The season may feel lost but as the old saying goes it aint over til its over. Horns look to turn this thing around with a mid week home game tonight at 6:30. Preview and game notes from Texassports: Baseball preview: Houston Baptist - University of Texas Athletics 2022 5 3 HBU (PDF) - University of Texas Athletics
Frankly, the goals vs. HBU should be (1) nail down the 4th starter--Morehouse did real well during the last mid-week game as the starter. Another good game as starter tonight, and he's the guy; (2) get more in-game experience to promising young relievers that could make a difference in the regionals--in particular LBJ and Stewart, and old/transfer reliever Olivarez--who despite really good numbers has been denied an adequate # of innings. Maybe Olivarez pissed in coach's coffee, shows up late to practice, throws spitballs during video review, or something... Olivarez has good numbers but continues to not get many innings. We waited awfully late in the year to start developing LBJ in earnest. He's shown up quite well in recent outings. Stewart's still a work in progress--but Ooohhhhhh that nasty slider + high 90s fastball! We know Harrison's going to show up when he comes out of the bullpen. We know what Nixon's got, although maybe the 9th inning would be a good time for Aaron to continue to work through his control issues that he's had this year. We also know who's generally not going to show up when they come out of the bullpen (names omitted).* *Some of these guys may develop over the next year or two. Nobody should be written off, But we kinda know who's who for the purposes of this year.
Well it was either watch the Horns or Netflix. Somehow the Horns won that one. Especially with a 4-0 lead…. I’m needing to bill David Pierce for the 5th of George Dickel that I needed to sip ( being a t sip)to get over the Sunday game…
Campbell hits a chopper bouncing grounder. Play at the plate. Murph in a run down! They got him. But…. Men on 2nd and third. Two away. Could use another run or two here. Backup catcher at bat.
And it’s Hodo to the plate. Bases loaded. Deep fly caught. 6-3 Horns. Leaving lots of runners stranded.
Floodgates fully opened in the 5th. 13-3 us. We’re getting a number of little used pitchers some experience. Bout what you’d expect.
So, since we can destroy Houston Baptist, it only goes to figure that we could also destroy Dallas Baptist. Right?
It was a chance to get in some more pitchers. Olivarez got a scoreless inning in—by the numbers, Olivarez is one of our better arms. Stevens appeared in relief. Morehouse went for two scoreless innings to start. DuPlantier took the mound, as did Stewart, but neither left without runs being posted on them. DuP isn’t the same since his surgery. Stewart has nasty stuff, but apparently, he’s still a development project at this point.
Hardin-Simmons would kick our asses. Mary Hardin-Baylor would too. East Texas Baptist might. Wayland Baptist would win one of three. But Baylor would not.
I’ve got it. Next year. A Battle for Texas Baptist Supremacy. A baseball tournament with Baylor, Houston Baptist, DBU, Hardin Simmons, Wayland Baptist, East Texas Baptist, and Mary Hardin Baylor. DBU is the odds on favorite. The winner plays a holy war series against the winner of another tournament with: Incarnate Word, Loyola of NO, Notre Dame, Gonzaga, and Boston College.
Ok. The 30 years war tournament. Held in Frankfurt, Germany. On the Catholic side: Notre Dame Boston College Gonzaga Incarnate Word Loyola of New Orleans On the Lutheran side: Texas Lutheran California Lutheran Valparaiso Concordia Pacific Lutheran I think the Catholics are going to win this time.
