Great announcer, outstanding human being, adopted Longhorn particularly after his son Ron went to Texas.
Ron, Bill, Craig. We have been blessed with a long run of truly outstanding play by play guys. Ron will be missed.
Franklin was probably my favorite all-time announcer for the Horns. 'Campbell up the middle, at the 30, the 20, the 10. Count it off at 35 yds for Earl, 1st and goal!'
Loved him, and counted his voice on par with that of Keith Jackson when it came to college football in my mind. Love how he always called it "The Frank Erwin Special Events Center in Austin, Texas." He will be missed. RIP and Hook'Em
I got to know Ron when I worked for McLane Company in the late 80s. He did the VO work on our training videos, and he was such a nice man. And he and I would talk football whenever we got the chance.
Goosebumps? Try shivers and tears. I’m a third generation Texas graduate. I'm proud to be an American, more proud of being a Texan, but most proud - and by great lengths - of being a Longhorn.
I got to meet Ron a few times when I was working at the Daily Texan and another local sports pub in the early 90s. Fantastic announcer, and always seemed like a genuine down-to-earth guy. His calls of UT games are still my favorites. "Let's count it off..."
If I am not mistaken, he commentated the 1990 " Electric Game" between Texas and Houston. Outstanding performance! Very much one of my favorite commentators RIP Ron
