I remember back in the 90's when Title IX passed and they formed the rowing team to increase the number of female sports. They couldn't get enough to field a team so they held an open tryout to pretty much any female student who wanted to come and only a handful showed up. I knew two girls at the time who made the team and got scholarship money and they had never rowed a day in their life. Now look where they are!
Same with my friend, but she was big into personal fitness, so she was somewhat trained for the physical exertion required. The athletic department put out their annual fundraising brochure the following year with a photo of the 8 (wo)man rowing team with my friend in the photo. I thought it was funny because I joined a rowing club a year or so earlier on Lake Austin, but didn’t get such recognition.
Awesomely done!! Congratulations! I’m looking for a way to see a replay of their winning race. Anyone know if any channel might be showing it?
