LSU came to Austin for a non-conference game in 1966. The crowd was huge, about 300-400, and I was able to get in for about fifty cents. There was no "band" or halftime entertainment, so when LSU went into the locker room for half, Press left Pete on the court to be the entertainment. Floppy hair, droopy socks, and I thought I was watching a white version of Meadowlark Lemon, who I'd seen with my uncle in Beaumont in the old McDonald Gym. Pete put on a dribbling, ball handling display like I'd never seen.

Has anyone ever totaled the number of points he would have scored if there had been a three-point line when he played?

Dale Brown charted his FG's made and said he was easily around 52/game with a 3 pt shot.

Pistol Pete was an AMAZING BB player. Best I had ever seen back in the day.

Can you imagine if he was around today with 24/7 media coverage? I doubt he ever got to play in the NCAA tournament at LSU as only 1 school from each conference got in and LSU couldn’t get past Kentucky.

If they had the three pointers when Pistol Pete played, he would probably have NCAA records that wouldn’t have a chance to be broken. He was great and died way too soon.
