Abbie was at the top of the followers list when I viewed Shane's IG account a few mins ago.

 

Wow, that's out of left field. But he does seem very qualified and should be quite an evaluator of talent. Here's a video where he talks about his experience (including 10 years at the D1 level). And it sounds like he may already live in Austin?:

His bio from the PBR website:

Shane graduated cum laude from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2004. From 2005-2007, he served two seasons as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Texas under Jody Conradt. Shane assisted the Longhorns' program in all areas, including equipment, camps, on-campus recruiting, and as an on/off-site practice coordinator for the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The Tempe, Arizona native returned to his alma mater as an Assistant Coach with the women's program beginning in the 2007-2008 season.

Shane served as an Assistant Coach at the University of Texas at Arlington for four seasons under Samantha Morrow. He was in charge of all offensive strategies including transition, secondary break, and half court offenses and sets. He organized and coordinated the recruiting and worked on the court with the perimeter players.

He held the position of Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator at Rice University under Greg Williams from 2012-2015. On the court, Shane worked daily with the Owls' perimeter players.

Shane began his work with Premier after having close ties to the PBR staff at UTA and Rice, as both schools were National Subscribers to the recruiting service. He and Joey Simmons have been familiar with each other for over 20 years through the club and AAU basketball scene.

Duties for Premier Basketball include marketing and event operations responsibilities, Director of the Premier Basketball Report, and managing and directing Premier Basketball Camps and oversight of Premier Basketball Player Services. You can find Shane on the floor with players & teams observing, learning, and coaching whenever available.

 

Hummmm, don’t know how I feel about this. Interesting. I’m sure Vic and company will do or have done due diligence.

 

The daughter of Jason Key (works for Laflin at PBR) is a Texas WBB manager.

 

If true, I like it. Not only does he have 10 years of coaching experience at the D1 level, he has a ton of connections with AAU coaches and players from around the country. With high-school recruits and especially now with the transfer portal, that's really important.

 

Mark her as skeptical?

 

He has already replied to her tweet and confirmed what she said. LOL

 

Laflin responded to her tweet basically saying if it were true you’d be hearing it from his mouth. So appears to be a rumor (at this point).


Since he had been on Conradt’s staff I thought maybe some validity to it at first.

 

I’m so confused, so is it smoke there or is it not true at all?

 

He's also worked as an assistant under some very competent coaches.

 

Jill Kramer is no longer at TCU coaching women's volleyball. They hired one of Baylor's assistants this spring.

 

I’ve stopped following this a$$. Being unreliable is bad enough but he has bigger issues.

 

Hopefully I’m not jinxing this but 3 of Vic’s 4 coaching/staff hires this season and last were announced on Fridays.

 

Wow, that's a good catch. 4/15 (Elena), 4/22 (Sydney). Is this Dom's day?

 

Wow! Something happened there.

Looking at the transfer list, it looks like 5 players left and 2 players coming in. 5 players leaving, maybe they knew? But 2 players coming in? Definitely weren't told. Or 5 players leaving was enough to tell her it was time to hang them up?

Can you really blame any Coach for hangin’em up with the environment that exists today with NIL and the transfer portal. It’s a mine (mind) field out there today. It’s not about getting a paid for college education anymore! AD’s of the future at a university without great NIL financial backing will have to be happy with a Coach that represents the university with class & integrity, even if they don’t win! The best they may hope for is a team that overachieves for a season before players want to move on and enhance there playing career. A Creighton for example. Today’s elite players will get an agent and set down to negotiate the best NIL deal before signing. I am sad with what college basketball has turned into but will always support my Horns! We are one of the lucky ones, I guess.

 

Very well-said, Ellis. I'm right there with you on this. It's becoming a big turnoff for me.

 

And many of us said it when NIL happened. This is the beginning of the end for college sports. It will become nothing but minor league sports leagues.

 

The same reasons why I don't follow pro sports much (money, team-hopping, individuality, etc.) are now becoming a part of collegiate sports. I do think that players should be allowed to correct a regretful choice and transfer ONE TIME without being penalized. But transferring two and three times combined with the NIL crap... I don't like it at all.

 

C Viv is a legend and has done great things for the game of Wbb. But she basically retired at the beginning of the year when she took her leave of absence. On top of the Transfer and portal rules, I think a lot of coaches are also retiring because what we just experienced with the uncertainty of the whole covid thing as well. Especially the older coaches, which worries me about Vic and maybe a possible earlier retirement.

I do think that there needs to be some parameters put in place with the NIL and transfer rules, but overall I don't have a problem with it.

Coaches have been doing what the players are currently doing for years now. Jumping from school to school on top of making hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars. Look at all the coaching turnover just this year.

You can't have a problem with the players doing it, but not the coaches. What you're seeing now with players was eventually going to happen with the NCAA being under constant pressure for years from those who had an issue with them exploiting the players.

 

I have always thought it was unfair that players were penalized for changing schools by having to sit out, but coaches could up and leave anytime they wanted with no repercussions. I also agree that the NIL thing is not necessarily bad, but as you said there absolutely needs to be some parameters put into place. It just started and it's already getting a bit dicy.

 

Dom is no longer listed on the Staff page or in the Staff Directory but she has the Vic TABC Coach of the Year announcement from 30 minutes ago in her IG story.

Probably just inconsistency by whoever manages the website; but something is changing.

 

She was on all 3 last week but they added Sydney to the Staff & Staff Directories this morning.

 

I don't know a thing about Dom other than she played for Vic back in the Miss. State days and he is likely very comfortable with her and appreciates her loyalty but is she ready for prime time? She has no or very little coaching experience as far as I know. I don't think a "splash" big name hire is needed but I would think the person should have a proven ability to coach and teach. I'm sure if she is his choice he has put a lot of thought and research into the decision so we shall see. Nothing against Dom but I just can't seem to get too excited about the possibility.

 

So, any guesses as to candidates for our 2 assistant coaching positions? I honestly don't have any even as I look at coaching staffs across the country.

 

With Texas being rated the top WBB job in the country, I would think Vic could get just about any asst. to come here. I guess it will be a total surprise (unless Dom is promoted for one of them). Last year, looks like Vic added Calamity on April 30 and hired Phillips on June 16th (replacing Harris who was hired by Auburn on April 3rd). Camps start June 4th. So my guess is we'll know by the end of the month tops.

 

Well, that was one subjective poll, and we have no idea who comprised the voting panel.

A lot depends on the salaries being offered. If Vic is gonna try to lure away some established assistant coaches, then he has to offer them a sizeable raise from their current salaries. Especially with how expensive it has become to find a place to live in Austin.

There are other intangibles as to why coaches seek a new job. When Vic left MSU, it was mainly because he wanted to return to the state of Texas for family reasons. The assistant coaches he hired one year ago didn't come for that reason.
