Yeah, that's what we need - a bloody primary fight that ends with the party fractured and a nominee who would lose the suburbs and risk putting Beta in the governor's mansion.

    From the article:

Guillen is already well known as an outlier in his caucus. He is the least liberal Democrat in the House, according to rankings from Mark Jones, a political science professor at Rice University.

    and

"Friends, something is happening in South Texas, and many of us are waking up to the fact that the values of those in Washington, D.C., are not our values, not the values of most Texans," Guillen said. "The ideology of defunding the police, of destroying the oil and gas industry and the chaos at our border is disastrous for those of us who live here in South Texas."

    Seems decent enough.

    He will, and he will.

What a terrible place to argue only the government can be trusted with guns. Has Robert Francis no knowledge of 1970 events?

I am not sure BobFrank has any knowledge of anything, except how to use daddy's protection to get out of serious DWI charges.

Also, his music is unpleasant to the ears.

Although, at least he took the stage and presented his own unique form of "art."

Joe Biden's audible wet farts sound better than Beta's "music".

Yes, but that isn't saying much anymore. Not that long ago, you would see several Democrats who voted with conservatives a lot. That isn't the case with Guillen. He votes with them enough to be noticeable, but he's not a reliable conservative vote in the House.

I don't know Huffines but I do know West personally . I like the guy and he is a staunch conservative but I also see him as being a bit too much of an opportunist for my taste. I think West came to Texas specifically to run in Texas rather than to be a part of Texas. Nuanced I know, but in my opinion he's just using us to further his personal ambition. Abbott's approval may be a bit low but that is because he currently has not only left/Dem detractors but also a pretty significant hard right group of detractors. As soon as the primary is over those on the hard right will rejoin the camp.

Abbott has conservative detractors because he gave leadership to RINOs in the Tex Lege. We could do worse but we could do much better than Abbott.

Abbott is a hypocritical hack as I've explained before, but primarying him is foolish. Of course you can do better, but your odds of doing worse are higher than your odds of doing better.

The legislature elects its own leaders. The governor doesn’t get a vote.

So long as the GOP has the insurance industry's nuts deeply entrenched in its mouth, the things that make Abbott crappy are going to be present in any GOP nominee including West or Huffhines. I've accepted that. So then my choice is between Abbott and someone who will risk putting Beta or some other drag queen story hour candidate in the governor's mansion. With that as the choice, I'll take Abbott.

You need to brush up on your background knowledge of how the Texas government works. It is structurally set up to keep the governor from having much power other than the veto and the appointment of people to boards. He doesn't get to appoint the treasurer or attorney general and he gets no vote in how the legislature is run.

The Democrats who took over the state after reconstruction intentionally set up a weak governor form of government because they did not want another dictatorial governor like the reconstruction Republican Edmund Davis. We are still stuck with that 140 year old constitution, which has to be amended a dozen times every election cycle. Under it, the governor does not get to just do whatever he wants and so even if you get some genuine knuckledragger like Huffines or West your great dreams will go unfulfilled. Blame it on 19th century Democrats

the good thing: Beto won’t be able to do much should he win except run his mouth and appear on television. Like Ann Richards

And a whale of a job he did last session. Phelen is the speaker Texas has needed for 15 years. The last two were elected by a Democrat / Republican mix, so were weak.
Abbott is no bold leader like DeSantis but he’s OK for the institutionally weak Governor’s position in Texas. Him plus Patrick and Phelen is a winning combo for Texas conservatives.

Beta male’s entry makes MM much less likely to run. The Texas Democrat party is entirely in love with the fake Mexican, and unlikely to vote for MM instead of him. Plus no media kiss assing in the Democrat primary like they would have for MM in the general against Abbott. Instead, hard questions and going over everything he’s ever said with the current speech codes as of 5 minutes ago. What fun is there in all that?

So probably no MM entry. Just the same douche who lost 3 years ago to a much more vulnerable candidate in a much better Democrat year.

MM hasn't exactly come outas a real serious candidate. The interviews I have seen were all Kum By yah
Kinda like Beta's when he started out

Sadly, I won't be able to vote against him in the primary. Since I signed a ballot petition for an acquaintance to run for a judicial position on the Republican ballot, I am locked on the R side of the primaries...

when Beto ran against Cruz he had a lot of national help, particularly the free MSM lovefest. I think MM was hoping he might get a little of that as well but MM hasn't glommed on to the far left talking points the way Beto did. Without a lot of national MSM help and puffery a Dem is still 6-7pts underwater in Texas as a starting place. This coming year with how unpopular the Dems and Biden are, they are even farther behind.

Against Abbott, yes. Against West or Huffines, not necessarily. West is a carpetbagging opportunist, and Huffines has already thrown away a state Senate seat.
