"Texas is no big deal, other than to Texas fans. This is not a relevant program anymore," Paul Finebaum said on ESPN's Get Up. "Go back to 2013 when Texas people fired Mack Brown — he didn't resign, he was shown the door. The same Mack Brown that has North Carolina in the Top 10. Texas can't even win its own state anymore. It lost two of its best (in-state recruits) to Alabama, it's pathetically behind Jimbo Fischer at Texas A&M. It's way, way behind its biggest rival up in Norman, Oklahoma.
Penis head has this all wrong. The program is relevant after getting rid of 2 irrelevant head coaches.
Some of what he says is true. We tried the social justice thing with strong and although I really like him as a person, he sucks as a head coach. We all hoped binder boy would be the answer and he was an improvement but he cost us the 2 Brockermeyer lineman that finebaum talks about and also Ewers. Its easy to see Sark is righting the ship and if the cards line up, we are on the correct path. Either way its 3:38 and ou still sucks!
Saban's record is awesome, unprecedented, and will probably never be duplicated. That said, Dennis Franchione left mighty 'Bama for aggy, and Bear Bryant NEVER beat Texas when he was there. These things go in cycles. People have short memories. Alabama was not always on top, and they won't be forever. We probably need to leave the Big XII or expand it to make it more pertinent, but we will come back someday. History shows us that.
Texas is relevant like the Cowboys are. We will be talked about if and until we start winning again. So, he is incorrect in that aspect of our relevance. Ironic that he is talking about Texas while saying Texas is irrelevant.
the football program? in truth, all you need is the right coaching staff. we're the flagship for the greatest high school football state in the world. 2 years of 10-win ball will pull the skis back up out of the water.
Again, relevant in the sense we are being talked about is one thing. Relevant in that Texas can win and beat OU and win the conference, etc., is another. We'll see.
Did you watch the clip? He isn't saying we aren't a program people wonder about and talk about. He is talking winning. Texas is not relevant in that sense.
You disagree that Texas is irrelevant the last several years as a winning program or that Texas can become a winner again? I think Sarkisian can make it happen, so I do disagree with Finebaum on that part.
I disagree with the premise that not doing very well for the last several years makes us and irrelevant program. I think there are a few programs, that all they need is the right coach and a couple of great recruiting classes and they'd be right back there at the top. To me that is not irrelevant. It's just a bad few years
Okay. Texas finds itself in the national conversation over the last decade in terms of sucking, not in national title contention or the like. Anyone here can feel however they want to make them feel good. That's fine. I'll wait another 2 weeks for a reply.
Finebaum's appearance has nothing to do with his opinions. I don't think he was a very good source to go to for this story. He may not be an SEC homer, but he's close. BTW, I don't disagree with the general premise that we are irrelevant right now when it comes to teams being considered elite. We aren't even close to that level. But Finebaum using the Mack Brown analogy, that he's doing well at North Carolina right now, is beyond ludicrous. Anyone paying attention to Mack could see he had lost his edge the last few years at Texas. Now? Yeah, he's recharged his battery. Good for him. Let's check his record vs Clemson in 4-5 years and see what we think of his NC program then. My guess is it won't be pretty.
Texas sports won their bowl game, sent both basketball teams to the tourney, and is in the CWS. Not to mention 3 NC this year (women tennis, swimming and diving, and rowing) and NC runner up (volleyball). If Finebaum doesn’t think Texas will step up from Herman, then he is a moron. Or was he just stating the obvious from the end of Mack’s tenure? Listen, if he has to use the past to take a dig at Texas, then he thinks the future is bright and he is getting his last insults in before they are stale.
Indeed, the analogy I've used on Mack back at NC is like a 60 year old golfer going to the Senior Tour. Everyone is just happy to see them, expectations are lowered, and the numbers don't really matter. Mack had a good season at NC last year - and also lost to a terrible FSU team, and lost in the bowl to ATM. Think anyone at Texas would be OK if he'd lost to OU and then ATM to close out the year, regardless of overall record? It is true that Texas hasn't been relevant on the national scene since the 2009 season. Hopefully that turns around, but until it does, it's a bitter but true pill that has to be swallowed.
I agree and would submit our TV schedule (time) as evidence. A 3:30 game in early Sept is only the latest example. We’ve gotten the short straw on game times a lot lately, just the way it is when your not in the top 10, or 5 depending.
