truly great defensive backs to work with.

 

You realize that punts are measured from the line of scrimmage, not where it is kicked from in the backfield?

So, assuming Erxleben was the customary 15 yards back from the long snapper, he is credited with a 69 yard punt, which means he actually kicked it a whopping ~ 84 ~ yards!

His kicks were booming with great hangtime. Never verified if DKR got complaints from NASA about them interfering with their satellites, but farmers did send him a thank you note saying that the punts brought rain.
