As for the Packers fans, build an indoor stadium if you don’t like it…

Question, ‘cause I don’t know—do they ever play highly important soccer games around the world in 0 degree wind chill in the snow? Or run track meets, or tennis tournaments? It’s really an absurdity that BILLIONS of dollars are spent on NFL football by fans, teams, advertisers etc. developed around one model of the sport—football in reasonably controlled conditions (and of course the Super Bowl is controlled)—but then we allow a few of the quarterfinals and semifinals of the sport to be conducted where normal football cannot be played.

What are you talking about? Packers fans along with Steelers fans, Patriots fans, Giants fans, Bears fans, etc., etc., etc. love those conditions. They perceive it to be home field advantage. Super Bowls are held in mild climate or climate controlled venues for the sole purpose of maximizing revenue. Did you really just try to compare playoff football to a tennis tournament or a pansy *** soccer match? Maybe indoor golf should be next.

    Exactly.

It’s home field advantage late in the season and the playoffs. See that time San Diego played a playoff game in a Buffalo snowstorm.

I'm perfectly fine with the Packers and Steelers and Bills fans braving the elements. I'm not terribly fond of indoor stadiums (particularly after the 2003 Texas-Rice game in NRG Stadium. I much prefer Rice Stadium as a venue). I like Minute Maid Park only when the roof is open. And I hope and pray that Texas-OU is never, ever played at Jerry World.

What I meant to convey was sympathy for the hardy Packers fans who were probably very confident that the harsh weather conditions would be a significant factor in favor of the home team. Last night, it wasn't.

    GJ,

I once had the privilege of visiting with Bud Adams when he was weighing his options for the Oilers, which at that time were:

    1) Yet another Astrodome redo

    2) An incredible offer (far better than Nashville) from Los Angeles

    3) Nashville, Birmingham, Orlando, and a few others

I asked him if he knew what the first thing his players looked for when the new schedule came out - it was any games in those northern cities in December. Why not give the NFL another first look - Houston outdoors in September & October with heat and humidity.

George Brown only designed and built one football stadium, and I believe it is still the best ever designed. Outdated? Yes, but if Houston was willing to spend $60-70 million on another redo of the Dome, why not look at what $70 million could do to Rice Stadium.

Rice couldn't provide suites, and the pressbox would rival Rosenblatt for lack of space.

Yes it has always been that way, and yes it is a home field advantage. To me, it’s a type of advantage I don’t like, because the game doesn’t even look the same or favor the same things that the other 11 1/2 months a year are about. It would be like if the home team could change a major rule—say that it will take 20 yards to make first downs or a field goal is 5 points—it’s no fun to watch and it’s not even the same basic sport.
Just because this absurd distortion of football is physically more demanding (survivalist) doesn’t mean that wanting proper conditions to determine champions is “pansy assed.”

But if you need ammunition to flame me, yes I am a Cowboys fan from all the way back.

Ha! How about watering down the grass field and practicing on it a bunch late in the week to make it a mud bowl game.

The ags accused us of that old trick before.

It’s an old high school tactic used against faster teams.

Rams are all over Brady and the Bucs so far . . . 27-3 midway through the third.

    . . .

27-6 getting toward the end of the third.

. . . Kupp just fumbled, and the Bucs have the ball on the Rams 30. . . . now down to the one. Fournette is in for the score. 14 point game at the start of the fourth.

I saw on Facebook yesterday a video about the league purposely making Tom Brady an icon. A hero. And showed Goodell admitting as much on the stage in front of a group of people. That even the game officials made calls in the patriots favor so that Brady could be immortalized. Also TB knew this was happening.
Of course on facebook anyone can rig anything and say anything. Anyone know anything?

LA is a quick three and out. Watch out. Game suddenly feels different. . . . Rams strip Brady on first play. Rams ball. Center snaps ball over Stafford's head on first Rams play. Bucs ball at midfield. . . .Bucs drive a bit, then stall--fourth and 14 and they go for it. Incomplete pass, but after the ball hit the ground, Rams defender gives the receiver a head shot. Post possession personal foul. First and 10 for Rams deep in their own territory.

LA misses FG. Brady drives Bucs, but misses a pass on fourth and 10. Rams ball. TB has to use its time outs. TB gets the ball back at about its 23 with 3:56 and no time-outs. Pass complete for a good gain on first down. Brady hits Evans for long TD pass. 36 second TD drive. 7 point game with 3:20 remaining. All three games this weekend so far have been close. Much better games than most of them last week.

. . . Akers fumbles for the second time today. Bucs ball in great field position in Rams territory. 2 minute warning.

    . . .
Fournette runs for the score on fourth down. Tie game. Four Rams fumbles and a missed FG. Rams are giving this one away.

Stafford throws twice to Kupp, the second one a long completion down the middle.. Rams spike it with four seconds left and kick the field goal for the win. Wow. What a game. All three games so far this weekend have been won by the road team with a FG as time expired.

Bills, another road team, start the game with an impressive TD drive, with Singletary getting most of the touches. , , , , KC answers with several big runs by Mahomes, including a dive at the pylon for a TD.
. . . Then KC forces a Bills punt, which is downed at the KC one yard line.

14 all at the half. Looks like it'll be a clean sweep for close games this weekend.

I have watched very few NFL games this year. Living in Houston, with Drew Brees retiring, I have little or no interest, but this game is enough to make me want to watch more. All the playoff games this weekend were close, but was it five lead changes or ties in the last five minutes

Buffalo’s defense sucks. They had a 3 pt. lead with 13 seconds to go and KC moves 45 yards down the field and ties the game and goes on to win in OT. KC WRs running wide open on every play. Prevent defenses prevent you from winning.
