Appears to be a good defensive catcher—all PAC 12. He bats at a very slightly higher batting avg than Ardoin, but with not nearly as much power. Note: despite his all PAC credentials, it’s not automatic that he wins the starting job. He may, or may not, beat out Schusler for the starting position. Guilliamette being better behind the plate. Schusler having a good bat and more power. Or we could have a true two-catcher lineup next year. Or a 2/3 Guilliamette - 1/3 Schusler playing time split. Or something like that. In the MLB, starting catchers will typically have a lot more days off than Silas was afforded.

A good take. We’ve been spoiled by Ardoin with good catching in recent years.

Pearce can turn one into Darren Loy II and put him in right field.

    Josh Day

    Missouri
    Shortstop
    0.340 batting avg
    7 homeruns
    0.964 fielding % — 6 errors on the year

    Entered the portal yesterday.

A little bit off the usual superior fielding % we see from our middle infield (but not terrible). But ooooohhhhh that 0.340 batting average!!!!! Could be a third baseman? Or second baseman with Daly at SS?

Faltine, Daly, Messinger, Melendez. That’s not a normal infield defensively (or offensively). That’s a highlight reel cast. We may see some more typical performances defensively.

    Now in the portal:

    Julian Bosnic
    LHP
    2.84 ERA
    78 strikeouts
    in 50 2/3 innings
    Both starts and relieves.
    4-2
    4 saves

Has some injury history—adding an element of risk. Draft possibilities compound the risk—was drafted by the Giants in the 16th round in 2021, but chose college ball.

    Trey Cooper
    Pitcher
    NC State
    40.50 ERA

    has entered the portal

he’s averaging over a hit, a walk, and two bean balls per inning.
he might be considered a “project.”
I bet he’d say “yes” if we asked…

Looks like Frank Anderson turned down the same position at Texas. I thought it might be a stretch to get him to come back.

A week in the life of Southern Miss' starting pitching rotation – Sunday starter Hurston Waldrep

"...his standard breakfast of eggs, sausage and pancakes ..."
"Come 12 p.m., it’s lunchtime, and ... Waldrep will choose between Qdoba or Chick-fil-A..."

“I’m very strict with what I eat,” Waldrep said. “It’s a very clean diet. I think I can accredit it to what I have done."

    [gotta like this guy]

    "Waldrep deadlifted 615 pounds."

That would be strong for a baseball player.

Apparently Coffey, porcha and thomas may be able to contribute on the mound, then add Tole. With a good pitching coach maybe we can get the rest of the staff functional too and be able to focus on hitting and defensive assignments to fight for a decent season. Pierce has zero excuses for not reaching at minimum a super regional, by now he should have established a good influx of replacement talent to back fill leaving talent without having to rely so heavily on the portal.

im pretty excited to see the new guys, hope they all make it in but im sure one will turn pro.

Yeah, 2 or 3 of our incoming pitchers will probably make a significant impact in the bullpen, if not as a starter. Coffey’s bat may be as good as his arm…?

Porchas and Grubbs are the two I’m watching to burst on the scene as true Freshman. Grubbs = fiery competitor and smart pitcher. Porchas = arguably the best high school pitcher in California.

I saw a little bit of porchas, great mechanics, looks sharp. Would like to see his velo up more if it’s still sitting at 91 but if you’re good enough, you can get by with that. They talk highly on several of the incoming kids, the kid out of aledo and I’m curious to see how good this Galvan kid is out of sinton that played for alaniz.

If Alaniz knows anything, he knows what it takes for a kid to make it at UT and beyond as a pitcher.

Good thing to note. Given the prior couple of posts, I just assumed the conversation was still regarding pitchers. My bad.

A couple of aggie relievers are looking to jump ship:

    Khristian Curtis
    1.42 ERA
    15 strikeouts
    8 walks
    in 19.0 innings pitched

opponents' batting avg against him: 0.236
    (some good numbers)

    Jack Hamilton
    3.18 ERA
    5 strikeouts
    4 walks
    in 5.2 innings pitched
opponents' batting avg against him: 0.174
(decent enough numbers, but a small body of work)

Alex Rao--WE SHOULD GET THIS GUY!!!
    RHP
    3.83 ERA
    3-1
    3 saves
    57 Strikeouts
    28 Walks
    opponents batted 0.188 against him

    in 47.0 innings pitched

    :nd:
Now here's a high profile middle reliever. I saw some games Rao was in during the playoffs, and he was very impressive. He works his split fingered pitches very effectively. A crafty and tricky guy, who can also throw hard. Rao was the trusted workhorse for Notre Dame's middle relief, and can also start. He was a big part of what got the Irish to the CWS for the first time in (my) memory. (We sure could have used a trusted workhorse, or two or three, for middle relief...! Harrison is about the only one that might qualify for that description this past year).

Rao was one of Notre Dame’s most heavily used pitchers in 2022. He appeared in 25 games, ranking second to only fellow senior Aidan Tyrell. Tyrell started five times. Rao never started. He was always one of former Notre Dame head coach Link Jarrett‘s first options out of the bullpen. He has one year of eligibility remaining.

Rao went 3-1 with a 3.83 ERA. Opposing batters were hitting just .188 off him. That mark is lower than ace John Michael Bertrand’s opposing batting average of .234 and No. 2 starter Austin Temple’s figure of .200. The .188 number tied for the lowest on the team of anyone who pitched at least 10 innings with junior Liam Simon.

(a little used pitcher, with decent numbers; looks like he wants playing time)

    RHP
    6'2"
    193 lbs
    Reliever
1.54 ERA as a Freshman, Fall of 2020, when opponents batted 0.182 against him, then had a significant drop off in the Spring of 2021 and as a Soph (ala Nixon...)
    Fastball in the low 90s.

Overall, his numbers are so-so. He may or may not be a take. Still, at least worth a look as we're looking to boost our bullpen--a lot.

from Brewster, NY (could be a rich kid)
Finance major (lots of hedge funds out of Dallas these days; and UT has an excellent business school with a very good Wall Street pipeline, just sayin'...)
