My dad had a buddy that ran a newsstand, he would call and tell my dad the day before Dave Campbell's was put out. We used to read it cover to cover.

I always looked forward to its arrival in the Summer. It’s also the only magazine ever that some of my friends and I were mentioned in. Small town kids could see guys they knew mentioned in print.

Dave came and talked with my son’s high school football team in San Antonio(Reagan Rattlers) around 2006 or 2007 and he was great. I got my Dave Campbell magazine that George Bailey posted of Worster signed by Dave and he talked football with the kids. We lost a great one. I have every one since 1968, four short of WorsterMan.

Loved Texas Football. It was a staple at my house during the sixties and seventies. Somehow my picture got in it as a HS player to watch in the 1965 issue.

Since some of you stated DCTF mentioned you in a magazine or two, I gotta say, me too.

FWIW, and it ain't much, DCTF mentioned me in coverage of my HS, my Sr. year - fall 1971.

AS JV, we were 9-1. Sr. year, we had a bunch of injuries to key starters and finished 5-5. But we unexpectantly did upset the #1 team in the district!

First Magazine I would buy every Summer! What a LEGEND! People forget how “detailed” that “manuscript “ was….Lol!

I LOVED when his 2A reviews were just as comprehensive as his 5A reviews! (pre 6A)

    RIP

You guys beat wyatt in non district in 71. Future Longhorn Ivey Suber was the tailback. Future Baylor bear and all pro DB Mike nelms was also on that team.

Not to misdirrect, but raymond Clayborn was also mentioned in the magazine ..
in 72. Trimble Tech. Best HS player I ever saw out of FW, best I ever played against.

    Horn2run,

RayClay was one of the best RBs I ever saw. Although I never saw him in HS, I remember him returning kicks. The guy loved to run over people rather than step out of bounds.

As a human being, he was/is a totally class act.

I am getting way off topic.... H2RA, I remember you played for OD Wyatt. SW did win a non district game in 71.

Wyatt RB, Ivy Suber was really good and went on to play for DKR. Unfortunately, he is mostly remembered for 1976 ou game.... that I witnessed :puke: Hardest hitting college football game I have ever seen.

Re: Raymond Claiborne. he was a STUD! He was one of the best HS players to come out of FW back in those days.

My Jr. year, FW Southwest had Sherman Lee, all district and second team all-state LB that went on to play for DKR. Played enough to letter but dont think he ever started...

When we played Tech in 72, his SR year in HS, they suited up 14 or 15 players for varsity at the end of the season. He did everything. Everything. He played QB vs us and even though we won he was clearly in a class by himself. Was in on every tackle, you couldn't catch him and I don't recall kicking to him. Unbelievable talent. Mike (and Mark) Renfro at AHHS were impossible to cover, but Clayborn was a whole different creature. One man army

Seriously, Texas Football was a publication that you couldn't wait to get your hands on, and read it cover to cover in less than 3 days. Nothing else was like it

Knew Mike Renfro and Mark off the field at multiple summer camps in Colorado back in the day. Mike was a couple years after my time in HS but during football games at camp he was always open for every ball you threw his way, unless it was way over his head or on the ground. I knew then at camp he would be a star at AHHS and probably play college ball.

Sadly Mark Renfro passed away a number of years ago... cancer IIRC.

My DCTF issues from 1966 to about 1970 are in rough shape as I looked at them almost daily from early June to late Sept.

    DCTF magazines were GOLD!

Outside of some occasional news from the sports section of the Ft. Worth Star Telegram or FW Press newspapers, there was little news in the summer about HS and college football.

DCTF was a football life preserver.

    RIP DC

His magazine made Texas High School football known across the country. I always had a copy when traveling - excellent flight reading material. A prized reference for those interested. I still read it. My wife knows to look for it in June His magazine would take you to Cuero or Odessa or San Angelo or wherever you wanted to check on. Also great stat reference.
Did not know him, but he will always be a great Texan.
