This is a good miniseries based on a real life gem smuggler and serial killer on the hippie trail back in the 1970s, operating mostly out of Bangkok. Lots of hippies went missing. He and his henchmen were responsible for many. A low level functionary at the Dutch embassy in Bangkok works the case after two Dutch hippies went missing then were found burned to death.
With the killer’s Indian henchman “AJ” and his French Canadian girlfriend turned henchwoman “Monique”, it also develops (better than I can recall seeing on tv) the moral descent of previously good people into monsters assisting the chief monster. In real life, he went free and moved to Paris a wealthy man, before later being jailed in Kathmandu, Nepal...
It’s worth a look.
Note for international travelers—when you’re partying in Bangkok with people you just met, watch out for strangers putting stuff in your drink.
