I'm still shocked Vic hasn't hired Johnnie's replacement. While he's on his own timeline, I'm just curious as to the reason. I can't come up with a logical reason after like 5 weeks . . .

When Amina committed, I think most of us thought that he had made his selection and was communicating that to recruits. If not, why not wait to commit until you knew who your primary position coach would be?

I'm wondering if he's having to wait until some bureaucratic deadline has passed. Let's say he used Johnnie's job posting to hire Calamity because the waiting period had passed even though it looks like she's taking over for Elena. He now has to wait X days until he can officially hire someone using Elena's position. Just a theory.

It's probably wishful thinking on my part but I wonder if he's waiting on decisions to be made 90 miles north of Austin.

We obviously have to take his word for it when he said in the the Danny Davis article that he would take his time, and that there wouldn't be a hire anytime soon.

But, he’s made two hires since Johnnie’s departure. Just hasn’t hired anyone to coach the post players, and that role has been vacant the longest.

Not surprised seeing as it will probably be the most important of all the hires

I don't know how to determine which position coach is more important than the others.

While Johnnie was also an Associate Head Coach, that doesn't necessarily mean the replacement hire will also have that title in addition to being the post coach. Typically, that title is based on a coach's experience level, and the pay grade. Dionnah is also an "Associate Head Coach", but Elena was simply "Assistant Coach".

Now that I think about it, Johnnie's replacement could end up being a peg below Dionnah based on tenure with Vic and seniority. Of course, if that hired candidate already holds an "Associate Head Coach" title at their current school, they probably aren't coming to Texas for a lesser title.

Meaning most important because Vic’s teams have always played inside out. If your offense goes as your post players go, that position coach and their ability to develop will be the most important

Hmmm...179-89 (.668) and 86-58 in PAC12 games (.597) over 8 seasons at Cal before leaving for the NBA in 2019. Made the Final four in her 2nd season (2012-2013) but never past the 2nd round in their other 6 trips.

Let’s see if she fills her staff before Vic does. :D

Gottlieb's overall record at Cal was very close to Karen's at Texas, also 8 seasons (184-83/.689 and 93-51/.646 in conference). Aston made it to the tournament 6 times compared to Gottlieb's 7 and though she didn't get to the Final 4, she had better year-over-year success with 3 Sweet 16s and an Elite 8.

Cal also traditionally had no real success in WBB prior to her arrival. They were habitually near the bottom of the P12. The fact that her and Karen’s resumes are comparable is a credit to her

And like Karen, a really good recruiter but the x's and o's aren't on par.

Not Texas related, but Wesley Brooks was hired by McCray as an assistant coach at Mississippi State officially on April 13th. Today he has accepted a job as the same position at Ohio State. Wonder what is going on at MSU??? Not a good look IMO. :confused2:

Would argue against that because she never had as much or more talent than the top teams in the P12. She over achieved a few seasons.

How many times did Karen perform better than expected in a season?

That may have been the case early on but she was eventually getting the best players from Northern California to go to Cal. In fact, one of those teams with really good talent on it lost to Coach Aston at home in the Sweet 16.

2015 Tournament, 2nd game. Cal had a much more experienced team with seniors Brittany Boyd and Reshanda Gray who would go on to the WNBA. Ariel and Brooke were just freshmen.

“The 4 and 5 seeds, Texas (5) and California (4), played on Cal's home court. At the end of the half, the two teams were tied. The Longhorns opened the second half with a 12–0 run, but the Golden Bears closed within 4 points with 90 seconds to go in the game. But Kelsey Lang scored at the other end. Imani McGee-Stafford had a double-double for the Longhorns with 20 points and 11 rebounds and Texas held on to win 73–70, sending the team to their first Sweet Sixteen in eleven years.”

I think she also had a freshman wing player Gabby Green from Northern California who was one of the best players in the country coming out of high school on that team. And Mikayla Cowling who was also a talented player coming out of high school on that team as well. Again, she may have started off with not much talent but she was getting some of the best players to come out of Northern California in years.

Looks like there has been some movement in the staff directory - I've been randomly checking to see if any new names pop up, hoping someone makes a mistake and posts the new coach/staff names before they've been announced (I've been bored).

While they haven't removed Ketara Chapel, Jazz Holmes is now listed both with the position she had last season (Graduate Manager) and Coordinator, Player Development. Blair Schaefer had the title Director of Player Development when she was hired last year but that position is now listed as TBD and Blair has the Director of Operations title. Based on her own description of what she did last season, it sounded like she was already doing DBO duty.

Elena is still listed as an assistant and while they have added Kristen Grant, Calamity McEntire still hasn't been though both have been officially announced.

I love Plonsky’s title descriptors.......Executive Senior Associate........... Lots of adjectives there....even ignoring Chief of Staff which is another title and job function. Having dealt with developing job descriptions and organizations over many decades in the corporate world.....there is zero chance we would ever get away with that. Guess academia can get their HR and administration to do wonderful and amazing things.

Now Calamity McEntire is on the staff directory but the open Assistant Head Coach position has been removed. Until we get some clarity on Elena's status, I'm not sure what it means...2 people have told me she is no longer with the program but the longer this drags out, the odder it seems.
    :e-thinking:

Exactly, tells me that there is either a pay/legal issue at hand or Vic has asked to time this specifically in order to manage any fallout. Which is fine, but my only concern is that the recruiting is about to start up again and that means we’ll be down one in the road....not sure what the rules are about Blair or someone filling in temporarily

Baylor boards mentioned Sytia and KM didn't get along well and she stayed for money. They are concerned Texas may be in play for her services. Let's hope.

Does she have experience coaching post players? DJD and CM do not. She recruited Kalani Brown and Lauren Cox but coached guards at Baylor.

I don't know but I would be willing to bet Vic would mentor if necessary.

She hasn't posted anything UT or Austin related in some time. Usually a strong indicator she is gone. Hope not.

Right. Whoever is hired to coach post players will be doing it the way Vic wants it done for his style of play anyway... experienced or not.

That's why I mentioned Blair yesterday. When she was hired, her job title was Director of Player Development but I've heard her describe what she did last season (arranging travel and meals, working with MBB to develop practice schedules, etc.) and most of it sounded like a DBO's responsibilities. She may have just been pulling double duty but now she officially has the DBO title. Not being that familiar with the distinction between Coordinator of Player Development and Director of Player Development, it's hard for me to guess what kind of experience/resume is required.

I hate to keep going back to Nneka because I really want that to happen. I just don't want to be disappointed.
Anyway, she posted on FB today "After five years on the west coast, I'm officially back home." She has a location pin with Austin, TX. People in the comments are asking her questions about whether she is joining the Texas staff, with no responses of course.
