It just didn’t happen. We left way too many on base, and the pitching stunk up the joint today.

Good run by the team through the playoffs to make it to the CWS. Omaha is Austin North.

If memory serves, this is our second time to go 0-2.

If pierce wants to see year 8 on the 40, at a minimum he needs to find a really good pitching coach. I’ve been against Sean being that guy most of the season.

We just went 2 and Q by a second and first year coach respectively. It takes zero years to have a competitive squad in college baseball. This is pierces 6th year.

I know we'll need to hit the portal hard to re-tool this pitching staff along with weeding out non-contributors. My question is this: do we need a new pitching coach as well? I'm truly curious because I don't know a lot about our current pitching coach. I know there were injuries and such during the year, but outside of Gordon, which pitcher(s) actually improved rather than regressed. I really didn't see any.

This is Pierce's 3rd World Series in his 5th full season. He went 2 & Q this year and also in 2018. This team should end up ranked in the top 10 to finish the year for his 3rd time.

In comparison Augie made it to the series once in his first five years where he promptly went 2 & Q. He had one team ranked in the top 10.

If we want to say "he took over Augie's team and he was loaded", Augie finished his last five years with only two playoff appearances making the CWS once.

I remember those years, Augie was on the hot seat, then bam, 6th year, won it all.

keep in mind, this was before the transfer portal.

I respect your comparison but Pierce’s issue will be with his comparison with those coaches in Norman and Collie Station. Those guys are the real deal and the ags were better today, top to bottom, physically and mentally.. Time will tell but if Texas baseball takes a backseat to those two rivals, who despise Texas, David won’t need a pocket warmer on cold days in Austin. Texas had a great year but guess who was better with one year under his belt.
Proud of the team and luv the guys.

A very disappointing end to the season. The staff can take one day to commiserate - then get busy putting together a good plan for next season.

I agree with some of the comments about our pitching coach. Especially Sabre.
We do need to hire the best pitching coach out there. Texas has always had great pitching. We have won championships with less hitting and defense like we had this year. Sean Allen is a very good coach and I’m glad we have him but he is not a pitching coach. He was assigned the position last year. He has little experience in the role and never was a pitcher. And again, I think he is a good coach but has been put in a specialty coaching position without the background. We need to hire someone good to be able to recruit. If I was a recruit or parent of a recruit and I watched what happened this year I would question coming here. There was little development, little strategy, poor pitch calling, pitchers not used properly or at right times. We had pitchers coming in with leads and in some cases big leads and walking hitters. You tell me college pitchers especially ones that come to Texas can’t throw strikes. With leads u make them earn their way on base. You don’t have to pitch so fine and try to throw breaking pitches that catch the outside corner at the knees unless u are ahead in the count. You pitch ahead in the count. Was there really any improvement in our staff over the course of the year. Not much, if any.
We had a championship lineup and defense this year. One of the best I’ve seen at Texas. You have to have pitching to win championships. I want to keep Sean Allen but we need to add a top of the line pitching coach.

It's one thing to lose to good teams but we didn't even look competitive in either of those.

It took Skip 5 years to get OU to Omaha. If we had promoted him to head coach after Augie, do you think you would have felt like he was the real deal if it took him 5 years to get Texas to Omaha? I suspect most people here would have wanted him fired after Year 4.

Among other reasons, they wanted it more and it was more important to them. Hunger, desire, things we suffered through with Herman. They wanted it more, and were better prepared mentally.

Schlossnagle is in his first year at A & M and you can count on him being very successful there. The guy can coach baseball with the best of them!

    Plus a new pitching coach.

It cannot be a consequence that everyone on the staff collapsed.

Hansen was up and down all year.
Stevens was up then could not get out of the 3rd inning and then was our best starter.
Gordon took over as the most consistent starter after Witt went down, then finished the year unable to get out of the 3rd or 4th inning.
Nixion was one of the very top closer last year but could not get the bat boy out this year.

The rest of the Bull was a train wreck.

Start with a competent pitching coach.

IDT you can point to Sean Allen as the reason we went 2 and bbq. We went to Omaha with the best offensive team in the history of Texas baseball and we put up 5 runs in 2 games. The pitching is irrelevent in that situation.

I don't doubt that, but you mentioned Skip as being the "real deal" in the same sentence as Schlossnaggy. Just trying to understand why you think Skip is the real deal over Pierce, when Skip has less success as a head coach (and I love Skip, by the way, wish he was still our pitching coach).

Kind of the point, good pitching shuts down good hitting and we couldn’t keep the score within reach of the offense, the entire staff struggled the entire season outside of the first 2-3 weeks. Our number one whoever you want to say was in that role got run out of both games.

    Here’s A&M’s pitching coach:

Renowned pitching coach and 2017 D1Baseball Assistant Coach of the Year Nate Yeskie was named associate head coach for Texas A&M in June of 2021.
His work helped Oregon State pitchers at the next level. While in Corvallis, the Beavers churned out 32 pitchers selected in the MLB Draft, including 17 taken in the first nine rounds and six who have reached the Major Leagues.

A Pat Casey product whom I’ve mentioned before as one of the premiere coach’s in the country till I found out he retired.

OU- skip johnson (spent a little time with Augie Garrido) on the other hand has been learning to be a head coach the last 5 years. Who knows if he will be consistent or not, we will see, definitely has a strong team this year and pitching is lights out.

I’m not saying fire pierce or Sean Allen but you don’t learn a position like that at a baseball school like Texas, Texas deserves better at that position coach considering it’s history.

tulowitski did a fine job with the hitters this year, last year they struck out too much and they improved on that this year.

I disagree, keep perspective. Pierce will be compared to other coaches in the best program in NCAA history....Texas...not aggy nor OU even if they win it all this year. We've won it 6 times in 38 apperances. Its not like we win this thing every time we make it.

I maintain the success of Pierce will be if he can learn and improve where its needed. If not we'll stop making the CWS and he will be gone.

Hard to argue your point but you have to ask, why did the head coach put a guy in the pitching role who was not a pitching coach. I know 2 on this board are complete pierce homers and just will not face facts.

I will trust Coach Pierce's perspective on this, if he thinks a change is needed, then fine. Y'all conveniently forget that Sean was assistant coach of the year just last year so he's not dog-meat like some of y'all act.

Texas has been one of the premier baseball programs in the NCAA and Pierce can justifiably be compared to past great coaches to prove his worth. I am not here to bash him. And improvement will be so noted by the observant fans like yourself. But my point is that his two biggest rivals are still playing and if he starts coming in third behind them that is all that will matter to the fans. You can’t go from “bell cow” to runner-up to aggies and boomers and keep your job at Texas. That’s just the way it is. And the coaching at those schools, with the ags’ mastery of the portal (it appears that they canned last years team and built a new one on transfers), is going to make it harder. I am not in favor of running off all of the players and replacing them with transfers on the “free agent” market but instead hope Pierce can improve on his recent success.

Texas fans tend to be way too quick with the hook. I still recall the fans who wanted Augie gone after Texas lost two games to Stanford in 2001 in the regional after winning the first game and having the advantage to get to a super. Augie had one trip to Omaha that was a quick 2 and Q and with two losing seasons at Texas the talk was that he was washed up and needed to go. Everyone remembers the run Texas started the very next year.

Of course its not just baseball that Texas fans are quick with the hook, don't get me started about the folks who wanted Mack gone in 2003 right before Texas went on a 69-8 run over the next six years, won an NC, played for another and finished in the top five four times.

There is a reason Allen was assistant of the year last year. Yes things fell apart (somewhat as team did still make it to Omaha this year for crying out loud) but there was a lot more going on than coaching including some untimely injuries and frankly a couple of kids who just fell apart. Also, If Allen gets the blame for some things he needs to get credit for getting Tristan back into a good place at end of the year and for bringing along some young relievers who showed out in the regional and super regionals.

Look, I am a realist, and if one season becomes a trend then we need to talk about changes but pointing to this year alone as a reason to change is not right no matter how emotional you get. Stability is critical for recruiting and for program culture and right now this program has that stability. Its not time yet for a change at pitching coach. Not yet.

    This. 1000x this.
Some Texas fans are spoiled, and haven't the vision, nor patience, nor (apparently) enough knowledge of the game to critique beyond "fire the coach".
