not to be argumentative but "back" is the operative word there.
Tyron and his back hasn't played a full season in 4 years ...and L'al coming off significant pelvic/hip injury....= ??
Hope you're right ....and yet I hope Sabre is right^^^^^ too.
But I think Sabre is giving Jerry too much credit.
Jerry continues to be afflicted by the same thing he has been throughout the years.....
    arrogance and pride

I'm sure his being drafted was mentioned...but worth highlighting again a somewhat unheralded and under-appreciated -in my view- player here in TaQuan Graham was one of the higher draftees from UT at #148 by the Falcons.
I will always remember him as one of the players who played like he wasn't intimidated in the RRRs and brought the attitude and spirit we need more of. On another note, he didn't get enough credit for the disruption he created to open up things for Ossai.

I believed then and believe even more now that of all the guys who left early, Eagles was the one making the biggest mistake.
He was just starting to realize some of the potential we saw in him coming in and would have likely had a chance in Sarks offense to grow and show even more.
Will now be a bigger uphill climb, though if anyone will make sure an UDFA gets a shot, it is Jerry. Wish him the best....but hard to argue he shouldn't have stayed IMHO.
    On another note...
The other I doubted was making a good decision was Chris Brown. It appears at the time of this post he has yet to sign anywhere.

I agree. Best of Luck to a great Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger.

However, it is depressing to think that during his 4 great years as a starter for the Horns, Sam has played against 4 separate Oklahoma quarterbacks who have come and gone to the NFL.

Year 1: Baker Mayfield wins Heisman trophy and is drafted first overall in 2018 NFL draft. Current starter for Cleveland Browns.
Year 2: Kyler Murray wins Heisman trophy and is drafted first overall in the 2019 NFL draft. Sam actually beat Kyler Murray in the Red River Rivalry that year. Current starter for Arizona Cardinals
Year 3: Jalen Hurts is drafted in the 2nd round 53rd overall in the 2020 NFL draft. Current starter for Philadelphia Eagles.
Year 4: Spencer Rattler. Favorite to win Heisman Trophy in 2021 and projected first round draft pick.

Sam competed very well against each of the these Oklahoma quarterbacks in each of his 4 years as the Longhorn's quarterback. Sam has more experience and has more career yards, completions, and touchdowns that each of these Oklahoma quarterbacks.

Yet Sam is drafted only 218th in the 6th round, and is projected to have to compete very hard to simply be the backup at Indianapolis.

Something is not right with the world.

To me that’s a stretch, but we’ll see. Don’t rule out Bijan.

The "something that is not right" is that our QB coaching is garbage. Sam had a massive step up from year 1 to year 2 and after that he never progressed. If he had proper QB coaching he would have progressed much much more than he has.

His pass protection and WRs just standing around (or running straight without breaking off their patterns and coming back) when he was scrambling for his life also had something to do with it. During Sam's last year, the blocking was a bit better as was the WR play, but compare the UT OL and WR corps to OUs during his tenure.

IMHO, while Sam's QB measurables don't equate to a high draft pick (and the NFL seems to agree), he can still add value in the NFL with his versatility. He could be like a Tebow-style QB, or even come in at RB or TE, run trick pitch plays, etc.

Sam was a good Longhorn on and off the field. I wish him well and hope he makes it and sticks in the NFL. I think he will.

We'll see how he develops this year, but Coburn could make a jump towards the top. Those huge, strong NTs with decent mobility are highly valued and don't grow on trees.

Kansas City, as per Lamar Hunt's wishes have always gone after Texas HS stars to supplement their team. Most notable was Mickey McCarty, the greatest athlete to ever come out of Pasadena, he played basketball and baseball for TCU, but never football. Chiefs drafted him as a TE. Ken Pearson from Conroe was #2 discus thrower in HS in the US (behind Mark L from Lake Charles). Ken played TE for Rice, and when the Cowboys passed on him, Lamar drafted him.

Someone help me, did Lamar also grab Glenn Gregory and/or John Roderick out of SMU?

Wow. Talk about thinking out of the box and finding diamonds in the rough.
Maybe they should also look at the arena leagues and overseas leagues.
I also bet some of the heavier power forwards in basketball could make good DEs.

Pete Gent & Mickey McCarty come immediately to mind, and I am not sure if Billie Wright got an offer from the NFL after transferring to Memphis or not.

If I recall correctly, John caught a touchdown that in Navy's only regular season defeat 1963.

They were burners, but unfortunately their biggest contribution to SMU football was running Peruna

And none were taken in the first round for 2021.

When you say "huge, strong NTs with decent mobility," you better be talking about the next Aaron Donald if you're using a first round pick. Coburn is no Aaron Donald. Same goes for Collins... so far. He can't seem to crack the top-2 for Coach K in the Spring, but that matters very little in the end game.

I think if Sanders flips back to D and puts on enough weight to be considered a Jack, he'd probably have 1st round potential as well.

I totally agree, Chop, and have stated elsewhere I expect him to do just that^^^^^
(When I say top I do not mean top of the draft...just in standing as a top-notch CFB disruptive lineman....and a draft pick)

If Coburn can just turn into Poona Ford on steroids, we will have a hell of a beast on our hands.

There's some split in opinion as to the value in the NFL of the really big, really strong down DT. These players will often tie up 2 blockers and can be very disruptive with decent mobility. Think Casey Hampton, Siragusa, etc. (Older folks think Curly Culp--the true key to many a good Oiler Defense). I think there's still a place for them in the league. Coburn is already strong by NFL standards. He can move well enough for a really big guy (probably better than Siragusa). Conditioning is the final piece of the puzzle. If he continues his upward trend, I think he could pop into the first round--it's a realistic goal. Otherwise, he's a probable high rounder, barring injury.

    Don't cheat now.....
But 247 just released a Top 25 Most Intriguing 2022 Draft Prospect List, and one Longhorn made it. It isn't Coburn. One of my absolute faves for 2021 big time breakout...
    Care to guess??

Yep. Overshown may be something special. Hope so. Also, I was really impressed with our young OL stepping up after Kerstetter injury and Cosmi bailed out. Would be nice if Jones or Karic became bad *** mofos.

    Haven't peaked --

    Could be:

Bijan (but I hope he stays 4 years)
    Jacoby Jones
Okafor (who IMHO has underperformed so far, but the new staff talks about him like he's Larry Allen, or Anthony Munoz, or someone...)
