Although not a brilliant or unique take, NIL is really screwing with the game.
In my fantasy world — and of course it won’t happen, I would love to see Sark or CDC come out and say that “Texas is not interested in getting into a bidding war with schools like A&M or Nebraska.” I know. That’s a pipe dream. But imagine if Texas had engaged in such a bidding war? What message would that have sent to players already on the roster, and some very good ones? In fact, one has to wonder how Mathis’ new teammates at NU will receive him. Open arms? Perhaps outwardly…
Not sure if this genie can ever be put back in the bottle, or managed to any extent. The NCAA is powerless so unless a coach like Saban goes out of character and takes a stand, this out-of-control spiral will continue unabated. And even then, who knows if it would make a difference.
Perhaps until players (many of them) like Mathis are a complete bust will anything change.
