Yes, he does seem to be a bit of a 'playa', at least by yesterday's standard. The NIL aspect might change that some, as there are now financial negotiations that can be enhanced by delaying, playing hard to get or seeming unsure. You are correct with the loss assessment under usual circumstances, but this time for us there is no opportunity cost (at least yet) because we don't have anyone we turned down or would be turning down for him. Now, to completely contradict myself, for every new 2022 commitment brought in we will have to have a corresponding existing player leave, or in reality, get uninvited to return next year. Just the idea of running off someone who loves the program, is fully bought in and is working his butt off in exchange for a 'playa' or head case stings.

My Bama friend and the most knowledgeable college football fan I know made an interesting comment this morning. He said that Saban’s defensive strategy is to have difference making defensive lineman who can funnel plays to the LBs. He added that they have not have such DLs for the past two years and that because of that deficiency, less talented teams have been able to move the ball on them.

I guess u just enjoy being a pin that burst everyone's bubbles. You think horn fans need your negativity. You are our savior. We are too dumb an unrealistic so you gonna set us straight.

Maybe the coaches needed to put a gun to the heads of the kids in the portal and force them to commit to us.
Maybe you think the coaches didn't work hard enough. Maybe the coaches don't care about getting the best players cause they don't care about winning. Whats your answer because its probably the only right one.

    Thank you Poms!!!!!

I was about to believe the 2022 season should be cancelled since we will not have any players worthy of playing!!!

I'm not sure it was so much about Okafor being great as it was not having a whole lot behind him that was ready to perform.

I intellectually believe they will be better. But hearing "the o-line should be much improved" year after year has pretty much made me tone deaf to that prediction now.

Sorry you are so sensitive Pom. Maybe try pumping a little more of that sunshine your own way when you start taking things so personal. I've said from the beginning that the coaches either ignored or failed to solve their OL problem for next year throughout the most advantageous opportunity in modern history. That's a fact. I've also said they may still be able to address the issues in the spring, but it will be much harder because the number of portals will be far less. I am hopeful they will, but that doesn't change anything about the passed 2 months. It is what it is. Get your feelings hurt when people point out the facts that interfere with your sunshine, but I wouldn't recommend it as that is what is being negative.

Well do you think the coaches ignored making the o-line better?
Yes they have "failed" with o-line transfers thus far. If they only had some magic potion.
Someone suggested that they didn't want to risk losing Campbell by getting experienced linemen transfers. I don't know. Anyway, better to get Campbell first, then maybe getting transfers. So perhaps there is more behind the scenes than we know. You say you were pointing out facts. But do you know all the facts? I'm not mad at you. I can be a whiny crybaby myself.

On the portal OL issue, whereas with other positions like LB, DE, WR and TE there were well publicized options, I don’t remember hearing of many if any can’t miss O-lineman that were available. Perhaps I missed it.

Tight Ends have dual responsibilities, right? They are pass catchers, and also blockers. We have had OL woes for years (for reasons I don't completely understand). Has the lack of production from the TE's been due to poor recruiting, or have the OC's had to keep them in for blocking to keep our QBs from getting killed? Or perhaps Hammer just needs to do a better job of recruiting TEs.

I do think that the coaches chose to ignore Minnesota OT Curtis Dunlap's comment that he would be interested in visiting UT, and there were several within the dept that wanted to pursue the 3 year Cal starter, but they chose not to. There were others in the portal, but they were not necessarily (at least I don't have any idea) sure things like the other 2. I think they are all in on Campbell, who apparently made some comments to other recruits while in Florida about the number of OL recruits Texas was taking. I don't think they wanted to run him off to OU. I get that he is really, really good and I'd like to have him, too. However, even if he does turn out to be a P5 difference maker, and there are a lot of perceived sure thing recruits who never pan out, he likely won't become that for several years, at best. When you are as weak as we were this year, passing on a proven sure thing (or 2) to solve your issues for next year to try and land a hopeful stud for 2 or 3 years from now doesn't seem that smart. (It will seem much smarter if they get Campbell 2/2/22 and then they end up pulling in a proven P5 OL or 2 in the coming months, but they still lose an important spring period for gelling and learning curve.)

Of course I (and all of us posters) don't know all the facts. No doubt there is plenty going on behind the scenes. Regardless of what we know, we can't have Bama waltzing into Austin next year and Route 66ing us in front of 20 top recruits and a national TV audience, then a possible 2022 implosion to match the 2021 implosion. Let's keep in mind the team psyche is pretty fragile right now after losing 6 in a row, embarrassingly, and us riding a 1 game win streak. If Bama does that to us and we implode again, A&M and Bama end up with the # 1 and # 2 recruiting class again and future recruits stop believing Sark the same way they stopped believing Herman. I don't want that, but this is a very fragile situation after going 5-7 and the loss in belief they could even win. We could live without Campbell, but we can't withstand that.

I'm not being negative, I just don't want them to get so far behind the 8 ball they can't get it back, and they just passed on the golden geese. It will be harder now, but they can still get it done if the right guy or guys portal and they can properly motivate them.

Getting a good/very good TE is only going to help. It's silly to poo poo getting a good player at a position of need because we still have needs elsewhere.

We have needs elsewhere, right. I get it. We don't stop getting guys everywhere because we havn't gotten an impact transfer OL.

1000% correct. We just signed an amazing class after 5-7, and people thinking we’re just going to attract great players because we’re Texas. This I’ve been watching my DVR BS thinking like they know more than our coaches that have been evaluating all there lives.

    Creaky,

I saw every game this year and recorded each one. Frequently, we had two TEs in the game, BUT they almost always lined up as WB used to and side by side. They were blockers plain and simple. Every trap we ran was a TE trap, but the TE was lined up as a WB because our lard-*** OL couldn't get out of their way.

IIRC, DKR took a couple of HS TEs and made pretty damn good OL out of them, or should I say Leon Manley did.

We need 3 TE moving around pre-snap like the Harlem globetrotters doing the basketball weave.

i have not seen anybody poo pooing getting a good TE from the portal. I poo pooed the comment made that you don’t need a good OL if you have a good TE. You may not respect what you see with your own eyes (maybe you have vision problems), but I feel pretty comfortable saying our OL was bad when I rewatch every play on the DVR and see our OL getting their butts whipped play after play after play. Go ahead and “trust the coaches” and then pull out your DVR and believe your eyes are lying to you every time you see Casey Thompson, Hudson Card or Bijan getting blasted in the backfield and 1 or 2 OL standing over the pile looking down and shaking their head.

    OrangeClad,

In your multiple reviews, did you see #70 (left tackle) block anyone. Falling backward into our QB or RB does not count as a block.

The kid has size, maybe has strength, but it's like he's never played before. I lay that at the feet of our OL coach and our S&C coach.

    Sabre,
I try not to call out anyone specifically because I know some of the players read this board and I know they are trying very hard. That said, I saw most of the players on our OL getting beat consistently last season on a consistent basis.

I agree with you, but in over 50 years, I've never seen anyone perform worse wearing the Burnt Orange. I'm hoping the S&C people greatly improve his strength and mobility, and the OL coaches improve his techniques and ability to read the defense.

If none of that happens, I hope he enjoys his time on the Forty Acres and gets his degree to allow him to enter real life.

Wait, is this a news flash?
Do you think that we think we had a great offensive line last year?
But the line was not as bad as you make out because we finished 17 in scoring.
    Texas offense rank
    Pts per game# 17th./ Texasdefense rank #93
Yards per game #43rd. / Texasdefense rank #96
Points per play. # 8th./ Texasdefense rank #93
Yards per play. # 27th./ Texasdefense rank #100
    RZ scoring. #6./ Texasdefense rank # 97

Plus Card held on to the ball too long many times making the o line look worse. You will see Card play much better this year though.
Bottom line is our defense sucked and that cost us games. But this is a team sport. Both sides of the team need to play better.

Let’s fire the coaches, get rid off all the OL and hire Orange Clad as our new head coach. My point is that you, nor I are in that locker room, watching these kids and coaches do what they can with Herman’s recruiting class that added no quality in the trenches. We finally get a top notch class and you trash the coaches and players. I for one will trust the process, then watch downers like you praise them and say I told you so. Nuf said. Like your passion though. Go ahead and poop away

No doubt our D was pretty bad at times, particularly when they got gassed after the Offense went 3 and out for an entire quarter or half of the game. Check the time of possession through all the losses. It was very lopsided. The scoring numbers are a testament to Sark's offense. But also, DL who are running free don't always make the tackle on every play, especially if the QB is scrambling. As well, as I already mentioned Bijan made the first guy miss on 85% of his runs, if not more. Unfortunately, that guy was in the offensive backfield a lot, I would guess 35% - 40% of the time. Bijan's super humanness resulted in a lot of yards, but you can't credit that to superior OL play. As well, look back at the scoring in the box scores, vast majority of it in the first halves of games, before the D made adjustments. Once adjustments were made, we were often done for the day. That is on the coaches, but oddly enough, the OL usually got worse, much worse as the game wore on and those adjustments were made. Card held the ball too long. Agreed. However, it was no where near as long as Vince Young held it. Not even close. When your OL is bad, you can't afford to hold the ball. Unfortunately, a QB has to process 2 - 4 reads per pass play. That takes time, and depending upon how good the QB is at it, it can take more time for one than another. Our OL was so bad our QBs often didn't have time to process those reads. But, indeed, Card was slower at it than Thompson. Both would lose composure as the game wore on after getting sacked, hurried, etc. play after play after play. They , especially Card would start watching the rushers instead of the DBs and then bail out too trying to escape the rush. The OL was very porous and he knew it.

DKR also turned a pretty good running back (Bobby Mitchell) into a good OL.
