I would normally prefer night games as well. But ECU's stadium is oriented to where the sun sets over the left field wall - in the batter's eyes. Stupid!

The Pirates are used to batting with the sun, so day games will reduce that advantage.

Another thing about Clark-LeClair Stadium is the berm seating beyond the outfield wall. Fans were hanging over the wall all weekend with their arms dangling down. Fan interference has got to be common there. Of course the way to alleviate that concern is for the Horns to just hit the ball over their heads!

Their pitching #s look good and their pitching stats are roughly comparable with ours. Their staff ERA is 4.05. Our staff ERA is 4.05.

However, their batting is relatively weak compared to ours. They only have a 0.284 team batting average and 71 homeruns for the year. As a team, we're batting 0.317 with 118 homeruns for the year. (some rather insane offensive #s for us this year!)

Overall, I'd say statistically, it's a slight mismatch in our favor. We're 30 in strength of schedule, while E. Car. is 34--basically a push. They have the home field advantage, but we're the better team (though not by a huge margin). Objectively speaking, I'd put us as a slight favorite. Will their home field advantage overcome our batting power, and our 1-2 starters? That seems to be the pertinent question.

NCAA Baseball Greenville Regional Preview: East Carolina Pirates - Streaking The Lawn

East Carolina rundown going into the Regionals:

This season they come into Regionals riding an 18 game winning streak, the best in the country which is good enough to earn them the #8 National Seed in the whole tournament.
    ...
For the year, ECU went 42-18 overall, 20-4 in the AAC and breezed through their conference tournament going 4-0.
    ...
Leading the way for the Pirates is Carter Spivey who in a rare feat was named AAC Pitcher of the Year coming out of the bullpen. Spivey led the league in ERA at 2.42 and amassed a 7-0 record with five saves. On the year he had 68 strikeouts and a 1.12 WHIP. He was key for an East Carolina pitching staff that doesn’t rely heavily on long outings by their starters meaning he often pitched multiple innings in his appearances.

Joining Spivey on the AAC First Team were Zach Agnos, Ryder Giles, and Lane Hoover. Agnos is the Pirates’ do-it-all shortstop who batted .324 with seven home runs while also going 3-0 with a 2.89 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched. Hoover led the team in batting average, hits, on-base percentage, and tied for the team lead in doubles. Like Agnos, Giles was a two-way player starting at shortstop at the beginning of the year before entering the rotation as ECU’s Saturday starter. Once in the rotation, he recorded a 4-1 record with a 2.86 ERA in nine games started.
    ...
Making the All-AAC Second Team were pitchers C.J. Mayhue and Garrett Saylor.
    ...
Mayhue is the Pirates’ Friday starter though he only had ten starts in 28 appearances. He comes into Regionals sporting a 4-1 record with 2.90 ERA.
    ...
Saylor was the anchor at the back end of the staff serving as ECU’s closer for much of the year earning five saves, a 6-3 record and a stellar 12.66 K/9 Inning rate.
    ...
Also making the Second Team at the plate were DH Cam Clonch, third baseman Alec Makarewicz, second baseman Jacob Starling, and outfielder Bryson Worrell. Clonch batted .287 with six home runs in just 41 games played. Makarewicz started all 60 games at third and belted nine home runs. Starling scored 30 runs and had 4 home runs in just 43 games played. Worrell led the Pirates in home runs with 14 while batting .316. Not to be outdone, Jacob Jenkins-Cowart batted .327 and knocked 12 home runs.

    E. Carolina is a scrappy team. Maybe a bit like Oklahoma State...?

The last time Texas traveled for a super regional was 2005, and we all know how that turned out. I'm okay with history repeating itself. Except maybe win games 1 & 2 instead of 2 & 3.

I think a better comparison for the pitching match-up is to look at their best two against our best two in ERA. I haven't looked but I feel that puts us in more than slightly better advantage than what you stated.

I think in a best of three series Texas can match-up with anybody in the nation. It's that 3rd game if necessary is what gets tricky for us.

With all that being said, I like our chances to win games one and two. Flying back Saturday to get ready for the following week.

Haven’t seen anything about EC’s defense. I know the horns have very good gloves. And defense can win games when played well.
This, along with our bats may give the Horns an edge.
Looks like their best pitcher comes out of the bullpen. So we really need to maintain a lead going into innings 7,8,9.

While E. Carolina is a mid-major conference team and a directional school, make no mistake--they are a worthy adversary.
