I like CT...always have...but he better protect the ball.

 

While I appreciate "fluid logic" as much as the next guy, that might be the worst take I've ever heard.

As much as some in the fan base dislike it, there are absolutes in life. Basic math is one of those absolutes. When a player has 3 years of experience in the program, his experience is 3x greater than a player with 1 year of experience.

A change in coaches doesn't magically freeze time. It doesn't cause a 22 year-old to revert to being a teenager. Nor does it erase three years of study, apprenticeship, and hard work.

 

No, but a change in coaches does mean a change in practice habits, terminology, expectations, drills, etc. A guy with three years experience at the college level (and the maturity that comes with age) should be able to make the necessary adaptations a little quicker than a guy with only one year of collegiate experience under his belt.

But you have to acknowledge the switch to a new program puts both players back to square one in terms of learning the new program.

If the Coaching Staff had not turned over you might have a case. But everything (including S&C) went out the window when Herman was shown the door and Sark walked in.

In terms of learning a new system, the playing field is even. Which makes what we saw in Fayettenam more indicative of Card's age/inexperience. It was a HUGE stage for a RS Freshman. Dude will be a good qb, he just needs a little more seasoning.

 

I apologize if this is not a new observation but one thing I thought about after Sark made the announcement that Thompson will start Saturday. Regardless of the quarterback Saturday, the player is probably going to look pretty good against an inferior opponent. So the fact that Sark made the change as early as he did tells me that he’s prepared to make a more permanent change. In other words, there’s little doubt that Card would have had a good game against Rice as well. That would have been the expectation. And had he (had a good game against Rice), Longhorn Nation would have subsequently been opposed to a switch. Given that reality, Sark still made the decision to change quarterbacks. Impressive.

Of course, I agree with the decision.

 

There are at least 4 SEC schools that could beat this Arkansas team with their 3rd string quarterback. Hell, Bama could probably have the towel boy (or girl) just hand off every play and still beat them.
Now if it turns out Arkansas is better than initially advertised, I’m wrong. But I had also hoped BYU, Notre Dame and Maryland were better - but they weren’t.
That is what’s troubling to me.

 

Rice had as good a showing against piggie as we did and lost by only 4 more points then we did.
Can we really call them inferior at this point.
Let's hope Casey and the team make them look that way.

After the lackluster showing the Horn's had against the Pigs last week, everybody on the team including players and coaches should be embarrassed and hopefully all have their minds right this week and will come out on fire to demolish Rice. Rice appears to be a tougher team this season, but doesn't seem to have the depth to finish. I still wonder how different last week's game would have been if Sam had exercised his option to play this year instead of jumping to the League. Might have at least been closer, but we'll never know for sure.

 

Yes, it would have been closer. Sam was a four year starter. That kind of experience is rare in today’s game.

 

Yes. They are inferior. Like back in the 90s. We had beaten them 20 something years in a row and then Mackovic benched some players over curfew. And TCU, hadn't lost to them in 20 something years and Mackovic screwed that one up. I think he had the 'nads to say something like "well, you can't expect to beat Rice and TCU every year".... yes dipsh**, you can......

 

If this game is even close (within two touchdowns), the doubts that began to creep in last Saturday will be validated. Let’s hope that we saw last weekend was an aberration, but we truly just don’t know yet.

I do believe that Thompson will be a difference maker.

 

Did not see the Rice - Arkie game so cannot make any educated description of the whys and why nots but truth is Rice played them even fir longer than we did. So this may not be the cake walk we’ve come to anticipate. Again we have a game that is a legitimate test for the boys grit and determination. I’m hoping for a good showing by Casey and a good follow up when Card relieves him. But I won’t be astonished if game is competitive for three quarters. I’ll be wide eyed astonished if it goes longer than that.

 

And wouldn't have been out-motivated and out-hustled by the Hogs the way most of the rest of our squad was last week (see OU game 2020 for a similar example).

 

I would simply add that IMHO Thompson offers similar upside. Not leadership yet, but he can run and read the defense. His passing has been very good with no turnovers. Give the young man a chance.

 

Todd Dodge knows how to do that and how to teach it, so why does every kid from Southwest Travis County forget when they get to 21st & Speedway?

 

You seem to be saying that Sam Ellinger can't read a defense. I don't think I agree with that.

 

Sam's first year plus, he could NOT read a defense if that put it in giant letters on the jumbotron. Why? I have no idea. Didn't seem to have that problem playing for Todd. He obviously got better.
