This had to happen in texas cause other schools in other states would have an enormous recruiting advantage. Personally, its sad that amateur athletics is going down this road but on the other hand college athletes work and sacrifice their a** off and put themselves at risk so I have mixed emotions about this. I am sure at least one of our esteemed posters will put this in proper perspective.
This will give an advantage in recruiting to the big name schools IMO.

and to think a lot of students would think a free education and unlimited tutoring was pay enough.

It’s here so we have to get in at the start but I do not like it. I think it will overall be a huge cluster ****. It definitely favors the royalty.

This is good news. Now schools can eliminate athletic scholarships and save bookoos of m00lah.

Even that wouldn't be necessary. Go up to at least 50% of the guys on campus,
"Say kid, you want to be on the football team? We've got an open spot."
    "Sure!"
"We're not going to pay you or anything, and you'll probably never actually play in a game. But you get to put on the uniform, run out onto the field in front of thousands of fans, and you'll always be able to say you were a part of Texas football. All you have to do is play a sport and lift weights."
    "Sign me up!"

I just don’t like that in a college team sport ... QBs get paid NIL, but their OL don’t ...#slipperySlope we on ...
I used to prefer college football because it was ultimate team game without that

Agree completely badass, if forced I could accept an ‘all funds go to a pool to be shared by all players’ type arrangement. But I see this being an elite bringing corrupting to the entire sport, most likely the entire sports program.

So a player can be paid for TV commercials, radio spots, and be paid for their name, image, or likeness being used for commercial purposes. The Federal Congress may see this as an opportunity to tax the same as income. Could this also open the door for the Feds to look at this to also levy a tax on the value of the scholarship? Right now scholarships are considered to be for the "cost of attendance" and neither athletic nor are scholarships awarded to students are subject to income taxation...yet. IIRC, academic scholarships might continue to be exempted since the student is not otherwise compensated. Only funds they receive for other work off campus is potentially taxable. But an athlete being paid to lend his or her name, image and likeness may be subject to federal taxation and perhaps to state tax in those states where income is taxed. This will be interesting to follow, especially if the entity paying them treats them as a mere contractor and does not withhold on the funds paid. Hope the players hire a good attorney and CPA to help them navigate the income tax issues.

Here’s another thought. Some of our athletes may be Olympic level and will being paid affect their standing? The IOC is fairly strict about no pro athletes in the games. They relaxed it for baseball and basketball some years back, but not track and field. Their rule was if an athlete received money for playing a sport, they were considered a pro. Just something to consider.

I thought that changed years ago. NBA players can play now.

Not a fan of this rule but it's out of my control so I guess I'll just have to see what happens.

All the O'line has to do is get together and tell highly paid QB that if he wants time to throw the ball and be Super Star QB he needs to spread the wealth to the guys that give him the time to be highly paid QB.

States will too. If a player plays in their state and is earning income as a result, they will be taxed.

No question in my mind the ‘income’ will be taxed as income.

You bet! States tax the players of of pro teams for playing games within their state based on the "day rate". That is one of the reasons pro teams generally arrive the late in the afternoon or early evening the day before, and leave right after the game is over in order to minimize their taxes. That will now apply to the college players as well. And for bowl games they spend a week or more.

What's the over and under we hear about a players having tax problems with the IRS and State Departments of Revenue. Also, a few cities also levy a city income tax.

How about the recruiting advantage we'll have because we have no state income tax? That may be going too deep for a 16 year old to understand initially, but once we figure out the angle to play it could be huge.

I hope they figure it out fairly quickly. States can be brutal when a failure to report and file charge is made. I hope a player that gets one doesn't ignore it.

Thee may be a some states that will not tax athletes on their income due to heavy lobbying by BMDs, but most states want that tax money, so the situation will be interesting.

How much will the cost of Game Day Programs sold at the stadiums go up? Will it also raise the cost of tickets? Schools are going to have to recoup the costs they have to pay players for using the players pics on or in programs which are sold to fans. Could get down to ridiculous as in if someone posts a pic of a player on a Fan Board or Facebook or Twitter, but I would argue that the person had no expectation of profit or payments when the picture was posted. It's still a hassle though.

Are the coaches and AD going to want their pound of flesh if their likeness is used in advertisements by the school? Hopefully, some lawyer has already told the schools that their next contract has to include language that their payment is in their contracts. If not the school will need a better lawyer.

Also, I assume walk-ons get paid also - they are the only ones who need the pay.

Considering this is about name, image and likeness, I doubt a picture or jersey of any walk on and for that fact 75% of the overall roster ever see's social media nor a jersey being sold to the public. Not sure what the rules for being on TV is but jersey sales I'm thinking will be the bulk of the revenue split up. If the timing were right Bijan would be a wealthy man before leaving UT.

I think it's fine. It's the reality of media today. The elite "stars" are huge money makers. The other, albeit very valuable teammates, should appreciate free education and the other stuff.
