(Note: Edited from 32-18 during Sam's time here to 27-16 with Sam as a starter based on HIC's assistance below)
I am not implying Sam was some kind of world beating, elite-level college QB. He had his flaws.
But it is hard to believe we were just 27-16 with Sam as a starter.
I know we are trying to look forward not backwards, but, as more distance has been put between the then and the now and our perspective has been aided by time, this stat still jarred my consciousness.
    27-16

Thanks for the correction. I misread as the article I took from stated "32-18 during Sam's tenure".
My intent was to focus on him as a starter, so let's go with your #s, which show a roughly1% worse w/l of 63%...27-16.

I wasn't even trying to find the correct number. Just Googled and found that. I was just curious, since I have blocked from memory the TH years, how these wins were spread out.

    Edit: Can't type

What I want to do now is compare that record with a bunch of notable very average QBs and records with their teams over that same span....but, alas....I've already gone to the bathroom today.

    Chin,
I respect your right to disagree..and that's fine...
    But I am curious...
Are you saying that we did not underachieve with a supposedly real good college QB or that Sam was not a real good college QB?
My general assertion/sentiment was that we grossly underachieved if Sam was suppose to be a real good/great college QB....and I did so while leaving the door open for assertions that he was not.
    What is your argument?
I'll say for my part I think it a little of both...
I believe we underachieved greatly with a pretty darn good (though not great/elite) college QB.

I put a large portion of Sams woes on the offensive coaching staff and TH's ineptitude.

And the fact Texas never fielded a defense until Ash arrived, and 1 season wasn't enough to get it completely turned around. You can't expect the offense to be all world, which is what you need when Vance Befor and To Orlano are the DC's.

Because this is an opinion board, and I value most everyone’s opinion here, except one that I blocked who trolled here to argue about minor unleaded things like n posts, I firmly put any questionable stats… Wins/ loss… Whatever firmly on the shoulders of Tom Herman‘s in ability to be a leader.

And this is coming from a guy who was 100% on board with Tom Herman until well into the 2020 season.

I was roasted over and over on here from people I really respect and they were right, they were 100% right -regarding Tom losing the locker room .. being humble as a leader is the number one characteristic you must have is humility and Mr. Herman had none

I bet he’s a really good guy and I hope he learned from this time will tell. I’ve learned from my mistakes I hope he does as well

Every season there was a stretch of the year where the offense was super productive, with Sam looking like a world beater. And then there were long stretches where we couldn’t produce and Sam (and everyone around him) looked out of sorts.
Then we’d make a bowl game and go back to looking like world beaters again. And we would all forget about how inept we can be.

This inconsistency to me is a sign of a bad program. Bad coaching too but big picture bad coaching. It’s like the staff was constantly trying to put out fires. Neglecting aspects of the game because they are working ok to shore up huge problems in another area. Only for the law of averages to catch up to neglected area for it to become the next huge problem.

outside a handful of games I dont think we ever saw a complete football game happen under TH

For some weird reason, they were the Bowl games... every year.

I’m pumped about Coach K and the implementation of his defense, which I believe will ultimately be a noticeable step up. That being said, Ash was a pretty decent D coordinator—much better than most that we’ve had for a long time. Ash will do fine at other places going forward.

It is stupid to look at won/loss records of a QB when there are 21 other starters and a head coach. The guy broke lots of long standing records because he was very good.

Sam is a great Longhorn on and off the playing field. He carried us in more than a few games. We'll have a much different look now, and (with a little time) we'll probably be significantly better. But Sam deserves all the kudos he receives.

After QB's like Tyrone Swoopes and Jerrod Heard expectations were always a little to high for Sam.
Sam was a good QB, but not a great QB, and he for sure upgraded the position. Better coaching would have helped Sam a lot, and he will always be one of my favorite Horns.

Not that hard for me to believe. We've had horrible teams for a decade. Sam's a good QB not a great QB, but with just about anyone else, it could've been less than 27 wins.

There is this illusion that because Sam took 98 percent of the snaps in the 2020 season that he was our best option at QB. Well I disagreed with that then and I disagree with that now. I believe that TH had a boner for him at QB (probably because of his leadership, dedication, work ethic and minimal success) so TH failed to take a look at the possible potential of Thompson. He should have let Thompson start a game to see him under fire and if he did well then play him in other games. Hell Saban did that in a championship game which they won. Bama was very sluggish in the first half so he put in the back up QB to start the second half and then they flourished. That gave me upmost respect for Saban (I want to say Satan here but I can't do it).
Now I am not a Sam hater, he did the best he could but he didn't have the "it" factor except in leadership. But in all fairness to Sam perhaps he wasn't surrounded with quality talent either. I understand that. Winning is a team thing in every sport.
Ok, I thought that TH was narrow-minded or tunnel minded in some ways. Time will tell if Thompson is a legitimate upgrade over Sam.

    That's a good point.
A good argument could be made that Shane Buechele was a better QB than Sam. I think Sam was a better fit with what Tom wanted to do with the offense, but Shane could very well have been overall more productive than Sam at Texas.

I thought things looked good with Shane in the first year of Sterlin Gilberts offense.
Not that I wanted Charlie to stay, but it would have been interesting to see Shane and Gilbert together for a second season.
Sam obviously fit Hermans offensive idea of a bigger bruising QB that could run the ball more.

With all due respect, I believe you are missing the point. The point isn't Sam's record per se, which, as you point out, is really a team record.
The focus of the thread is/was intended to be the team's record with Sam.
And naturally with him as a component of the discussion, the level of his ability and play will be raised as a topic...

I finally lost all respect for TH and how he handles Sam after running him 4 consecutive times into the Ga line at the goal line. After the first (or might be 2nd run I felt certain Sam got up woozy and was afraid he was concussed but what does he (TH) call but another QB smash, like we were going to miraculously now open a hole.
Never liked TH after that. Also I think Sam played hurt much more than anyone realized but that’s on them both.

No one can downplay the importance of Sam's grit, determination, leadership, and dedication. It is indeed a team game, and lots of times, Sam didn't get much help from his teammates. And I think we can all agree that coaching left something to be desired. Sam has earned his place in Longhorn history for his accomplishments. This is now a new era.

I hated to see Sterling gilbert and his friend the o-line coach leave. That was disappointing to me. Anyone that can produce a two thousand yard rusher should be kept. But that is the world of college football changes.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

Sorry, I skipped all the responses to the OP. Sam had flaws and his decisions / play cost us some games - I did not stop to research to try and determine how many games.

Kid played his *** OFF every week to put the Horns in a position to win.

So riddle me all you arm chair analysts: how many of those losses credited to him were:

LATE game losses that were poor BONE HEADED Herman decision(s), or lack of good a TH decision(s), a stupid & unecessary fumble on a goal line run vs. TCU, a D penalty that resulted in made FG vs. ISU, other DEFENSIVE lapses, etc.

    Hmmm?
